The Greene High School wrestling team will travel to Jackson Junction on Friday evening January 3 for a meet with Turkey Valley. The reserve meet is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
Waterloo district Social Security Manager Earl T. Johnson urges workers to verify wage credits by ensuring employers use correct name and Social Security number and to check records every three years. The office offers free postcard forms to request a copy, with only a stamp needed for mailing.
Butler County field assessors under Herman H. Brocka start duty with William Schneiderman Bennedette and Verlin Kruse among listed teams. Assessors will visit Greene Allison Clarksville Bristow Ardale Dumont Shell Rock Aplington and other towns to collect homestead and soldiers exemptions and dog license applications. Property owners are urged to have listings ready to speed completion.

Larry D. Williamson hospital corpsman third class USN, son of Mrs. Leora M. Williamson of Greene, serves aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. Independence visited Genoa November 9 to 18 and Naples November 28, with crew tours of Florence Pisa Venice and excursions to Germany.
Mr and Mrs Charles Barney of Perry Missouri visited Christmas dinner at the Leslie Barnhart home. Also guests were Mr and Mrs Dean Walston and family of Manchester and Mr and Mrs Virgil Runge and sons of Nora Springs. Merlin Parks and Brian called in the evening. Barney family returned to Missouri on Saturday after a week in the Barnhart home.
Extension specialists say most Iowa farmers should sign up for the 1964 Feed Grain Program though base and yields affect eligibility. Signup runs February 10 through March 27 with payments rising for higher percent set asides. The program uses 4 year averages for yields and features a $1.25 national price with a $0.15 payment.
Peter Joseph Hermann 74 of Greene died December 25 after a lingering illness. Born June 30 1889 in Ulster Township Floyd County he married Catherine Sinnweil in Roseville in 1913. Survived by wife, three daughters, two sons, twenty grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and siblings. Funeral at St Marys Catholic Greene December 28 with Rev Joseph B Murphy officiating. Burial in St Marys Cemetery Roseville. Reid's Funeral Chapel arranged.
Sandy Maxson of Denver spent Christmas Eve to Friday at her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Maxson. Guests at Christmas dinner included Mr. and Mrs. Ben Mark and Marsha of Waterloo and Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Maxson.
New residents Mr and Mrs Robert Ramsdell of Cedar Rapids welcomed a son Bret Alan born Friday morning December 27 weighing 3 pounds 57 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Clayton Ramsdell of Cedar Rapids and Mr and Mrs Kenneth Stewart of Greene. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Brinkman welcomed a daughter Cindy Kay born December 24 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 9 pounds 1 ounce. Mrs Brinkman and baby returned home Friday. Mr and Mrs Lee Jepsen of Dumont welcomed a son Ronald Lee born December 26 at Mercy Hospital Mason City weighing 4 pounds 13 ounces.
Dorothy Fischer won the Bowl Your Average Tournament bowl off at Greene Lanes after eight weeks. Ninety bowlers started, four advanced to the final. Fischer tops Marian Starkweather 201 to 133 with Patty Walker third at 123 and Kenneth Rodman fourth at 125.
Gloria Arends Jolayne White Bill Thompson and Tom Teeple will perform at Luther College Decorah Iowa for the 13th annual Dorian Vocal Festival on January 8 and 9 Warner Imig national president of the American Choral Directors Association serves as guest conductor for the event.
Washington The Association of Third Class Mail Users reports that ZIP codes may become mandatory for bulk third class mail at any time. The regulation applies to postcards for some utility companies and follows a shift from five to four cent rates under ZIP code use, with cards separated by ZIP code areas.
Republican Attorney General Evan Hultman announces candidacy for Governor of Iowa in 1964. A Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve and former battalion commander, he now serves as Judge Advocate General of the 103rd Infantry Division and was past president of the Black Hawk County Reserve Officers Association. He previously served two terms as Black Hawk County Attorney.
The Butler County Extension Service reports its 1963 activities and outlines a five year primary road program through 1968 with expected costs. Key projects include a Greene by pass on highway 14, relocation of highway 3 near Clarksville and Waverly, plus surfacing and widening on routes 3, 47, and 188. Funding and timing may shift with contracts and future needs.
