Greene residents consider removing trees from the city dump island to lower flood risk. The state owns the island but may permit leveling it by dynamite if it threatens homes and businesses yearly. Meanwhile a flu outbreak and mosquitoes fade in comparison to college presidents suffering from illness.
Greene Rams defeated Rockford 26 to 19 as Doug Trees and Jerome Marten sparked wins. Individual results show Albrecht forfeit at 95, Trees threw Bushbaum at 120, and Katcher and Siemens won decisions. North Central at Manly lost 54 to 0 with several Greene pins and forfeits.
The Greene Community School faces a flu outbreak that began last Wednesday. By Monday 129 elementary and 76 junior high high students were absent. by Tuesday 122 elementary and 68 junior high high were out. Six elementary students were sent home Monday, four Tuesday, and ten junior high high students left early.
Dale E Poppe reports that his son L. Cpl. Dean M. Poppe has received a meritorious mast from his Marine aircraft group for initiative in maintaining personnel and training records. Dean serves as an avionics administrative assistant at El Toro in California, with the address 2379952 H&MS-33 MA GB M. C. A. S. El Toro CA 92709.
Mr and Mrs Don Kielman of Clarksville celebrate the birth of Torie Donald February 6 at Mercy Hospital in Waverly. Grandparents are Mr Otto Kielman of Clarksville and Mrs Tillie Kielman of Greene, with a brother named Danny awaiting his arrival at home.
Auction notices list Fred Paul on February 13 and Mrs Francis Lubben plus Vernien Reints on February 15, with Robert Fiddick on February 11 next week. Listings include farm machinery alfalfa straw and silage as featured items in the Recorder.
The Extension Service invites corn and soybean producers in Butler and Grundy Counties to a Corn-Soybean Clinic on February 21 from 9 30 to 3 30 at Parkersburg Methodist Church basement. Dr Regis Voss Extension agronomist from Iowa State University Kay A Connelly Extension area agronomist and Wayne Halstead Grundy County Extension Director will cover fertility seed bed prep planting dates and rates disease problems and production costs. Mr and Mrs Fred Fowler and Mr and Mrs Arvid Lindell recently toured Rosedown Plantation and Gardens in St Francisville Louisiana. The visit highlighted the winter camellia bloom and referenced the area’s Audubon heritage with his bird life studies from over a century ago.
George Peters and Mrs. August Hauser were recently released from Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, marking their return home after a period of medical care.
L. F. Bachman was appointed superintendent of the Greene Community School System for the remainder of the year by the board at Monday night's meeting. He replaces V. J. Tatum, who leaves for a position in Mayville Wisconsin.
The boys basketball game between Allison and Greene, set for February 19, is postponed to Friday, February 71, and will be held in the Greene auditorium.
State Senator Vernon H. Kyhl discusses his Iowa trip for a symposium on student power, denounces university platform language, opposes the Great Plains report’s consolidation plan, and supports a bill exempting school buses from studded tire restrictions from November to April to boost safety and reduce costs.
Greene High School earns recognition as one of the four top Class B bands in Iowa, with the Greene Recorder noting the honor in Iowa Bandmaster Magazine. Ray Holtz credits continued student effort and community support, while the Greene band program serves 225 students from grades 5 to 12 and fields multiple ensembles.
Extension sponsored short course More For Your Money will cover money matters credit terms and interest calculations. Karen B. Hull of Iowa State University will discuss money in marriage and family business affairs at the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison. Register by February 19 at the County Extension office Allison.
Vernon H. Kuhl, chairman of the Butler County Heart Association fund drive, announced a workshop meeting for town and township chairmen and other workers on Saturday February 15, 1969. The event will be held at the R. E. A. office in Allison.
The Greene team will wrestle in the Janesville sectional today at 4 30 p m with seven teams entered North Central Manly Nora Springs Clarksville New Hampton Dike Janesville and Greene The finals are slated for about 7 30 p m The district tourney follows February 21 22 at Jesup.
Michael Kiefer son of Mr and Mrs Dean Keifer is home from the hospital where he was treated for a respiratory infection. He will recuperate for about a week.
In Iowa City University Hospital since January 29, August Hauser remains hospitalized for treatment. Mrs Albert Behnke was admitted to St Josephs Mercy Hospital Waverly on Thursday for medication and treatment. Her daughter Mrs Ray M Holzschuh has traveled from Portland Oregon to be with her.
The city bowling tournaments concluded with two classes by average. Nordmeyer Construction led Handicap Team and El Bar Lanes claimed top team honors. Doubles titles went to Bob Curtis and Jim McLennan in Class A scratch, with other standout scores from Nordmeyer, El Bar Lanes, and Class B doubles winners Craig Fishel and Kenneth Wangness.
The Greene girls basketball team faces Clarksville eagerettes in sectional play at Rockford Saturday at 6 30 p m. The winner advances to meet Allison Bristow at Tripoli Monday February 11th at 6 30 p m. Semis and finals at Aplington February 20th and 22nd. William Cheney is hospitalized in Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City for treatment.
Ramblers and Ramblerettes clinched Corn Bowl Conference basketball titles with big wins over Rockford. Ramblerettes beat Rockford 85 to 59 to extend their conference winning streak to 67 and claim the crown for seven straight years. Greene Ramblers crushed Rockford 86 to 35 as Siemens led with 28 points and Jim Shultz added 22.
Extension sponsors a Corn-Soybean Profit Conference at Osage Municipal Building February 17 from 9:30 a m to 3:00 p m. Floyd and Mitchell County growers will hear Iowa State University agronomists Dr. Harvey Thompson and Dr. Regis Voss and Extension Area Crop Production Specialist Dale Studt on hybrid selection yield trials cost saving practices and costs of corn and soybean production including tillage and fertilizer economics.
Mrs. Iva Barnett is a patient undergoing treatment at University Hospital in Iowa City.
Dale E. Schroeder, volunteer county saving bonds chairman, reported that Butler County's 1968 Series E and H Bonds and Freedom Shares total reached 447,675 dollars, 55 percent of its 1968 quota. Iowa's December sales totaled 6,573,482 dollars, giving 1968 year sales at 8,545,082 dollars, 77 percent of the 1968 goal. Iowa set a 1969 goal of 87,600,000 dollars, with Butler County's 1969 goal at 491,335 dollars.
Airman Allan R. Whiteside son of Mr and Mrs Leland R Whiteside of Clarksville Town completed basic training at Lackland AFB and is assigned to Sheppard AFB Texas for civil engineering training in structural and pavements. A 1967 Greene Community High School graduate, he attended Pillsbury Baptist Bible College in Owatonna Minnesota.
Viers Pamaiod Dennis L. Wiers, 23, son of Mr and Mrs Eugene R Wiers, was promoted to Army specialist five January 11 in Vietnam while serving as a mess steward with Battery D 2nd Battalion 320th Artillery 01st Airborne Division Airmobile. His wife Martha lives in LeCompte Louisiana.
