Girl Scout Troop 265 caroled Monday then returned to the school lunch room for games and refreshments. The burning of the greens will be on the Klassi property along Highway 14 just beyond Dirk's Filling Station on Epiphany Eve January 5 at 7:00 p.m. Public invited. Explorer Scouts led by Leonard Nichol will collect Christmas trees Monday January 2 after dinner. Greene residents urged to place trees on the parkway.
Calf tattooing is planned for December 27 to 30 by the County Extension Service. Calves must be haltered and tied before tattooing. Notify local leader by December 22 if you have calves to enroll. Schedule lists clubs and times for Pittsford Bennedette Coldwater Madison Washington Fremont Dayton Buller Shell Rock Beaver Albion Monroe West Point Jefferson Jackson with tattooing done on the member’s farm and cooperation required to maintain the schedule.
Clair Grendler returned Sunday from Palmex Memorial hospital West Union after an emergency appendectomy last Wednesday. He is the son of Mr and Mrs August Grendler and a student at Upper Iowa University in Fayette. Francis Grendler visits from the University of Iowa in Iowa City and Paul Grendler will come home from the University of Wisconsin to spend the holidays.
In Greene on Wednesday at the December Pack Meeting of Cub Pack 26 awards were presented. Neckerchiefs went to Duane Levins and Doug Jorges. Silver Arrows to Wendell Stuntz, Chuck Berry (2), Doug Willey, Jeff Dralle and Doug Trees. Ten boys earned special neckerchief slides for recruiting a new member.
Mrs. Harrison Bone chair reports that December 15, 1959 receipts from seal sales totaled 260.86 and the 1960 total through December 19 was 311.08. Funds from seals support the Mobile Unit Crays and other Iowa projects.
The Greene Cub Scout basketball team, ages eight to eleven, defeated Clarksville 12 to 0 and Allison 6 to 2 for the younger group, while the older group won 81 to 4 and 14 to 10. Leading scorers included Neil Burroughs, Marty Bramer, and John Barth. They have no games until January 7 when they host Allison.
Corine Lindell, daughter of Mr and Mrs Galene Lindell, came home Saturday from Park Hospital in Mason City where she spent six days being treated for bronchitis and flu.
Mr and Mrs Chris Stewart traveled to Fullerton California to spend the holidays with their son Theodore Stewart and his wife They plan to visit relatives in Texas before returning home
Fred Anderson has returned home from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City where he underwent surgery.
Christmas Eve services at St. Peter's Lutheran feature a multi part program with hymns, recitations, and Scripture readings by Sunday School classes and the congregation. The First Presbyterian Church presents carols, the Christmas Story, prayers, and student performances. The Church of the Brethren hosts a year ending service with preludes, recitations, Christmas carols, and a film.
Rev J Boyle leads St Marys Catholic Church with Christmas Eve Midnight Mass. St Marys Choir directed by Ruth Haugenburg. Christmas Day Masses at 8:00 and 9:00. Children’s choir led by Sister Patricia. Confessions Friday 10:00-11:30, 3:00-5:30, 7:00-8:30. Saturday 10:00-11:30 and 3:00-6:00.
Ramblers win 54 to 53 in overtime against North Central of Manly to lead conference. Court action featured a tight final period with dramatic scoring.
Jerry Caldwell, stationed on Okinawa, qualified for the expert marksmanship badge during .30 caliber carbine range firing. A confinement specialist in the United States Midwest Police Group, Caldwell joined the Army in 1956 and arrived in Okinawa in March 1959. His wife Nancy and mother Mrs. Virginia Harris reside in Greene.
A century of Civil War scholarship expands with a massive new volume Vere recounting military and political events. Bruce Catton, senior editor of American Heritage and Pulitzer winner, guides a fast moving narrative with 836 pictures by Mathew Brady sketches and unknown works. The Picture History of the Civil War represents a major investment of time and money, and aims to re tell the war’s story as the centennial nears in 1961.

Reports from Big Spirit Lake note walleyes eight to eleven pounds pulled through six inch ice. Yellow perch and silver bass respond to jigs and live bait. West Okoboji’s main basin remains open though perch bite in ice covered bays. Clear Lake ice is three to four inches with few shanties. On Mississippi near Lansing, panfish and bass and walleyes are being retrieved from open channels and backwater holes.

Greene’s girls had built big leads before losing to the visitors, while Tom Green fueled the win with key late free throws.
The State Conservation Commission reports an open mink and tusk season ends December 31, 1960. Badger skunk and other fur bearers may be trapped until January 10, 1960. Mild weather and little ice contribute to a better than average fur bearer season.
New residents Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Judas welcome a son born Tuesday morning December 26 at Cedar Valley hospital. The baby weighs 8 pounds 8 ounces. Mrs. Judas is the former Helen Jepsen.
