Steve Barnett starts MIT fellowship in nuclear science

Steven Dale Barnett son of Mrs Ira Barnett and a 1969 U S Air Force Academy graduate has begun graduate study at MIT as an AEC Special Fellow in Nuclear Science and Engineering. He is among 94 first year NSE and HP fellows nationwide with 69 NSE and 25 HP, selected from 630 NSE and 135 HP applicants.

Services Held For Archie N. DeFrance

Services were conducted Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo for Archie N. DeFrance 82 who died at home Tuesday Dec 2 of a heart attack. Born March 19 1887 in South Dakota he was a retired interior decorator who lived in Waterloo 12 years. He married Evelyn Anderson May 15 1915 at Lucan Minnesota. she died later. He married Rose Yaw May 20 1948 at Nashua. Surviving are his widow two stepdaughters a brother a half brother four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents his first wife and two brothers.

Schrag Exhibited Painting in Ton-toned Juried Show

Dennis Schrag of Greene exhibited one painting in Laurton s first Juried Art Show sponsored by the Junior Service League. The week long show, juried by Sam Olkinetzky, attracted 106 works. Purchase awards totaled 1700 with 300 for three Best of Show selections.

Free Movies and Santa Visit in Greene This Saturday

The Greene Jaycees sponsor free cartoon movies at Greene High School Auditorium on Saturdays December 13 and 20 at 1 30 p m. Santa will visit after the cartoons and hand out candy to children. A Turkey Drawing offers 31 turkeys each Saturday at Mel's TV with one turkey per family per drawing at 8 30 p m. New store hours run December 18 to 23 evenings. closes 5 p m on December 24.

Greene Iowa Post Office Postmaster Robert Curtis urges residents to include ZIP Codes and a return address on Christmas mail. He warns that unreadable addresses and missing return addresses send mail to dead letter branches, noting over 32 billion pieces were affected last year.

Army announces 1969 Christmas New Year leave policy

The U S Army Recruiting Command issued holiday leave rules for 1969 70. Enlistees joining between December 10 and 19 are processed at Omaha Des Moines or Sioux Falls exam stations then sent to reception stations and may take leave returning by January 5 1970 to start basic training. Those enlisting December 20 31 receive leave at exam stations and return January 5 for transfer.

Two Steers Killed In Accidents Wednesday

Two steers owned by Julius Huxsel of Charles City were killed after straying onto Highway 14 about one mile north of Roseville. At 6:30 a.m. Wednesday Patricia Ann Tefft of Greene struck one steer traveling north, and Goldie Garren of Floyd hit another traveling south. Tefft’s car sustained about $1,000 in damage. Garren’s $300. No injuries were reported for the occupants.

Cub Scouts Host X-mas Party December 17

Butler County Receives Federal Disaster Assistance

Butler County Auditor Vernon Q Larsen and the Board of Supervisors received a warrant for 4476.58 from the Iowa Civil Defense Office as a Federal Disaster Assistance Grant for damages to roads and bridges caused by the June 1968 floods. Greene Mayor William Ramker received 884.00 for damages to public-owned property in Greene from the Iowa Civil Defense Division. New Hartford had earlier received 351.00 for recovery from losses in the same June 1968 floods. The funds are provided under Public Law No 875, as amended, to help restore vital facilities and services in disaster areas.
