Dorothy Mark director of social welfare for Butler County will present at the Woman's Club of Greene meeting on Tuesday February 20 at 7 30 pm in the Community Center. The talk covers Butler County social services programs including public assistance child and adult welfare foster care adoption and agency referrals. Robbin Helm Wins UNI Music Scholarship and European Tour Invite
Greene High School oboist Robbin Helm received a 300 year scholarship from the University of Northern Iowa and an invitation to audition for a European Youth Concert tour capped by Carnegie Hall. The 18 year old, daughter of Mr and Mrs Harlan Helm, auditioned Feb 3 at UNI, earning one of seven scholarships from 21 finalists. She also earned a chance to join a Universal Academy of Music tour of five European countries. Helm has held multiple top chairs in regional ensembles and was invited to perform with the UNI band in a March 22 concert.

Mrs. Louis W. Kamp of Madison Wisconsin died February 8 after a long illness. She was born March 29 1924 in Union Iowa and lived in Greene Bristow before moving to Madison. Survivors include her husband Louis a daughter Janelle nee Duffield DiVall of Lancaster Wisconsin a son Dennis Kamp a sister and two grandchildren. Memorials to Cancer Society or Church of Christ. Rites Held for Harold Ruffridge in Minneapolis
The death of Harold Ruffridge was reported to his brother Earl Ruffridge. Services were held Thursday February 10 at 10 30 a m at Washburn McReavy Chapel Minneapolis. Alert train crew avert major accident near Greene
An 8:25 am derailment of the first car of a 66 car Rock Island freight train near Greene prompted swift action by engineer Howard Tuttle and conductor Richard Vileta. They stopped the 30 mph train within about 25 pole lengths, preventing a potential derailment at the Rendering Plant crossing. Crews from Cedar Rapids aided rerails and inspections, with praise from station agent Florian Katz and brakeman D R Keister for their quick, coordinated response.
