It notes 1963 will bring trials but exciting events and calls for neighborly improvement in Greene. A Greene Fire Department crew responded to Harold Holz school residence for an accidental wall fire during pipe thawing.
Ed Marten came home Sunday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after undergoing surgery two weeks earlier.
Elizabeth Schmidtke 81 died of a heart attack Sunday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. She lived with her daughter Mrs Ray Dugan Floyd. Born December 17 1881 in Chickasaw County to Henry and Mary Schafer she married Ed Schmidtke February 27 1912 in Charles City. Surviving daughter five grandchildren two brothers and three sisters. Funeral 1:30 pm Wednesday at St John Lutheran Charles City Rev Werner A Bischoff officiating burial Riverside Cemetery Charles City.
The third district convention of World War I Barracks will be held at the Veteran's Memorial Building in Waterloo on Sunday January 6. Registration begins at 12 30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 1 30 p.m.
Community volunteers and adult men are invited to participate in volleyball games starting Thursday evening January 3 at 7 00 at the high school gym. The notice calls all interested local players to join in the weekly activity and recreation.

Charles City resident Ronald Schwenneker cited for expired license with 5.00 fine and 4.00 costs and speeding with 16.00 fine and 4.00 costs. Greene resident Bob Barth charged with speeding 5.00 fine and 4.00 costs. Greene resident William Franklin Adams charged with speeding 10.00 fine and 4.00 costs.
Funeral services for Mrs. Henry Bochmann 77 were held at Wilmar Lutheran Church with Rev E T Busch officiating. She died Tuesday December 25 at Mercy Hospital Waverly after years of ill health. Born September 25 1885 she married Henry Bochmann June 28 1914. The couple farmed in Wilmar then moved to Allison in 1951. Survivors include her husband a stepson Henry Bachmann Jr a sister Mrs Henry Wiebke a half sister Mrs Ralph Jack and three grandsons. Burial was at Viimar Cemetery.
Iowa's state parks remain open year round and attract families for hot dogs picnics and snowflake camping. Many parks offer open shelters for fires and outdoor fun. Activities include ice sailing ice skating skiing and sledding.
Neal O'Brien named manager of the grocery department at Buchholz and Dralle Department Store effective January 1. He has over ten years in the meat department and served with the Army during the Korean Conflict. He and wife Marjorie Mather of Greene are parents of Mark and Jolene.
Timothy Merfeld seven month old son of Mr and Mrs Maurice Merfeld of Nashua formerly of Greene underwent surgery at Cedar Valley Hospital Friday for a strangulated hernia.
Three individuals face intoxication charges in rural Iowa counties. Frank Oscar Cook, 54, of New Hartford, arrested near New Hartford for second offense operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, bond set at 750 dollars. released after bond. Lawrence Johnson, 34, of Dumont, arrested north of Dumont for first offense OUI, bond 500 dollars. released after bond. Barney Morgan, 48, of Bristow, arrested north of Dumont for intoxication on a public highway, pleaded guilty, fined 25 dollars plus costs. released after payment.
Story Hour at the Greene Public Library will resume Saturday from TAS until 2 p.m. and continue until further notice. Children four years of age and older are welcome to attend. Please use the side door.
Mrs. Harry Crawford and her daughters Debra and Mickey of Vandalia Missouri spent Wednesday through Saturday at the home of her brother-in-law and sister Mr. and Mrs Donald Allan in a family visit.

The Post Office announces new envelope size rules effective January 1. Envelopes under 3 inches wide or 4 1 2 inches long are unavailable. Envelopes over 9 inches wide or 12 inches long are not recommended. Non rectangular shapes are unavailable and ratios below 1 to 1.414 are not recommended. Postage rates also rise January 1.
Cub Scouts meet Allison Scouts in two basketball games this Saturday at the high school gym. The 8 and 9 year olds play first, followed by the 10 and 11 year olds in the second game starting at 9 a.m. in town.
The Girl Scouts will host the Burning of the Greens Ceremony on Sunday January 6 at 5 09 pm at Klassi Acres. Brownies and Girl Scouts will sing and Brownie princesses and Girl Scout queens will be crowned in a Twelfth Night ceremony. The public is invited to attend.
A Beef and Swine Nutrition School will be held in Butler County this month. Jointly sponsored by the Butler County Extension Service and Iowa State University, the three day event runs January 16, 31, 1963 at the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison. A county program titled My Occupational Opportunities will be shown to all eighth graders in January February and March. It covers occupations and work locations, demands for 1970, self evaluation, and rewards and requirements of jobs. Bill Glaser underwent surgery for the amputation of his right leg at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Friday. Mrs. Donald Hagarty also underwent surgery at the same hospital in Charles City.

In Charles City Cedar Valley Hospital on Friday Mrs Mae Squires began treatment. Mrs S W Downs admitted on Saturday for care at Cedar Valley Hospital. Miss Josephine Nelson discharged from St Josephs Mercy Hospital Mason City after major surgery and is at her brother William Nelsons home in Charles City.
Pail Fine Raymond Sheffner, age 17, was arrested by Charles City police on two charges driving recklessly and speeding in Adlison. He pleaded guilty in Frank Knight's court, paid a total of 360.00 in fines and costs, and was released from the county jail.
Stella Jones 75 died this Wednesday at 11 30 am at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charlies City. Rites are pending at Reid's Funeral Chapel.

A Social Security Administration district representative will visit Allison at the Court House on January 10 and 31 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. The visit is announced by Earl T. Johnson, district manager.
Greene and rural Rock residents were injured in a two car collision at 3 20 Sunday afternoon near Ennen Ville. Miss Ennen and Richard Ennen suffered injuries. Ennen was treated and released. Daniel Wilhm, 17, received a summons for failure to yield and will appear in Justice Court in Charles City.
Ice fishermen report strong action on the Mississippi back waters and below dams with walleyes and perch. Artificial lakes and panfish reservoirs yield bluegills, perch, and walleyes while some farm ponds produce panfish. Fishermen use weighted ice flies, larval corn horers, mousses and live baits. early ice can be dangerous, officials urge extreme caution on river and lake ice.
Conservation officials say snow increases rabbit hunting pressure as coyotes and foxes draw attention. Open season runs until February 3 with shooting hours from 6 am to 11 am. Cottontail and jack rabbits face heaviest hunting in Elm counties, with bag limits and passes as described in local rules.
