Island clearing eyed to reduce flood risk and dread

Greene residents consider removing trees from the city dump island to lower flood risk. The state owns the island but may permit leveling it by dynamite if it threatens homes and businesses yearly. Meanwhile a flu outbreak and mosquitoes fade in comparison to college presidents suffering from illness.

Greene Rams defeated Rockford 26 to 19 as Doug Trees and Jerome Marten sparked wins. Individual results show Albrecht forfeit at 95, Trees threw Bushbaum at 120, and Katcher and Siemens won decisions. North Central at Manly lost 54 to 0 with several Greene pins and forfeits.

Flu Epidemic Impacts Greene School Students

The Greene Community School faces a flu outbreak that began last Wednesday. By Monday 129 elementary and 76 junior high high students were absent. by Tuesday 122 elementary and 68 junior high high were out. Six elementary students were sent home Monday, four Tuesday, and ten junior high high students left early.

Dale E. Schroeder, volunteer county saving bonds chairman, reported that Butler County's 1968 Series E and H Bonds and Freedom Shares total reached 447,675 dollars, 55 percent of its 1968 quota. Iowa's December sales totaled 6,573,482 dollars, giving 1968 year sales at 8,545,082 dollars, 77 percent of the 1968 goal. Iowa set a 1969 goal of 87,600,000 dollars, with Butler County's 1969 goal at 491,335 dollars.
