A Mason City preliminary speech contest yielded two Greene High School students earning a one rating and advancement to the District meet at West Union on March 6 and 7. Winners were Jan Fletcher for dramatic reading Heat Lightning and Bruce Mead for humorous What It Was Was Football. Second place honors went to Craig Burroughs The Gifted Child, Linda Jackson Little Orphan Annie, Rita Kepple The Vagabonds, Larry Williamson The Broken Doll, Sally Bartels Magic Night, Leanne Neilsen Hunguh, and Mary Gersema Lumber On. The one act play Ladies of the Mop featured Maureen Allison, Sally Bartels, Jann Fletcher, and Linda Jackson. Debate will be at West High School in Waterloo late this month or early March.
Nine Northeast Iowa science instructors principals and business men and 19 Wartburg College students and faculty members take part in a Radio logical Monitoring class at Wartburg each Thursday from 7 to 9 p m. The course runs Oct 19 to Feb 26 with graduation exercises. Certificates will be presented by C E Fowler state director of civil defense. The program covers theoretical and practical aspects of nuclear warfare including geiger counters and decontamination. Monitors will be qualified to determine hate areas in case of an atomic explosion and judge safe reentry times and food handling. They will receive equipment from the federal government to teach citizens about civil defense. Participants took the course at their own expense, with no college credit. Northeast Iowans include Vern Gard and Clifford Burroughs.
Mrs. Lowell Maxson came home Wednesday after major surgery. Art Pagles left Cedar Valley Hospital Friday after several days of treatment. Mrs. Bird Langenhagen returned home Thursday following major surgery at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City.
Thirty-one farmers in Butler County contract to place cropland in the Conservation Reserve for 3 to 10 years. The total area to be withdrawn is 3,074.9 acres starting 1959 with annual government rental averaging 19.38 dollars per acre. Contracts become effective April 15, and grazing or harvesting is prohibited after that date. Most sign all cropland. one farmer may retire all cropland while remaining on the farm.
Mrs Orley Alden and Mrs Marion Belknap left Sunday for California. Alden will visit her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Jerry Warner and family at San Fernando. Belknap will visit relatives and friends.
A special service to mark World Day of Prayer is set for Friday February 13 at 8:00 p.m. at the Calgary Baptist Church. The program titled He Leadeth Me from Psalm twenty three will be presented by the American Council of Christian Churches. A cordial invitation is extended to the public.
The county commission drew grand and trial jurors for the March 1959 term. Grand jurors listed include Vernon Kyhl Albion, Martin Holm Beaver, Kilard Muller Bennedette, Robert Dempsey Butler, Vivian Kingery Coldwater, Neil Wygle Jackson, Howard Stirling Jefferson, Alvin Uhlenhopp Madison, Mrs Loren Kramer Monroe, Laura Pfaltzgraff Pittsford, Dan Lindaman Shell Rock, Harold Folkerts. West Point trial jurors summoned March 16 at 1 pm span Albion to Shell Rock and Ripley, Washington townships, with jurors named by township and including Carl Boeckemeier, Harm Rieken, Dick Weichers, and many others.
The Iowa Heart Association presented Greene Community School with a plastic heart for science class use. The display currently sits in the Greene Cafe window for students to study the human heart.
Paul Hamilton George Hamilton and Clair Weiss have formed a partnership in Hamilton's Furniture effective January 1, 1959. All three are Greene lifelong residents. Paul Hamilton joined the furniture business in August 1952. Clair Weiss came on March 23, 1955 after service discharge. George Hamilton became active in mid January this year after retiring as bookkeeper from Buchholz and Drakle department store. Paul married to Betty Knight with two children Paul G. and Pamela. Clair Weiss is married to Maribeth Holcomb. they have two children Julie Ann and Mark. George Hamilton and Vera Shook were married in McCook Nebraska. their family includes three sons Robert Don Paul and two daughters Corinne and Mrs. Herbert Formes.
World Day of Prayer services in Greene begin at 8:00 pm at the Church of the Brethren, hosted by a united group of women. Offerings will be collected at the sanctuary entrance for interdenominational mission work through Home Missions. This 78th observance is prepared by Egyptian Christian women.
The Winnebago Council Boy Scouts of America will hold its annual Recognition Dinner on Monday February 1 at the Maly Family church dining room Mason City with 600 guests expected. School administrators in the council area will be honored guests as will leaders den mothers and other adult Scouters. Commander Thomas J Keane U S N R (Ret) Forest Hills NY will be the main speaker and Judge C H Wild council vice president will preside. Three Silver Beavers will be awarded by a committee led by Judge W F Butler of Mason City. The presentation to the men will be by T H Leaver with names to be announced at dinner. Peter S De Jong Scout Executive will close the program. The invocation will be by Rev Charles Haigh and the benediction by Rt Rev Monsignor Arthur J Breen. Tom S Albrecht of Greene is on the recognition dinner committee.
About 200 people attended the Farmers Co operative Creamery Association annual luncheon at Greene Community School on Saturday February 7. Leon Benson of the State Brand Creamerites Mason City spoke and showed slides from his Russia trip. Lowell Allen was elected director for five years, replacing Harry Ott. others on the board remained. Receipts for 1958 totaled $838,805.71 with 1,157.08 pounds of butterfat manufactured.
The Parent-Teacher Association hosted a school carnival on February 4 in the gym for the whole family. A large crowd enjoyed activities including Cake Walk Fish Pond Plush Toy Walk Tilt a Cat Ring Toss Topple the Bottle Bean Bag Throw White Elephant Table and Country Store with cartoons and door prizes from local merchants. The Dixie Land Band directed by Ramon Holtz performed.
Charles Naumann comes home from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after undergoing major surgery on Friday January 30. He is reported in good spirits and recovering at home with family.
Don Hagarty of Greene was elected to a six year term as Butler Soil Conservation District Commissioner at the February 4 meeting at the Farm Bureau auditorium. Duane DeKock of the State Conservation Commission spoke on the Springbrook State Park Conservation Training Camp.
Mr and Mrs Arthur Stark weather announce the birth of a son on Tuesday evening February 3 at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City. The baby weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces and has been named Harlan Arthur.
The Senior Class sponsors a bake sale at Klassi Hardware on Saturday February 14 at 9 00 a m Proceeds support senior activities and scholarships with proceeds benefiting the class.
Mrs. P. C. Peck, chairman, announced the Greene town and rural districts drive raised $201.20. The bake sale on Saturday, January 31 contributed $40.35 to the total.
St. Peter’s Lutheran Church dedicates its new parsonage this Sunday with Dr. H W Siefkes presiding. A noon covered dish dinner precedes open house from 2 to 5 PM. Parsonage measures 32 by 80 feet, cost about 32500 dollars, with four bedrooms, study, baths, living and dining rooms, kitchen, basement and attached garage.
Clarence Hovenga of Aplington paid a 100.00 fine after pleading guilty to resisting arrest before Judge Wild in District Court. Edwin Stauffer of Gilmore City paid 200.00 plus costs after pleading guilty to driving with a suspended license before Judge Wild. Jerome Pitz of Charles City paid 106.00 plus costs after pleading guilty to driving with a suspended license before Judge Wild.
The Greene Sportsman's Club will hold its annual Oyster Stew next Tuesday evening February 17 at the Veterans Club. Serving begins at 6 30 p m. Members and men interested are invited to attend.
Nora Springs and Colwell advance after sectional play as Greene and Rock Falls fall in the first round. Nora Springs defeated Rock Falls 53 to 48 while Colwell beat Greene 63 to 57. Semi finals set for tonight with Colwell versus Plainfield and Nora Springs versus Rockford. Ramblers open Saturday with Waverly at Janesville.
Riceville hosted both boys and girls teams Friday evening and defeated the Ramblers 67 to 41 and the Ramblerettes 61 to 53. The Ramblerettes led by large margins before Riceville rallied in the final period to pull away.
Alr and Mrs Harry Green and Dr and Mrs William A Andrews left this morning for a Florida vacation. They will visit Miami and other places of interest. Mr and Mrs Green go to Nassau Bahamas to visit Bishop Hagarty. They will meet Dr and Mrs Andrews later at Marathon for a Keys trip.
