Lyman Mason 61 died at his home in Morrison Iowa on Friday afternoon. A former Marble Rock section foreman for the Rock Island Railroad, he later moved to Greene still in railroad service. Funeral services were held at Reinbeck Sunday. Survived by wife two married daughters Mary Verna of California and Donna of Reinbeck and several grandchildren.
Confirmation services will be held at St John Lutheran Church Wilmar on Sunday February 10. Those to be confirmed are Mari Ann Menken Mary Lysbeth Roose Janice Kay Heuer John Reverts Darrell Fred Prange Maynard Henry Bockman and Henry Lester Rover.
Dallas Kent Brinkman son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Brinkman was baptized Sunday morning at St Peter's Lutheran Church. Sponsors were Fred Brinkman and Theodore Brinkman.
Mrs. Harold Holzschuh, local chairman, reports that $507.86 has been collected to date. The cake auction raised $26.75, the Veterans Club dance and lunch brought in $57 and $16.46 respectively, and the Greene-Nora Springs basketball game plus store coin holders yielded $31.75 and $46. Contributions continue from various organizations and individuals who have not yet sent envelopes.
Butler county town and township workers for the 1957 Heart Fund campaign have been named for February. County chairman is Allison’s Jane Ed DeBower. publicity chair is Erwin L Klingbeil. treasurer is Parker Schmitz. The drive supports the American Heart Association research and public health fight against heart and circulatory diseases.
David L Graven, after 2 1/2 years with the U S Army in Germany, will be discharged about February 15 and his family plans to arrive in Greene around February 20. Keith J Butler, son of Rev G F Butler, left for service January 1 and is at Lackland AFB San Antonio Texas training as an aviation cadet with address A C Keith J Butler A D 17485236 Box 1540 Gp 2 L-05 Bravo 1 Lackland AFB San Antonio Texas.
Edwin Scheer of Bristow and Bruce Eckles of Aplington led Butler County Farm Bureau at a Des Moines Iowa Farm Bureau Federation meeting. County officers urged producers to avoid increasing hog numbers to protect hog prices, warning that Iowa farmers could lose millions if numbers rise in 1957.
A two session Extension Caravan titled New Ideas for Land and Living will run at Greene High School on Thursday February 14 from 1 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. Visitors may come and go to see about 20 exhibits on grasses landscaping egg grades livestock diseases food clothing home furnishings milk handling and related topics with Dr Maynard Spear ISU extension veterinarian present on human transmissible livestock diseases. Others include Ralph Krenzin agronomist and Opal Roberson extension clothing specialist with no admission charge sponsored by Iowa State College and Butler County Agricultural Extension Council. The event aims to inform Iowa families about new useful ideas in agriculture and home economics.
Henry Martzahn 81 died from a cerebral hemorrhage February 2 at his son Roy Martzahn’s home. He was born December 20, 1875 in Lowden Iowa and married Anna Bachmann March 9 1898. Survivors include son Roy Greene daughters Mrs Albert Steere Greene and Mrs Raymond Wolf Charles City, seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Services were February 5 at St Peter’s Lutheran Church with Rev I J Deies officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Greene Funeral Chapel supervised arrangements.
Four cars were involved in a Sunday morning crash on Highway 18 one and a half miles east of Mason City. Dean W. Keifer 20 Eugene Rague 24 and Darlene Baldwin 16 and Archie Elsbury 45 were hospitalized at Mercy hospital Mason City with serious injuries. Keifer suffered head and abdominal injuries and a brain concussion. Rague had a cut throat and facial cuts. Baldwin concussion and facial cuts. Elsbury cuts and a broken kneecap. Joss driver of the eastbound car and Young driver of the westbound car were not injured. Keifer’s 1957 Bel Aire Hardtop Chevrolet was wrecked.
New residents Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Heitz of Charles City welcomed a son, Randolph Eugene, born January 29 at Cedar Valley hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Mrs. Heitz, formerly Darlene Baxter of Powersville, shares the birth with another local family. Mr. and Mrs. John W. Whitehead welcomed a daughter, Ellen Mae, born February 2 at Cedar Valley hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces.
Mrs. Ed Wilson reports the death of her brother John Maxwell in Seattle Washington on January 25 He was born near Greene in 1879 to Mr and Mrs John Maxwell He later lived in Denver for many years before moving to Seattle where he passed away
The School Board schedules a community tour to inspect new grade schools in Postville and Monona on Saturday February 23 with bus transportation and a noon meal provided. The event aims to help residents judge school building designs and influence architect selection as part of bond issue planning.
Greene boys beat Nora Springs 57 46 as Bob Andersen scored 12 opening points and Jim Graven added key boards. Nora Springs girls won 51 46 while Greene girls fell 91 46. Halverson led Greene with 14 third quarter points and 84 total for the visitors. Boy Scout Week February 6 12 observance theme Onward for God and My Country noted with church services in uniform and community tributes.
Mrs C V Lockwood returned home Saturday from Cedar Valley hospital and is convalescing at the Clark Rest Home. Mr Lockwood is also at the Rest Home.
The Church of the Brethren in Greene will hold Evangelistic Services each evening from February 12 through the 21st at 7 30 Rev Russell Greene West of Wiley Colorado will conduct the preaching services Topics for Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are Marks of a Great Revival and If there's a World Tomorrow Public invited to participate
Butler County voters will choose two County Board of Education members on Monday March 11 1957. One member from Election Area No Four for six years then an at large member whose term ends April 1963. Nomination papers available at the County Superintendent of Schools office in Allison and due by February 19 1957.
Greene merchants defeated Marble Rock 73 to 50 on Marble Rock’s floor Saturday night. The game stayed close until Greene pulled away in the final period. Spratt led Greene with 18 points followed by Nichol and O'Brien with 17 each Schafer 13 and Teeple 8 to complete scoring.
About two hundred people attended a noon luncheon and meeting of the Farmers Co operative Creamery in the high school gym Saturday. Leo Benson of Iowa State Creameries spoke on the future of dairying, with Duane Frisbie outlining the milk grading program. Officers reelected for 1957 were Clair Johnson president Leonard Litterer vice president and Duane Smith secretary treasurer. directors were Harry Ott Harley Hansen and Charles Pyatt. Butter production for 1956 totaled 1,191,187 pounds.
Directors of Investors Stock Fund Inc have declared a quarterly dividend of 100 cents per share payable February 7 to shareholders of record January 31. Joseph M. Fitzsimmons, chairman, announced the dividend will be distributed from net investment income and is the 46th consecutive payout by the fund.
