The First Methodist Church in Charles City hosts a seminar titled The Church at Work With Adults on February 24 at 3 30 p m. Sponsored by the Waterloo District of The Methodist Church, the event features Rev Dr A Merritt Dietterich and Rev LeRoy Bauman. Counties expected include Black Hawk Bremer Buchanan Butler Cerro Gordo Chickasaw Floyd Franklin Howard Mitchell and Worth.
New residents Mr and Mrs Edwin Freese of Dumont welcome son Mark Duane born February 6 weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce. Mrs Freese is Emma Jane Studer of Greene. Mr and Mrs Duane Chase of Iowa City welcome son born January 7 at University Hospital weighing 8 pounds 11 ounces named Jeffery Charles. Mr and Mrs William Astor welcome son born February 8 at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City weighing 9 pounds 13 ounces.
National Farmers Organization will hold a meeting at the American Legion Hall in Allison on Monday February 18 at 7 30 p m Karl Lilley of Coryden Wayne County will be the guest speaker All interested farmers are urged to attend.
Iowa State College previews the New Ideas for Land and Living show at Greene High School auditorium tomorrow Thursday February 14. The exhibit runs 1 00 to 4 00 pm and 7 00 to 9 00 pm with displays on water resources grasses farming weed control land improvement milking and milk handling egg grading health in stock farming breakfast planning and home furnishings. About 25 specialists including Harriet Roberts and W F Bennett will be on hand to answer questions and discuss problems for farmers townspeople homemakers and children.
Murphy Transportation wins team event with 2163 points led by Gertie Marsh 479 and Loretta Miller 413. Marsh Behnke win doubles 929, Bliss tops singles with 488, Marsh leads all events 1345 pins. Marshall Swift second, Marilyn’s Beauty Shop third. other top scorers listed with handicaps and totals.
The Charles City Iowa State Employment Service office will host weekly Farm Clinics from 1 to 4 PM at 608 Riverside Drive starting February 14. The clinics help farm employers discuss salary hours housing and other terms with workers. Volunteer Farmer Representatives across Butler County provide information and assistance.
William C. Shook born May 25 1867 Greene Kansas died Saturday February 9 in New Hartford at age 89 years 8 months. He married Selah Townsend on October 15 1891 in Smith Center Kansas and had three sons Harry Dale and Carl. Survived by three sons two grandchildren two great grandchildren and a final rites at Greene Funeral Chapel with Rev. G F Butler. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The Greene Junior High basketball team beat Dumont 21 to 19 to reach the county junior high tournament semi finals at Dumont. They next face New Hartford Junior High at Dumont on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
Plans are moving forward for a tour of the new elementary school buildings in Postville and Monona. The event on February 23 will start from the Greene high school at 8:00 A.M. Bus transport and lunch are arranged. those who drive may join the luncheon group.
Congressman H R Gross of Waterloo says he will present petitions with hundreds of signatures from Bremer Butler Grundy Franklin and Floyd counties seeking a House Agriculture Committee investigation into price spreads between producers and consumers, especially for eggs. He plans to press Chairman Harold Cooley to make this a top priority and notes a poultry and egg subcommittee may soon be formed.
The Greene Fire Department was dispatched to the Raymond Schmidt residence four miles east of Greene on Thursday at 7 30 pm to extinguish a fire believed caused by a stove pipe igniting the bedroom floor which then set the mattress aflame.
Arthur Lindell Jr a Camp Pendleton California resident received a monetary award on his 21st birthday February 12 for refraining from drinking and smoking from age 15. He chose cash value of a new car, becoming the third son to win the award. his father A F Lindell presented the prize.
Charles R. Shepard, born June 7, 1884 in Clarksville, died February 12 at his Clarksville home after a daylong illness. Survived by wife Margaret two daughters Mrs. Charles Eggleston Waterloo and Mrs. Harold James Tacoma WA and six grandsons. Funeral services are pending.
Scrappy Jackie Marsh scored the deciding lay up with three seconds left to lift Dennis Mair's Greene Charge to a 39 38 win over Dumont and claim the Girls Sectional Championship at Hansell. Greene defeated Chapin 35 27 and Rockwell 47 46 to reach the final, with Marsh totaling 19 points and Lockwood 10 as Greene edged Rockwell in a thriller.
Jens H Petersen died at his Greene home on Sunday morning February 10 after a heart attack at age 66 years 4 months and 13 days. Born September 28 1890 in Them Denmark he later lived in Kleshorn Iowa Frederick Wisconsin Waterloo and Greene engaging in carpentry farming blacksmith work and turkey farming. He leaves wife four children eleven grandchildren two brothers two sisters and several relatives. Funeral services are at St Peters Lutheran Church at 2 pm with Rev I J Deies officiating burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The Church of the Brethren hosts evangelistic meetings February 12 through 24 with nightly starts at 7:30 or 8:06, noon pot luck meals on Sundays February 17 and 24, and Rev. Russell West of Wiley Colorado opening the series on "The Marks of a Great Revival."

The Greene Community Schools will hold its first regular school board election on March 11. Incumbents Dale Crosby and Francis Brinkman aim for the three year term, with nominations restricted to the old Greene Independent School District per a Gentlemen's Agreement to keep board membership spread across the district. Nomination forms are at Marjorie Wolters, District Secretary, with papers due by noon March 1 to appear on the ballot.
Officers and directors of the American Cancer Society of Butler County met February 6, 1957 in Allison. Plans for the year include placing the book Truth About Cancer in all county schools and public libraries. A memorial book will be displayed at the Butler County Fair American Cancer Society Booth each year. Bulletins about the chapter will be distributed in county churches on National Cancer Sunday April 6. Attend church to get yours.
