The Butler County Sheriff’s office in Allison investigates a found 22 caliber rifle north of Aredale along a gravel road. Citizens with information are urged to contact the sheriff’s office immediately.
Charles E Grassley of New Hartford Butler County representative has left a complete edition of the 1962 Code of Iowa at Greene Public Library for public use. He receives two sets with each revision and aims to place one with a county library to maximize access. Mrs Royal Hardman the local librarian says the book is available now.
The Greene Girl Scouts held the fifth annual Burning of the Greens at Klassi Acres Sunday at 5:00 PM with the Greene Fire Department present for safety. Queens Colleen Kehoe and Linda Wunsch and princesses Nancy Miller and Jan Majewski were crowned by Mayor Ramker. Brownie Troop 311 sang Away in a Manger, Junior 278 Silent Night, Cadette 265 First Noel. Jolene Litterer read The Christmas Tree. Mrs. Jim Drakle led carol singing.
Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Dreier returned home Saturday from Richmond California where they spent Christmas and New Year with their son in law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Don McClelland and family Also visiting were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Rose and family of Dumas Texas
Louis Henke born December 9 1883 in Coldwater Iowa and died December 31 1963 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after a fall. He practiced law at Wray Colorado 1909 to 1945 married Roxy Harriett Nolte March 1 1914 and had a son and two daughters. Surviving are wife son and three daughters nine grandchildren and one brother. Funeral held at Heid’s Chapel with Rev G F Butler officiating burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
A series of three evening meetings on dairying begins Wednesday January 8 at 7 30 p m at the Extension Office in Allison. Led by Kay Connelly Butler County Extension Service the first session covers dairy nutrition feeds milking herd dry cows calves and heifers with a short workshop to finish. The second and third sessions are January 15 and 22.
The directors of the Veteran's Club will hold a special meeting this evening at 8:00 at the club house. All members interested may attend.
O W Zack Butler County Engineer outlines the 1964 road program with a 361500 expenditure. It covers 112 miles of rolled stone base with bituminous surface including 6 miles in Fremont and 5.2 miles in Bennedette. Four new bridges are planned including a 273 foot over the West Fork Cedar River in Bea ver Township and a 75 foot bridge north of Shell Rock. The plan adds 14 miles of grading and drainage and 28 miles of surfacing with several bridges to be reconstructed.

Mr and Mrs Glenn M Ressler announce a daughter Sara Jane born Saturday January 1 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 5 pounds 4 ounces. Elvin Kingery of Oak Ridge Tennessee and wife welcome son Wayne Vernon born New Years Day weighing 7 pounds first Oak Ridge child of 1964, grandparents Vern Kingery Marble Rock and Gladys Baldwin Fayette.
The Butler County Board of Supervisors began the new year at the Allison courthouse naming Donald N. Ramige chairman for 1964. Harold E. Voss was sworn in as supervisor for a three year term and Robert Klunder became County Recorder after Roger DeBower resigned to join the Rural Electric Cooperative. Shirley Lindaman was appointed county treasurer to fill the unexpired term of H Herschel Opperman. Calvin Kelly of Greene joined the Conservation Board for five years, succeeding Kline Shipman. Freda Maass was reappointed to the Social Welfare Board with Al Tackman and Don Ramige also serving. Larry Sogard remains Social Welfare Director. Otmar W. Zack was rehired as County Engineer at 10500 and David R. Everds named assistant engineer at 7500. A 3 percent raise was approved for secondary roads personnel.
Gertie Feldman 85 of Parkersburg died at home on Monday December 30. Funeral services were held January 3 at Calvary Baptist Church Parkersburg. Survived by two sons Fred Feldman Nashua Grant Feldman Allison two daughters Mrs A H Hartman Aplington Mrs Rener Oltmann Allison twelve grandchildren Wayne Donald Feldman Greene Kenneth Feldman Clarksville Betty Oltmann Cedar Falls and twenty two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband William Feldman in 1947.
Claire W. Curtis of Greene is named county chairwoman of the Iowa Municipal Finance Officers Association. She will coordinate with Finance Officers and Highway Commission staff to promote proper Road Use Tax reporting form use and ensure officers statewide are fully familiar with the new form.
Charles Davis, 24, son of Mr and Mrs Darrell Davis Greene, joins Mark Young Oil Company in Charles City as a partner with Mr Youns. He graduated from Drake University Des Moines in 1981. He is married to the former 1 BFletener wig and they have one fighter. They reside at 6 Sth Street in Charles City.
Lad Leehin menrietta a Greene owned cow Elis and Smith has been recognized by the Holstein-Friesian Association of America for producing over 150000 pounds of milk. The animal has 152000 pounds of butterfat and has averaged about 37 pounds of milk daily since turning two, including dry days.
The Butler County Superintendent's Office reminds students and parents of Military Night at Allison-Bristow High School at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday January 15. Open to all ages, the event explains boys' military obligations and opportunities in service. Guided by Guy A. Olson, County Dance Coordinator, the program features CPO Walt Kinren, Navy. Sgt. Lick Smith, Army. Sgt. Robert Kelley, Marines. and Sgt. Hilger, Air Force.
Mayor William Ramker reports several complaints about individuals shooting firearms within Greene city limits. The town prohibits shooting guns by ordinance and residents are referred to a notice elsewhere in this issue detailing penalties for illegal firearm use inside the city.
Butler and Chickasaw counties appoint new Cedar Valley Mental Health Center board members for 1963. Cecil Starkweather joins from Butler, with Dr Everson, Dr Wilbur Thomas, the Rev Willis Vander Kooi, Jake Reiners, Mrs Fred Waalkes, Dave Brinkman, and Larry Sogard named to the panel joining Bremer County members to oversee the center offering low cost psychiatric services and referrals through physicians clergy or direct visits to the Waverly office.
Swine producers and feed industry personnel may sign up for a three day course in Allison. Key speakers are M. D. Whitaker and E. J. Stevermer from Iowa State University. The program runs 9 30 a m to 3 15 p m Friday January 24 with sessions the next two Fridays. Registration is five dollars and due at the first day’s meeting.
Greene City held a December 30 special session to swear in Mayor William Ramker and councilmen John Hamilton Melvin Yerkes D T Drees and Leonard Nichol. Appointments included Claire Curtis town clerk and several department heads. Ramblers beat Parkersburg 62 46 while Ramblerettes lost 94 47 as Parkersburg shot 93 from the field in the first half.
The Greene mat team fell 43 to 4 against Turkey Valley on Friday night. Results show Fisher at 95 pounds, 103 and 117, Lynch at 132, Kenan at 120, Speltz at 127, Lechtenberg at 133 and 138, Wihim and Wihim draws, Amoroso at 165, and Skaetta at heavyweight all losing by fall or decision. The reserve squad also lost 46-0, as Greene prepares to host Nashua Friday with reserves starting at 7:00.
Tawa teens took the oath of office as members of the State Board of Public Instruction on January 2, 1964. Virgil E. Sheppard of Allison and John D. Warin of Malay join Lester Menke of Calumet and others as present board members. The eight elected members come from local boards within the 1953 eight district boundaries plus one governor appointee. First official meeting held January 2, 1954. Current board includes Antes, Busse, Hirschter, Judd, Menke, Mrs Shannahean, Mrs Shepard, Warin, and Mrs Wearin.
Don Richard Lodge and Jerry Allen Davis, both of Clarksville, were arrested December 31 by Deputy Marvin Barth and charged with making beer available to minors. Lodge posted bond for the next term. Davis pleaded guilty, paid a fine, and faced an additional count for acquiring beer while a minor. An informant statement was signed by Waverly police officers Robert Greenlee and Earl Hill.
The Clerk of the District Court records show 1963 receipts totaling 83 19136 dollars to the state from inheritances, with major payments 19 350.28 and 5 90. Marriage licenses fell by fourteen versus 1962 with 102 issued, August leading with 17 and other months totaling. Eleven divorces occurred, three births in county, 177 death certificates tied, 102 deaths in county and 75 outside. Probate counted 130 matters including 88 estates and 13 guardianships. Civil filings reached 172, crime 29, cuinie 9. Total office receipts 124 000.15 with allocations to fines and trusts.
