The editor notes the river ice cleared by last Wednesday reducing flood risk from last year. He questions U S policy in Viet Nam amid Congressional hearings and power struggles among Congress, the President, and the military. He suggests unity in decisive action but finds consensus elusive.
In Floyd County, Robert Kock was admitted to the Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Friday evening for observation and treatment. Mrs Ray DeVries traveled to Rochester Minnesota for treatment and examination at the Mayo Clinic and is staying at the Martin Hotel.
The Butler County Board of Supervisors awarded multiple contracts this winter. Low bids won for two hydraulic drive PTO sand and salt spreaders from All-Wheel Drive Co. Fort Dodge at 3694. Other bidders were Herman M. Brown Co. 3800 and Hanstrom Hubly 3865. Spreaders made by Henderson Manufacturing Manchester Iowa are in operation. A second letting awarded two motor graders with bids led by Vivian Equipment for LeTourneau-Westinghouse Model 666 at 20687. An alternate bid offered a new demonstrator at 16687. Other bids included Gibbs-Cook 22901 for Caterpillar 120B and Hanstrom Hubly 20900 for Allis Chalmers M-100. The traded machine was a 1942 Allis Chalmers at Ardale. An alternate bid of 20000 with a reconditioned V-plow was accepted. Other bids were 21387 LeTourneau-Westinghouse and 24901 Caterpillar. A quotation of 12.25 cents per gallon for weed and brush killer spraying along Butler County roads was accepted with Edwards Spraying and Construction Co. Pleasantville. The contract has a 14014 maximum to cover most roads in the county and work is planned for late June.
Danny Botterbrodt nine month old son of Mr. and Mrs. David Botterbrodt was admitted to Scholtz Memorial Hospital at Waterloo on Monday where both legs were put in casts to straighten a foot disorder He was brought home on Tuesday.
The Butler County Grand Jury for February 1966 finds the County Home well run, reviews jail confinement, and reports no misconduct in county offices. They note no highway obstructions, proper accounting of fines and fees, and state audits show funds properly accounted for.
John O'Brien son of Mrs. George O'Brien trains as a pilot in Dallas for American Airlines. After graduating March 1 he will be based in Chicago. He received an honorable discharge from the U S Navy in November 1955 after serving four years and being commissioned a lieutenant. His wife Diane Nelson of Lafayette Louisiana and their seven month old daughter Lorena Kathleen are visiting his mother.
Rabbit hunters have a few days left as the season ends February 20. The State Conservation Commission issued the closing reminder today. Despite generally high rabbit populations statewide, light hunting pressure came from the lack of snow cover during most of the season.
Butler County records show $30,947 spent on public assistance in January. Old Age Assistance totaled $2,456,103 nationally with local beneficiaries totaling $17,643 to 176 recipients in Butler County.
Robert Curtis, local postmaster, announced the local post office will close all day Tuesday February 22 in observance of Washingtons Birthday. Mail will be dispatched and distributed as usual but there will be no rural delivery.
The Ramblers defeated Rockford 63 to 54 to pull Greene into a tie for second place in the conference behind the Warriors. John Barth and Daryl Barnett led scoring with 24 and 16 points respectively, while Rockford’s Ron Gregory fueled the visitors’ early lead. Greene’s defense and late baskets sealed the win despite 18 Ramblers turnovers.
Dougherty's Rambler matmen—Doug Trees Larry Noel Dick Wihli and Clark Allen—secured spots to the district tournament at Osage after finishing third in the sectional. Osage led with 116 points while Rockford and Greene trailed, with results detailed for each weight class and advancing wrestlers. Greene heads to Osage Friday for the district with semifinals and finals set for Saturday.
Farmers in Mason City are invited to a three day Farm Materials Handling event at the North Town Fairgrounds on February 22 23 and 24 from 9 30 to 4 40 daily. Over 50 manufacturers distributors and dealers will display more than 100 specialized pieces of equipment. Co sponsored by Utility Companies of Iowa Iowa State University Extension Service and Successful Farming magazine. Admission and parking are free.
James Eggena of Greene appeared in the court of Mayor Bamker on a charge of parking in a street. He paid a five dollar fine and four dollars in court costs.

Mr and Mrs Cliff Dulin returned home last week after a three months visit with their son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs Clarence Dulin in Portland Oregon and with their daughter Mrs Hazel Bettesworth and family in Vancouver Washington.
A series of Pre Lenten Services will be held at the Methodist Church from February 20 to 23. Rev. Dwight Hendricks of First Methodist Church St Charles Minnesota will speak after studying at Minnesota Upper Town and Dubuque. Youth services 7:30 p.m. each evening in Memorial Room. Congregational service at 3:00 p.m.
James Roy Bochmann aged 19, son of Mr and Mrs Henry F Bochmann of Greene, has enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for three years. He will report to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego for eight weeks of basic training, then transfer to Camp Pendleton California. After four weeks of individual combat training he will receive his first military leave. Bochmann enlisted via the Marine Corps Recruiting Office in Waterloo and a Marine representative attends the Selective Service office in Allison.
Auditor L R Worthington announced the 1964 Butler County audit is filed for public inspection. He highlighted lack of temporary investments of idle cash, $24,320.99 unbudgeted Bovine Tuberculosis fund disbursements, and tax receipt reconciliation. Total 1964 property tax receipts were $2,775,702.97 with $1,774,110.54 for school districts.
Greene Ramblerettes split two sectional games, beating Nora Springs 89 to 66 at Latimer before losing to Meservey-Thornton 77 to 54 at Rockford. The loss puts Greene in a consolation game versus Rockwell-Swaledale Thursday night aiming to reach district play.
Richard Bruns returned home Friday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City where he was a patient for two weeks of treatment.
Steve Mead son of Mr and Mrs James Mead has been elected pledge trainer of Alpha Gamma Rho at Iowa State University He is a freshman majoring in Veterinary Medicine and has served as corresponding secretary of Pre Vet club president and VP of his pledge class and was in Stars Over Voeishea stage crew He is a Phi Eta Sigma initiate and now a member of the Junior American Veterinary Medical Association Alpha Gamma Rho is one of 34 fraternities at Iowa State with 74 members and a new house under construction to be ready next fall.
Mr and Mrs dale Crosby and Mr and Mrs George Menken returned home Saturday from a two weeks sightseeing trip to California. Crosby visited his owner and aunt Mr and Mrs Ray Crosby at Santa Cruz and other relatives. Menken visited Mrs Menken's sister Miss Myrtle Poppe at Englewood.
Ronald Stewart will arrive home today from Camp Pendleton California to spend a twenty day leave with his parents Mr and Mrs Kenneth Stewart At the end of the leave he will report back to the Marine base in Memphis Tennessee
Private El Mace Bammann starts a two week furlough with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Bammann after completing basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. He will return to Fort Leonard Wood for further training.
