Frerichs Serves On Apollo 8 Recovery Vessel

Radioman Second Class Darrell P. Frerichs USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Frerichs of Clarksville, serves aboard USS Cochrane as the Apollo 8 secondary recovery ship. The Pearl Harbor based destroyer operations included a second destroyer, an oiler, a relay ship and USS Yorktown as primary recovery. Cochrane crews trained extensively for night recovery during the mission prep in the mid Pacific.

Rites Held for Nicholas Mahr 79 in Wisconsin

Nicholas Mahr 79 of Greene died December 21 at Veterans Administration Hospital Des Moines. Services were held December 26 at St. Marys Church Platteville Wis with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Survived by sister Laura G Mahr of Dubuque.

Hogue Accepted Into Army Band

Allan Hogue son of Mr and Mrs Thaine Hogue of Greene has been accepted into the Army Band. He will report for induction January 20 and after basic training join the 371 Army Band at Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Allan graduated Greene High School in 1968 and plays a clarinet.

Employment Office To Open Here Jan. 14

The Iowa State Employment Service will open an office here on January 14, 1969, located in the Farmer's Coop Elevator. Joe Keeney, manager of the Charles City office, will visit on Tuesdays for half days to conduct interviews and testing. Hours and additional information will be announced later and may be obtained by calling Genevieve Timens at 834-5571.

W. E. Frudden 77 a longtime Charles City resident died Wednesday December 25 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital after six weeks illness from cancer. He was a WWI veteran and served in local boards including the school and YMCA. Survived by wife Maree son Dan and three grandchildren. Funeral was Saturday at Congregational Church with burial at Riverside Cemetery.

Greene Ramblerettes trounce Lynnville Sully 82 to 41 in tourney

Greene Ramblerettes, led by Mary Rottler with 35 points on 14 of 27 FG and 7 of 13 FT, defeated Lynnville Sully 82 41 at State Center holiday tournament. Janea Fischer added 15 for Greene as they built a 21 12 first quarter lead and a 58 28 edge after three.

R Christiansen Died at Hampton

Russell E Christiansen 51 died at his Hampton home from a heart attack on December 24 Tuesday. Survivors include his wife Ferne one son William E Christiansen of Greene and two grandchildren Todd and Timothy. Funeral services December 27 at 10 00 am at Green and Sietsema Funeral Home Hampton with Rev Wayne Gjerde officiating. Burial in Hampton Cemetery.

Improvements At County Jail In Butler County Iowa

Butler County Jail at Allison was inspected on August 7 1968 under Code of Iowa chapter 356. Although the brick building was in basic condition supervision lacked and windows were broken with cleaning equipment inside cells. A 1938 meeting discussed repairs moving the sheriff’s office and adding a night jailer. A December 11 1968 follow up moved the sheriff’s office into the building for day supervision a night jailer was hired and repairs completed. The jail is now on the approved list.

Garth Butler Plans Retirement

Garth A. Butler of Greene, after 37 years with Pooley Lumber, retires today January 1. He previously worked at the Ford Garage from 1925 to 1928 and farmed for three years before joining Pooley in 1931. He will stay on part time but relinquish the manager role. He and Hazel Wright have three children, Doris, Paul, and John, and have been married 43 years.
