As we approach the 1970s the community should consider its future needs. A medical center and eight community buildings serving all ages are the most critical priorities. Greene progress depends on the efforts of progressive residents.
Mike Majewski son of Mr and Mrs Lewis Majewski is home on leave for ten days. He will report back to San Diego California on December 14.
Mr. and Mrs. John J. Henning welcome Wynona Jane born Saturday December 6 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. Weighing six pounds four and a half ounces, she is welcomed by sister Waneda Jean age 16 months. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Clikeman and Mr. and Mrs. John G. Henning.
Steven Dale Barnett son of Mrs Ira Barnett and a 1969 U S Air Force Academy graduate has begun graduate study at MIT as an AEC Special Fellow in Nuclear Science and Engineering. He is among 94 first year NSE and HP fellows nationwide with 69 NSE and 25 HP, selected from 630 NSE and 135 HP applicants.
Greene Rambler wrestling team falls 23 to 20 to Clear Lake after a close match. Lima Albrecht won at 103 pounds, Reid and Trees with decisions, Osier pinned Franton to score for Greene. Reserve squads also split, coach Jaffe looks to Dec 13 Calmar tourney and Dec 16 Newman trip for experience.
Services were conducted Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waterloo for Archie N. DeFrance 82 who died at home Tuesday Dec 2 of a heart attack. Born March 19 1887 in South Dakota he was a retired interior decorator who lived in Waterloo 12 years. He married Evelyn Anderson May 15 1915 at Lucan Minnesota. she died later. He married Rose Yaw May 20 1948 at Nashua. Surviving are his widow two stepdaughters a brother a half brother four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents his first wife and two brothers.
Butler County Special Education students present a Christmas program at the Allison Special Education Building on Wednesday evening December 17 at 8 00 p m A pageant The Traveler and other musical selections will be performed The public is cordially invited.
The High School presents its annual Christmas Concert in the auditorium next Wednesday at 7 45 p m featuring Stage Band Concert Band Brass Choir Woodwind Choir Mixed Chorus Boys Quartet Wind Song Society and several vocal solos with a mix of Christmas carols popular and patriotic selections. Music parents will serve refreshments and admission is free.
Round Grove Golf and Country Club hosts a New Year’s Eve dance with Earl Hunt and his band providing music. Members may buy limited tickets through December 23, then remaining tickets go to guests. For tickets contact Sam Sneed or Bill Astor.
Dennis Schrag of Greene exhibited one painting in Laurton s first Juried Art Show sponsored by the Junior Service League. The week long show, juried by Sam Olkinetzky, attracted 106 works. Purchase awards totaled 1700 with 300 for three Best of Show selections.
The Greene Jaycees sponsor free cartoon movies at Greene High School Auditorium on Saturdays December 13 and 20 at 1 30 p m. Santa will visit after the cartoons and hand out candy to children. A Turkey Drawing offers 31 turkeys each Saturday at Mel's TV with one turkey per family per drawing at 8 30 p m. New store hours run December 18 to 23 evenings. closes 5 p m on December 24.
Word has been received of the death of Rev John P Willms 83 of Monticello He was a former pastor of St Johns Lutheran Church at Wilmar serving there 20 years before moving to Monticello Services are set for 1:30 p m Friday December 12 at Wayne Lutheran Church in Monticello
The Junior High presents a Christmas concert this evening in the high school auditorium. Featured are the Junior High Concert Band, the Junior High chorus, and the 5th and 6th grade band, with Christmas readings and performances by the 7th grade Folk Group.
Eldon F. Peterson and Dean Ott among more than 10 000 attendees at the 41st Farmland Industries annual meeting in Kansas City Missouri held December 3 to 5. The regional cooperative manufactures feed petroleum and fertilizer and is owned by over 2 000 local cooperatives serving about half a million farmers and ranchers.
Greene Iowa Post Office Postmaster Robert Curtis urges residents to include ZIP Codes and a return address on Christmas mail. He warns that unreadable addresses and missing return addresses send mail to dead letter branches, noting over 32 billion pieces were affected last year.
The U S Army Recruiting Command issued holiday leave rules for 1969 70. Enlistees joining between December 10 and 19 are processed at Omaha Des Moines or Sioux Falls exam stations then sent to reception stations and may take leave returning by January 5 1970 to start basic training. Those enlisting December 20 31 receive leave at exam stations and return January 5 for transfer.
Marvin Chapman returned home on Monday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City where he had been a patient.

Neighbors gathered last Saturday to harvest about 15 acres of corn for Marvin Chapman. Helpers included Clarence and Ray Brinkman Kenny Rover Galen Miller Oscar Chapman Francis Beguelin Floyd Needham Melvin Brinkman Melvin Chapman Roger and Bob Schafer and Dean and Gary Debner. Women provided dinner and food. Lynne Debner babysat. The Farmer's Elevator of Are Dale supplied fuel.

Doug Trees of the Greene Ramblers, a two time state champ, captured the 118 pound title at the Northern Iowa Invitational in Cedar Falls. The North Iowa Area Community College wrestler won all five matches, including a fall, as eight college squads competed.

Barry Jon Landers infant son of Mr and Mrs Earl Landers was baptized Sunday December 7 at the Presbyterian Church in Greene with great grandfather Roy Pooley assisting Rev Donald K Welsh. A dinner followed at the parents home.
Last week bowling results show teams Farmer's Coop Jim's Standard S & N GMC Miller Real Estate and First State Bank competing with scores listed. High figures include Sam Sneed 227 205 620 and Fred Nordmeyer 240 599 with multiple 500s and 600s across players.
Nora Springs will host Riceville Friday night as both Rambler teams seek wins. The girls beat Nora Springs 84 to 50 last week with four players in double figures, led by Mary Stauffer. The boys posted an 89 to 43 victory behind Tom Needham’s 16 rebounds and Johnson’s 18 points. Both teams also mention potential closings and upcoming schedules against Riceville and Plainfield.
Two steers owned by Julius Huxsel of Charles City were killed after straying onto Highway 14 about one mile north of Roseville. At 6:30 a.m. Wednesday Patricia Ann Tefft of Greene struck one steer traveling north, and Goldie Garren of Floyd hit another traveling south. Tefft’s car sustained about $1,000 in damage. Garren’s $300. No injuries were reported for the occupants.
The Cub Scout Christmas party is set for Wednesday December 17 at 7 30 p m in the Elementary School. Each child attending should bring a 50 cent grab bag gift and each family a dozen cookies.
Twelve Butler County 4 H members joined a Chicago education tour from Friday to Sunday visiting the International Livestock Show Wax Museum Museum of Science and Industry Field Museum and the Prudential Building. They saw King of Hearts on stage and Funny Girl on screen. Chaperones were Mr and Mrs Harold E Wagner.
Bob Mead was taken to Mercy Hospital in Mason City on Monday for observation, and his condition was not disclosed.
Butler County Auditor Vernon Q Larsen and the Board of Supervisors received a warrant for 4476.58 from the Iowa Civil Defense Office as a Federal Disaster Assistance Grant for damages to roads and bridges caused by the June 1968 floods. Greene Mayor William Ramker received 884.00 for damages to public-owned property in Greene from the Iowa Civil Defense Division. New Hartford had earlier received 351.00 for recovery from losses in the same June 1968 floods. The funds are provided under Public Law No 875, as amended, to help restore vital facilities and services in disaster areas.
Mr and Mrs Paul Ruzicka of Dubuque announce the birth of a son on Sunday December 7. No name set yet. He will be welcomed by brothers Anthony and Matthew. Grandparents Emil Ruzicka of Greene and Mr and Mrs John Imhoff of Dubuque.
