Instrumental students from Greene Community Schools took part in Mason City on February 16. Out of 22 entries, 11 earned superior ratings. Joseph E Nauman of Greene Iowa is named to the first semester honor roll at Loras College in Dubuque as a junior ecclesiastical student. A total of 278 students earned honor rolls this semester.
Public library adds a batch of teen and children titles. Henry F True son of Henry True and Louise Conrad was born November 28 1889 near Bristow and died February 15 in Greene at 67 2 18 after a stroke heart attack and complications. He married Dorothea Edeker in 1910 and farmed near Bristow before retiring to Greene in 1945. Surviving are wife two sons a daughter six grandchildren a brother and two sisters. Funeral at St Peters Lutheran Greene officiated by Rev I J Devies burial in North Wilmar Cemetery Williams Mortuary in charge.
The fall quarter honor roll at Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls lists Roger Moser son of Mr and Mrs Clark Moser Greene among students with 3.25 grades or higher. He is in his fourth year majoring in science.
Greene will host the Class A Sectional tournament for three days starting February 26. Rockford faces Nashua at 7:30 p.m. February 26, with the winner meeting Clarksville on February 28. An 8:30 p.m. game pits Nora Springs versus Greene, both with byes. The final is March 2 at 7:30 p.m. The sectional winner meets the Aplington winner March 11 at 7:36 p.m. Greene also hosts the Class B District semi finals March 13.
The City Bowling Association open championship held February 27 announced handicapped results. In singles Paul Cheney won with 675. Donovan Buffridge was second with 626, followed by Lyle Shultz 622, Dick Mikelson 621, Emery Dickman 607, P. Sinram 591, Sam Sneed 585, and Dale Willey with Paul Hamilton tied for eighth at 579. Doubles winners: John Hamilton and Glen Shaffer 1206, Ralph Marsh and Sam Sneed 1179, Dale Willey and Lyle Shultz 1175, Fred Nordmeyer and Roy Henlie 1146, Paul Cheney and Paul Hamilton 1149. Trophies awarded to top finishers. team championship to roll next Sunday, February 24.
Mrs Trim Truex Carl Truex and Galen Shultz took Mrs Truex’s mother Mrs Laura Miller to Des Moines on Wednesday then fly to San Francisco to visit another daughter Mrs Ray Burnell. Mrs Miller is 93 years old.
U S congressman H R Gross of Waterloo said Chairman Harold Cooley of the House Agriculture Committee agreed to study price spreads between farm producers and consumers and to form a subcommittee to investigate quickly. He presented petitions from hundreds of Third Iowa farmers in Bremer Butler Grundy Franklin and Floyd counties urging action on egg price disparities.
More than one thousand people attended the Iowa State College Extension New Ideas for Land and Living Caravan at Greene High School Auditorium on February 14. The event featured twenty three extension specialists and county directors with demonstrations on farming, home economics, lawn care, landscaping, and teen needs surveys.
Butler County Conservation Board met at Allison on February 13 to review several projects and plan future survey work. The board invites public input and lists members Ellie Shipman Shell Rock Iver Bloomfield Parkersburg Herman Faber Parkersburg Wayne Weinberg Clarksville Tom Albrecht Greene. Next meeting is March 12 at 1 30 pm in Parkersburg.
The Town High School Speech Association held a preliminary contest at Hampton on February 13 with nine schools in eight events. Four local entrants advanced to districts: Karen Curtis dramatic reading The Littlest Angel Sandra Marsh humorous reading The Chatterbox Margie Noehl humorous reading I Like Men Why I am a Bachelor and a one act play with cast Verlene Barth Bruce Marsh Wendell Debner Jeanne Wildman Belva Tindall Margie Noehl. Judy Willey directed and Doug Becker was stage manager. Debaters met February 19 at West High School Waterloo with the national farm policy question.
Richard B Funnel 72 died February 13 at Good Samaritan Home Rockford after a weeklong illness. Survived by wife, three daughters Verle Baith Greene, Bert Kerr Hampton, J W Salsbury Carroll. three sons Charles Harsell, Robert Grundy Center, Orville Bellota California. 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Services Sunday at Vogel Funeral Home Dumont, burial Harlan Cemetery.
A public fund drive for Heart Research will run from Sunday February 24 through Wednesday February 27. Mrs B G Brunsma chairs the effort with assistants Mrs Dell Curtis Mrs James Mead and Mrs Keith Drake. About 30 workers will canvass homes and leave brown envelopes for contributions by those not at home.
Rev Clair Salters of Forest City will conduct special services at Calvary Baptist Church in Greene each evening from February 21 through March 3 at 8 00 oclock. Timely Bible centered messages will be presented with 4 X 13 foot charts. Salters is a Moody Bible Institute and Central College graduate and former Omaha Bible Institute instructor who has pastored in Iowa for ten years, currently at Forest City.

Last weeks bowling results recap matches played Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Bristow Elevator, Nettleton Insurance, John Deere Implement, Miller Real Estate, and others posted scores with Sneed toping high singles and series. Standings show Bristow Elevator defeating Nettleton Insurance and Miller Real Estate beating various opponents. February 14 is cited with Farm Bureau leading over Schaeffers and Lutheran Brotherhood.
The Manly Railroaders upset the Ramblers 65 55 in Mason City to reach the Girls District tournament semifinals led by Karen Siemens 24 and Jackie Marsh 21. Judy Ryan added crucial free throws as Manly built and held the early lead before a late surge by Greene.
Iowa residents bought nearly 20 million dollars in U S savings bonds in January, representing 14 percent of the state 1957 quota of 143 million. John McWhirter of Allison, volunteer chairman, said January purchases of series E and H totaled 126,940 dollars, about 13 percent of the county’s 1957 quota of 948,352. The Iowa state quota for the year was reduced from 1956, and county quotas in the state were also lowered.
1st Lt. and Mrs. David L. Graven and children Mark and Karl arrived in New York by a lane from Germany on Friday February 15. They will discharge at a nearby army post and are expected to arrive in Greene this weekend.
