Rep Charles Grassley schedules a Tell Your Legislator meeting at the Greene Community Center on Saturday morning February 24 from 11 a.m. to gather constituent views on state government matters. The event is part of a district series, inviting public discussion and private meetings if preferred.
A Lay Witness Mission a weekend experience for a local parish runs Feb 22 25 in the United Methodist Church Yoked Parish and the Church of the Brethren. Forty invited witnesses including 18 youth will participate as ordinary Christians sharing faith in daily life. Coordinators Aaron Howell of Earlham Iowa and church leaders plan prayers dinners and group meetings with youth activities led by Jerry and Kay White Maxwell Indiana.
A Greene initiative asks readers to report accidents at the Hiway 14 intersection near the Grade School to the Greene Recorder. The effort targets near misses as well, with confidential reporting and no publication of names as the collecting agency notes.
Butler County hosts Fabric Fair at Greene Community Center February 27 with six booths led by Extension home economists. Demonstrations cover fabric care, pattern selection, silhouettes, contemporary knits, and men’s wear. Hours 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Coffee served. attendees may view, browse, and ask questions during noon hour.
Funeral services were held Saturday for Jason Jay Fiddick 15 month old son of Robert and Lynda Gibson Fiddick of 1101 Lilac Lane Cedar Falls. He died Friday morning February 16 at Sartor Memorial Hospital Cedar Falls. Born November 5 1987 in Cedar Falls he leaves a brother James a sister Julie paternal grandparents Floyd Fiddick maternal grandmother Marion Gibson and great grandparents George Stewart Bristow. He was preceded in death by grandfather Marien Gibson.
The Greene Community Chorus will rehearse Sunday afternoon February 25 at 4:00 in the high school vocal music room. Persons wishing to sing in the spring concert should plan to attend. The chorus will be performing.
A report will be made to Representative Chari about the Grassley meeting held in the morning. He collaborates with citizens and the information gathered will be handed to him upon collection.
The 72 piece Luther College Concert Band under Prof Weston H Noble will perform at Greene High School gym on March 3. Noble, a renowned director and chair of Luther College music, is sought after for clinics and guest directing roles. Continued on page 10.
On Palm Sunday April 25 the music features the cantata No Greater Love by John W. Peterson. New chorus members are welcome to join the choir for the performance.
All Greene County women are asked to mark March 2 at 2 p.m. for World Day of Prayer services at St Marys Catholic Church. Women from Catholic Lutheran Methodist Presbyterian and Brethren churches will participate in this international prayer gathering spanning 168 countries. Mrs Dan Barth chairs Greene activities and bulletins on Feb 25 will carry tract and offering envelopes for collection.
Marble Rock Church Women United unit will observe World Day of Prayer at 10 a.m. Friday March 2 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Roseville. Women across 168 countries join in prayer for the theme Alert in our Time.
The Greene Cub Scout Pack hosts a Blue and Gold Banquet at the Greene Community Center starting at 6 30 p m on February 28. Akela Indian dancers from Clear Lake will perform as part of the program and awards will be presented.
Butler County Supervisors set a special election for Tuesday April 10 on a proposed 940000 bond for a new Allison Court House. The plan would use 800000 of Revenue Sharing funds and commit 150000 annually from RS funds 1973 1974 1975 1976 to cover debt with tax levies only if RS funds end. A Citizens Committee led by Herman Faber urged action to replace the 1881 facility and suggested using RS funds to retire debt to limit taxes. Ground would be at the present Court House site with a 161 by 85 foot building and a basement.
The Church of the Brethren in Greene Iowa plans a Centennial Celebration on Sunday July 15 1973 to mark the founding in October 1855 by German Baptist Brethren. The Coldwater Church of the Brethren was organized in 1857 with 14 members and the 1873 native stone building remains largely unchanged.
No Athletes in Action events for wrestlers this weekend due to state tournaments. Next weekend marks the start of the 9-12 year old wrestling tournament.
Farmers Incorporated Co operative Society of Greene will hold its 67th annual meeting in the Community School Auditorium on Saturday March 3 1973. Lunch starts at 6 p.m. The business meeting begins at 7 35 p.m. Elections will be held for three directors and other business may come before the meeting.
Webelos Den 1 will be transferred to the Boy Scout Troop in a special ceremony. Webelos earning the Arrow of Light award will also be honored, as will this year's den chiefs.
A Key 73 religious survey will canvass about 800 homes in Greene Community School District on Sunday March 4 as part of a county wide effort. About 175 volunteers from Methodist Brethren Presbyterian Catholic and Lutheran churches will visit roughly five homes each collecting church affiliation information and will resurvey on March 11 if needed. Training sessions are scheduled February 25 at St Marys Catholic Church Hall and February 27 at the Presbyterian Church.
Local notice seeks boys who will be eight soon or are eight now to join Cub Scouts. Interested families should contact Fred Hawker at the Greene Recorder, 823 4525. If there is enough interest a new den will be formed.
