The editor reflects on yearly Christmas ecards from friends and service buddies as a means to preserve ties and memories. He urges readers to focus on the true meaning of Christmas for a spiritual lift and wishes everyone a joyous season and a prosperous 1969 for them and their families.
The annual 4 H club officer training will be held Monday afternoon December 30 in St. John Lutheran Parish Center Charles City. Officers from 35 Floyd County clubs are invited. Registration starts at 1 15 p m Judy Kingery and Tom Ritter Greene will preside. Sessions cover officer duties with local speakers and club presidents meet with treasurers reporters and secretaries. Treats will follow the closing presentation by the full group.
The Greene High School choir directed by Harold Blosser will sing on Christmas day at 3 30 p m over radio station KRIB 1490. The First State Bank of Greene sponsors the program.
A week long Citizenship Short Course for young adults 18 to 25 will run Feb 16 to 22 1969 in Washington DC with National 4-H Center as headquarters The $70 cost covers registration meals lodging and transportation Delegates arrange their own travel Reservations through the Iowa State University 4-H office in Ames before January 1 1969 on a first come basis
Greene wrestlers fell 23 to 19 to Tripoli on Saturday evening. Larry Albert and Doug Trees won by pins in 3 30 and 1 55. Individual results include Neuendorf over Knight 5 2 and Blasberg over Trees 4 3. Reserve squad lost to Plainfield 22 14 with De Vries Majewski Neumeyer winning, Leavens forfeit.
Mrs. Fred Kollmann 82 formerly of Waverly died December 22 at Parkview Gardens Waterloo. Services were December 24 at St Pauls Lutheran Church Waverly. Burial Harlington Cemetery. Survived by two daughters Coleen and Dorothy two sons Marvin and Glenn two sisters Lena Augusta and one brother Herman Fick.
Air Force Academy cadet Steven Barnett spends his leave in Colorado Springs and visits his Ames relatives Mr. and Mrs. Dean Barnett and their son Brett at the home of their mother Mrs. Iva Barnett this week.
The Greene Post Office will be closed all day on Christmas December 25. No counter or rural delivery service. Mail will be received distributed and dispatched as on all other holidays. Patron cooperation noted. Bob Curtis.
The Iowa State Highway Commission announced resolutions for new speed zones on Iowa Highway 14. The changes affect traffic into Greene from the south and within the city. South of Greene the limit is 55 mph and within 1000 feet of the grade school intersection. From 100 feet north of the intersection to Greene’s north corporate limits the limit is 70 mph by day and 60 mph at night. The commission ordered the Traffic and Safety Department to place the required warning signs.
Adverse weather delayed holiday programs at Calvary Baptist Presbyterian First and St Peter's Lutheran churches. Calvary will present Sunday night December 29 at 7 30. First Presbyterian held event Monday and Carol Communion is set for Tuesday December 24 at 7 30. Lutheran church program is Christmas Eve at 7 30. Methodist held its program Monday with a candlelight service on Christmas Eve at 8 00.
Floyd County merchants will attend a January February workshop on business management basics in Charles City. Sessions on legal structures trade area records motivation and agricultural changes run Tuesdays January 28 February 4 11 18 and 25 at Charles City Junior High School with ISU and the Chamber of Commerce sponsoring. Enrollment details include a $5 fee and mailing addresses.

Mr W R Wilson of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service announced an address reporting period in January. Almost all aliens in the United States must report their addresses during that month using forms available at post offices and INS offices. Willful noncompliance may lead to serious consequences.
A Social Security Administration District Office representative will visit Allison at the Sheriff's Building on January 8 22 and 29 1969 from 9 00 a.m. to 11 00 a.m. Vernon S Meyer District Manager reports. Call Waterloo district office at 525 W 5th Street 234 1554 for services. Waterloo office hours are Mondays 8 30 a.m. to 6 30 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday 8 30 a.m. to 4 30 p.m.
The Iowa Heart Association offers snow shoveling tips to protect husbands from overexertion. Advice covers medical caution for heart disease, easing effort for those over 40, taking breaks, dressing warmly, and suggests hiring a neighbor boy to clear the snow as a prudent investment.
Three men from Butler County were inducted or enlisted in the U S Army and Air Force during the December call. Roger D. Henning of Clarksville was inducted while Ronald K. Bertram of Waverly and Robert L. Boomgarden of Allison enlisted for two years. Six men are expected in the January call and twelve will go for pre induction physicals to Fort Des Moines on January 6. William B. Waters of Tallahassee formerly of Dumont will serve four years in the U S Army, Allen R. Whiteside of Clarksville four years in the U S Air Force, and Winifred K. Juncker of Aredale three years in the U S Army. The local draft board office closed December 24 and Christmas. it will reopen December 26 from 8:00 to 4:30 p m.
Greene dominates with 18 points as the Frosh-Soph Ramblers bounce back from a rocky start to beat Riceville 32 to 26. Greene leads 10-7 early, Shultz brothers and Eimers control boards, next game versus St Ansgar with a 4-0 record.
Robert Curtis, local Postmaster, presented Oscar Bartels with a 30 year expert driving award on Monday December 23, 1968. The award, by the National Safety Council through the Post Office Department, recognizes 30 years of rural route driving without an accident, totaling about 655,000 miles.
Floyd County extension council members completing terms were honored at a December 13 dinner meeting. Service plaques went to Harold Kuh Bob Havranck and Adrian Dolan for 2 years. Harold Tack and Elvin Toppin received plaques for 4 years. Newly elected members David Bean Albert Nauman Walt Huxsel Arnold Staudt and Richard Pruessner were introduced. The event featured a pot luck supper with smoked turkey and pumpkin pie, Christmas music, and a Germany Switzerland photo presentation by Mr and Mrs Fred Kehret. The organizational meeting to elect officers for the new year is set for January 7.
Greene Ramblers rallied from 5 down at halftime to stun St Ansgar 50 49 on locally held court. Rich Siemens led Greene with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Greg Hackenmiller added 15 in the first half. St Ansgar’s Feldt Hackenmiller and Brunsma each contributed key plays as the Saints held a 31 26 halftime edge before Greene surged in the second half.
Lester O Brown age 52 of Greene died from injuries after a two car collision north of seven mile corner Friday night. Duane E Ott age 19 in critical condition at Floyd County Memorial Hospital along with Nancy E Green. Brown born September 1 1916 in Mason City survived by wife Cyrella two children and several relatives. Funeral services set for December 26 at Reid's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lavern Hanson. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery in Mason City.
Mr Jean Montgomery is at Floyd County Memorial Hospital with improving condition. He is allowed visitors, signaling a positive turn in his recovery at the facility.
The Greene wrestling team lost 29 to 17 at Mason City Newman last Tuesday as flu kept many locals out. Doug Trees earned a 1:09 pin over Murphy and Dick Stuntz, Bob Ascher, Dennis Katcher, and Jim Meek won their bouts. Next meet: January 3 hosting Nora Springs mat men.
Mr and Mrs Jerry Steere welcomed a daughter on December 9. She is named Jan Frances and weighed 8 pounds 4 ounces. Three sisters Tracy Tammy and Jodie greet her at home. Grandparents are Mrs Wm Johnson and Mr and Mrs Leo Steere. Great grandparents include Mrs Harold Stuntz Mr and Mrs E S Johnson Mr and Mrs Will Steere Sr and Mrs Anna Reed.
The Girl Scouts announce a burning of the greens ceremony at Klassi's acres on Greene's north edge on Sunday January 5 at 5:00 p.m. The Boy Scouts will collect Christmas trees for the event on Saturday January 4.
