Mrs. Helen Schwartz, a 20 year Buchholz and Dralles employee, retires on Christmas Eve after starting in the grocery department in 1943 She will visit Chicago with son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs A L Wulff and Alice Mrs Harold Schoenfeld is hired to replace her in the grocery department
J P Moffett's Court records show Mark Allen Backer charged with a stop sign violation. He paid a $5.00 fine and $4.00 costs.
Mr and Mrs Nichara ontone berg and family have departed for Florida to spend a few weeks. No services will be held at the Wesleyan Methodist Church near Bristow on Sundays December 29 and January 5. A midweek service is scheduled at Raymond Barnett residence on Thursday January 2.
Greene and Nashua fire crews battled a Sunday afternoon blaze at Raymond Hauser’s workshop near Powersville. They could not save the building or its contents but prevented spread to a nearby barn. The loss was covered by insurance.
Mrs. Emery Muilenoburg 27 of Hartley died suddenly December 12 at her home. A former Greene resident she leaves husband and three daughters ages 1 2 and 3, one sister Mrs John Hoeft Cedar Rapids, and mother Mrs Carrie LaBarge Hartley. Funeral services were held in Hartley December 14.
The junior high and freshmen basketball teams defeated Rudd last Wednesday with scores of 30 to 14 and 32 to 18. The seventh and eighth graders jumped to a 10 to 1 first quarter lead and held it through the game. Larry Eimers and Greg Dralle led scoring with 10 points each, while John Barth led the freshmen with 13.
Local farmers in the 1964 feed grain program may plant designated non surplus crops on diverted acreage. Eligible crops include guar sesame safflower sunflower castor beans and mustard seed. Safflower yields no diversion payment. other crops receive partial payments at 50 or 30 percent of the minimum rate. About 18 000 acres were diverted in 1962. 1963 figures pending. Arthur F. Pagles 81 died suddenly Friday morning December 20 at his Greene home from a heart attack. Born October 3 1882 in Stillman Valley Illinois he married Ethel Isdell April 10 1912. Survivors include wife two daughters a daughter in law five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral from Reid's Funeral Chapel Monday at 1 30 officiated by Rev G F Hutter with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Cadet Paul N Burroughs arrived home Thursday for a 19 day furlough. He is in his second year at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. He is the son of Mr and Mrs C E Burroughs.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Association in Des Moines released the pairings for the 1964 state girls sectional basketball tournament. Team matchups include Greene facing the Riceville Allison winner in the February 18 quarterfinal at Allison, with rounds scheduled Feb 15 Feb 18 Feb 21 and Feb 22 across Rockford Allison New Hartford Nashua Parkersburg Aplington Nora Springs Clarksville and Greene.
Butler County driver license examiner Mel Allen announced that from January 2 renewals must include a social security number on licenses. Those with SSN cards must present them. those without should obtain one before applying. If a card cannot be obtained, a license number will be assigned. SSN cards can be obtained at the local Post Office. The examiner will be at the Allison courthouse Mondays 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. inquiries to Mr. Allen at the courthouse.
H Opperman announces resignation as Butler County Treasurer effective February 1 1964 after three years in office. He will join Moorenk Book Company as a salesman and representative starting February 1.

Pvt Marvin Chace, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Grace, arrived home Saturday from Fort Gordon Georgia where he is under heavy weapons training He will return to Fort Gordon on SOL.
Iowa State University president James Hilton told Des Moines audiences that farming efficiency rises but Iowa industry lags. He pointed to a 42 percent income gain from 1952 to 1962, versus a 63 percent national rise, arguing young people leave rural areas for urban wages and urging expansion of nonfarm industries to retain Towans.
The St Ansgar Saints remained unbeaten by overpowering the Ramblers 71 to 42 last Friday night. The Saints led 19 to 4 after one quarter and 60 to 26 by three quarters as reserves edged Rambler reserves 45 to 41. Steve Mucier led scoring with a 22 point total.
Dixon Marsh of Greene won the 1964 Floyd County Master Corn Growers contest with a yield of 158.43 bushels per acre while Alvin Morse of Charles City won the Master Soybean division with 42.77 bushels per acre Gerald Bamker of Floyd placed second in corn with 146.08 bushels per acre In soybeans Robert Nordmeyer was second with 35.09 and Kenneth Feldman third with 35.02 bushels per acre A presentation dinner will follow for the contestants and awards will be given
Sales of United States savings bonds in Butler county totaled 36,200 for November, led by John McWhirter of Allison, county volunteer bonds chairman. Eleven month Butler sales of Series E and H bonds reached 765,325, at 84 percent of the 1963 goal. Iowa statewide November sales were 7,474,953, with eleven months totaling 104,298,881 at 89 percent of the state quota.
The last winners in a prize giveaway at Buchholz and Dralle Department Store include Genevieve DuJonchay, samonite stepsteel, Mrs. George Shultz, Rath canned ham, and Mrs. Paul Dralle with a Fieldcrest blanket.
The NIAD Recreation and Tourism Committee elected A L Henningsen as chair and Gordon Sawtelle as vice chair with Mrs. Fred Keeps as secretary at the Mason City Junior College meeting. Martin Miller outlined the four state Heritage Trail across Iowa Minnesota Wisconsin and Illinois with ribbon cuttings set for Minneapolis January 9 and Chicago in late spring. He urged communities to develop attractions for travelers and noted support from the Iowa State University Extension Service and a request for an attractions inventory. The panel will assist in compiling local highlights and welcomes reports of significant pioneer or Indian items to Box 778 Mason City or to NIAD members.

The Great Plains region reports excellent ice fishing per the Iowa Conservation Commission. Perch are hitting well on West Okeboji with wall eye fishing from Smru Lake. Ice is safer to cross, opening opportunities for other areas as the season begins.
In Cedar Falls Rev. John A. Ludeman has been a patient at Sartori Hospital since Tuesday December 17 for a heart condition. He is a former pastor of the First Presbyterian Church Greene.
