Burdette Hardy, longtime manager of the Farmers Elevator, resigns effective January 2 after 34 years with the firm. Charles Lusher of Gilman will become the new elevator manager, returning to Greene as he and his wife purchase the Dr. D. T. Drees residence.
Officials of the First State Bank announce an increase effective January 1 1962. Time certificates will pay four percent per annum and savings accounts three percent. The change follows a Federal Reserve Board decision announced December 1 1961 allowing banks to pay the higher rates. Interest is guaranteed.
The Cub Scouts held their Christmas party and pack meeting Wednesday at the elementary school with about 68 boys and parents. Den mothers Mesdames Wilbur Klassi Florian Rutz Lewis Majewski and Donald Lester led carols and the nativity scene under a Brotherhood and Freedom of Religion theme. A Christmas tree was decorated by dens as mothers received gifts from their sons. The group sent 15 dozen cookies to Clark Rest Home and 25 dozen to the Children's Home in Waverly.
Alta Grace Beguelin died at Cedar Valley Hospital after an extended illness. Born February 18 1890 in Greene she studied at Valley City Normal School and UW Seattle. She taught 14 years in Seattle schools and served in the Episcopal Church PEO Library Board. Survived by husband Paul two brothers and a sister. Funeral Thursday 2:00 at First Presbyterian Church. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Williams Mortuary in charge.
The annual Snowball dance will be held at the Greene Community School on Wednesday December 27 starting at 8 30. Junior high and high school students alumni and their guests are invited. The Dave Kent orchestra will provide the music.
John Dobel was discharged and returned home last Wednesday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City where he underwent surgery.
More than five hundred people attended McRoberts Appreciation Day at the implement on Saturday. Four hundred twelve guessed the dog weight. the correct weight was 232 pounds. Mrs Steere Jr. William Steere’s entry won the hog in the drawing.

Alfred D. Barnett age 71 died Tuesday evening December 12 in a Britt hospital after surgery. He was born October 8 1890 in Butler County to Walter and Florence Barnett. He married Carmen McDonald October 8 1918 in Trenton Missouri. He farmed near Greene all his life and is survived by son Max Britt. daughter Ruth Perisho Story City. nine grandchildren. brothers Herbert Greene and Scott Charles City. sisters Agnes Bragg Greene and Ray Allen Aredale. Wife Carmen died August 16 1961 and son Bob died November 4 1961. Funeral at Williams Mortuary Friday at 2:00 with Rev T J Devies officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Williams Mortuary in charge.
Classes will end early Friday at Greene Community School with buses departing at 3:00 p.m. Students will go home as scheduled. School will resume on Wednesday, January 8.
There will be no driver's license examiner in Allison on the next two Mondays December 25 and January 1. The examiner will be in Parkersburg on Saturday morning December 23.

The girls glee club presents a cantata on the birth of Christ with solos Vae Brinkman Judy Klunder and Gloria Day.
The Cub Scouts will hold a hike on Thursday December 28. They meet at the Scout rooms above ODralles at 9 30 a m. Each Cub brings eating utensils and food to cook for the noon meal. Bob Shultz and Gary Rottler are in charge.
The Shell Rock River bridge at Greene will close to all vehicles from Christmas to New Year’s as Kehe Construction of Waverly straightens floor beams. The site is currently rated dangerous for heavy loads. work will finish next spring with a two week deck replacement. Foot traffic allowed. detours for vehicles during closure.
Harold Holzschuh of Greene was arrested by the Sheriff's Office in Allison on a charge of Assault and Battery. He pleaded guilty in Justice of Peace Court and was sentenced to thirty days in jail with twenty three days suspended for good behavior. The charge followed an investigation by Deputy Sheriff Marvin Barth stating Holzschuh allegedly returned intoxicated and assaulted his sixteen year old son.
Calvin Kelly of Roach Farms Inc announces sales in Greene towns. Mr and Mrs Charles Lusher of Gilman bought the Dr D T Drees property. Mr and Mrs Drees purchased the Kenneth Knight residence, and the Knight family plans to move into the Harry Dilley residence.
Edward Thompson was taken to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Thursday for treatment.
The Christmas service and program at the Church of the Brethren are scheduled for Christmas Eve, December 24, with two sessions at 11:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Classes perform music and recitations led by teachers including Mrs. Howard Baisey, Mrs. Roscoe Wharton, and others, featuring choirs, solos, readings, and candlelighting.

I J Demes led Christmas Eve at St Peter's Lutheran Church on December 24 at 7 30 pm with a Glory of the Lord processional hymn and multiple readings by Dale Litterer and various classes. The service featured carols sung by children and choir, including O Come LIte Children and Hark the Herald Angels Sing, plus Christmas film The Bells of Christmas and the Nativity Scene.
Calvary Baptist Church pastor George S Knutson announces the annual Sunday School Christmas program at 7 30 p m Christmas Eve Sunday December 24. The Junior Department will recite drill and sing while Junior Hi and Senior Hi classes perform. A pageant titled The Meaning of Christmas will be shown with characters on Kadochrome slides and narration via tape.
