The local Future Farmers of America chapter awarded a purebred Yorkshire gilt to members after a vote by FFA members. Jim and Larry Gabe each pledged two gifts to be given next year to four of the next year's greenhands, drawn from the chapter sow awarded to Chuck Litterer last year.
Wartburg College presents Christmas at Wartburg with two programs in Knights Gymnasium. On December 15 at 8 pm, over 200 faculty and students will present the Christmas story. Chi Rho will hold candle lighting on December 16 at 7 30 p m. Attendance is a northeastern Iowa tradition, with Herb Engelbrecht coordinating.
Relatives and neighbors gathered at Mrs. Wilbur Wiegmanns former Greene area farm to harvest her corn and her landlord Melvin Dreiers crop. Wiegmann was killed in a May auto crash. Her sons David Galen and Paul now live in Allison with Mrs. Wiegmann.
The American Legion Auxiliary meets at the Veterans Club on Wednesday evening December 18 for the annual Christmas party for veterans and families. Auxiliary members should bring cookies and a gift for a child. those with children bring cookies and a gift for each child. Extra gifts go to an orphan's home or veteran's hospital. Hospitalized veterans select gifts for their own children. The business meeting is at 7 30 with the program starting at 8 00.
The Ramblers dropped games to Tripoli and Rockford while the Ramblerettes beat Tripoli and fell to Rockford. Ramblers 49 31 loss to Tripoli. Ramblerettes opened season with a 40 31 win over Tripoli. Next, Ramblers tied Rockford 46 40 then lost 48 40. upcoming double-headers listed for Friday and Tuesday at Marble Rock and St Ansgar.
The Greene Community School P T A met in the auditorium on Wednesday evening December 4. Mrs. James Drake led Christmas carols and Kathy Parks read a Christmas piece. Iowa State Teachers College will present Rumpelstiltskin on December 13 and 14 with all roles by college actors. Rev Warren Hoover of Preston Minnesota shared slides from his West Germany trip on Heifers for Relief comparing farms and feeding. The January meeting is moved to January 8 with program Healthy Children are Happy Children.
Mr. and Mrs. William C. Moon sold their Washington D C home and will stay at the Hillegas apartments in Greene this weekend. Their daughters Berniece Culbertson and Shirley Schwartz are expected next week for a holiday visit from Washington D C. Their grandchildren Stephanie Culbertson and Billy Schwartz live with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Curtis while attending Greene Community School. Mrs. Schwartz will return to Washington D C the first week in January where she serves as secretary for Congressman Tollefson. Mrs. Culbertson leaves January 15 for Rochester Minnesota to work as an anesthetist in a hospital.
Miss Doris Butler daughter of Mr and Mrs Garth Butler recently moved to Eugene Oregon from Waterloo where she resigned after four years as a nurse at Shoitz Memorial hospital. She now serves on the medical floor of Sacred Heart hospital in Eugene.
L P Lyman 63 longtime Cedar Rapids Grand hotel restaurant operator died Friday in a Veterans hospital West Los Angeles after six weeks illness. Survived by two sons Hubert G. Lyman Cedar Rapids and L P Lyman Jr Whittier Calif. Wife Esther Meek Greene died two years ago and a son J B Lyman was killed in China in World War II. Services held Rose Hill Chapel Whittier Monday December 9. Lyman also ran the movie theater in Greene years ago.
The Bennedette Wesleyan Methodist Church hosts a District Youth Rally on Thursday December 12 at 8 00 PM directed by Conference Youth President Al Fookes. The program features inspiring singing and instrumental numbers for all ages. Everyone is welcome.
Mrs. Rupert Fischer announced that the Greene Public Library Saturday story hour is discontinued for the rest of December. It will resume on Saturday January 4 from 1 15 to 2 pm.
Mary Elizabeth Barth born April 4 1868 in Wenneshick County died December 4 in Greene at 6 am aged 89 years 8 months. Survived by five children 29 grandchildren 60 great grandchildren 2 great great grandchildren one sister and one brother. Funeral at St Peters Lutheran Church Greene with Rev I J Devies. burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Willams Mortuary in charge.
The tenth Young Farmer meeting will be held in the Greene Community School this evening December 11 at 7 30 The eleventh Young Farmer meeting will be held on Wednesday December 18 at 7 30 The subject will be Reporting Income for Taxes A Young Farmers out of school are welcome to attend.
Technical Sergeant Donald Daiker and his wife and baby visit the Blair Moffett home through the holidays. Daiker has served ten years in the air force and is stationed at the dispensary of the National Air Force Base in Washington D C.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Sandgren Jr. of Lyle Minnesota shared their mission work plans for French Equatorial Africa during Calvary Baptist Church Sunday evening service. Mrs Sandgren taught six years in Grand Marais before attending Columbia Bible College. the couple and their three children will depart soon for Africa.
Eugene Lindaman of Aplington and Lloyd E. Lacey with Harry Ott of Greene earned national pork production honors in Butler County. Lindaman's record included 202 pigs from 18 sows, 11.22 pigs per litter and 1.19 pounds daily gain. Lacey and Ott received the County Championship and a personal plaque at the Champions Recognition Dinner on the Iowa State College Campus.
The youth groups of First Methodist Church First Presbyterian Church and Church of the Brethren meet at the Church of the Brethren on Sunday December 15 at 5 p m to go caroling. They will return to the church for refreshments afterward.
Engaged couple from Clarksille Mr. and Mrs. Fred Brinkman announce their daughter’s engagement to Nelson Bose of Cor dell Oklahoma son of Mrs Carl Bose Plans for the wedding are indefinite both are servers at Wartburg College in Waverly.
A Christmas Seal Sale netted 274.85 from a Monday night drive. Fern Stouffer appeals for timely contributions and urges families to call 128 for an envelope of seals. Proceeds fund health education tuberculin testing X ray programs and medical research.
New residents Mr and Mrs Dean Niehaus of Oelwein announce the birth of a daughter named Julie Lynn on Saturday December 7 at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. Mrs Niehaus is the former Carol Weichers daughter of Mr and Mrs John Weichers of Greene. This is the first girl in the Niehaus family in 36 years.
John G Mooberry 65 of Charles City died when his car struck a bridge two miles south of Roseville on December 4. He was returning home from Greene, reportedly asleep at the wheel. He operated Mooberry Cabins in Charles City and is survived by his wife, one son, two daughters, 14 grandchildren, and other relatives. Funeral services were held December 6 at Hauser Funeral Home and burial followed at Sunnyside Memory Gardens.
Dayton Township plans a December 18 meet at Wygle School to hear 4-H reports a council member’s report and Extension activities plus the election of a Dayton Township representative to the Butler County Extension Council for 1958 1959 Don Hagarty longtime Dayton official is noted as first chairman since 1955 and re elected each year 4 H members are urged to attend and report their activities with committees listed for nominations and secretary duties
The December 16 Adult Farmer meeting covers drylot and pasture hog farming at Greene Community School at 8:00 p.m. All adult farmers are invited. Dr N J War ale, Farm Safety Specialist from Iowa State College at Ames spoke at the December 9 meeting.
Keith Harris underwent eye surgery in Rochester Minnesota last Thursday morning. The procedure appears successful with no complications reported and Harris is expected to rest at home as advised by physicians.
Mrs C Ek Heyer of Sumner hosted the Turkish exchange student Bazraktar spending the month in the Heyer home. Also visiting were Senk ave Bazraktar and Nancy Kretzschmar of Waterloo who joined the gathering at the Clarence Kretzschmar residence from Sunday through Tuesday.
Funeral services for Mrs Emma Nixt were held at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Catholic Church in Greene with Rev P J Boyle officiating. Burial followed at St Mary's Cemetery in Greene. Nixt, born August 21 1885 on a farm near Marble Rock, was married in 1911 to Ave Nixt and spent most of her life on a Marble Rock area farm. She survived by four daughters, two brothers and three sisters, with numerous grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her husband and two sons preceded her in death.
The Fresbyterian Sunday School announces Christmas program practice on Saturdays December 14 and 21 at 1:00 PM. All participants are urged to attend promptly and be ready at the start.
John Tindall suffered a stroke Tuesday morning at the home of his son and daughter-in-law Mr and Mrs Ray Tindall near Aredale. He is reported to be as good as can be expected.
The Butler County Tuberculosis and Health Association has acquired the film Are You Positive and offers it free to groups and organizations. For use contact Gilbert Kruse of Allison, health education chairman of the county association.
Walter Kyle returned home from Cedar Valley hospital on Sunday after surgery.
