Burdette Hardy Retires After 34 Years At Elevator

Burdette Hardy, longtime manager of the Farmers Elevator, resigns effective January 2 after 34 years with the firm. Charles Lusher of Gilman will become the new elevator manager, returning to Greene as he and his wife purchase the Dr. D. T. Drees residence.

Bankraises Interest Rates on Savings Accounts

Officials of the First State Bank announce an increase effective January 1 1962. Time certificates will pay four percent per annum and savings accounts three percent. The change follows a Federal Reserve Board decision announced December 1 1961 allowing banks to pay the higher rates. Interest is guaranteed.

Cub Scouts Hold Christmas Party and Pack Meet

The Cub Scouts held their Christmas party and pack meeting Wednesday at the elementary school with about 68 boys and parents. Den mothers Mesdames Wilbur Klassi Florian Rutz Lewis Majewski and Donald Lester led carols and the nativity scene under a Brotherhood and Freedom of Religion theme. A Christmas tree was decorated by dens as mothers received gifts from their sons. The group sent 15 dozen cookies to Clark Rest Home and 25 dozen to the Children's Home in Waverly.

Rites Set for Alta Beguelin 71

Alta Grace Beguelin died at Cedar Valley Hospital after an extended illness. Born February 18 1890 in Greene she studied at Valley City Normal School and UW Seattle. She taught 14 years in Seattle schools and served in the Episcopal Church PEO Library Board. Survived by husband Paul two brothers and a sister. Funeral Thursday 2:00 at First Presbyterian Church. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Williams Mortuary in charge.

Alfred D. Barnett age 71 died Tuesday evening December 12 in a Britt hospital after surgery. He was born October 8 1890 in Butler County to Walter and Florence Barnett. He married Carmen McDonald October 8 1918 in Trenton Missouri. He farmed near Greene all his life and is survived by son Max Britt. daughter Ruth Perisho Story City. nine grandchildren. brothers Herbert Greene and Scott Charles City. sisters Agnes Bragg Greene and Ray Allen Aredale. Wife Carmen died August 16 1961 and son Bob died November 4 1961. Funeral at Williams Mortuary Friday at 2:00 with Rev T J Devies officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Music Concert Is This Evening

The annual December music concert by the vocal and instrumental departments will be Wednesday, December 20 at 8 00 p m in the auditorium. The 70 piece concert band directed by Ray Hoitz and the 80 voice mixed chorus with 53 voice glee club directed by Glenda Landsgaard perform. Selections include American Youth Concerto Holiday Sleigh Ride and Salute to Duke. Sara Green solos on violin with Meditation from Thais. Eight flute players feature Beguine for Flutes. Plan Hike By Cub Scouts On December 28th

The Shell Rock River bridge at Greene will close to all vehicles from Christmas to New Year’s as Kehe Construction of Waverly straightens floor beams. Harold Holzschuh Charged With Assault

Harold Holzschuh of Greene was arrested by the Sheriff's Office in Allison on a charge of Assault and Battery. He pleaded guilty in Justice of Peace Court and was sentenced to thirty days in jail with twenty three days suspended for good behavior. The charge followed an investigation by Deputy Sheriff Marvin Barth stating Holzschuh allegedly returned intoxicated and assaulted his sixteen year old son.
