The editor notes school has started and students look smarter. Election fever is slow for the primary but will quicken after ballots cast on September 6 are tallied. The inter-party contests end and the struggle for various offices begins between Republicans and Democrats.
Twenty six freshmen accepted honors program invitations at Wartburg College for superior students this year. Included is David W. Bone, son of Mr and Mrs Harrison Bone. About 50 sophomores and juniors continue in the program after meeting advancement requirements. The Honors Program Committee invited the new students based on high school rank and test scores. Freshmen will stay four years and graduate with honors designations after completing required work and colloquia.
John McWhirter of Allison announces Butler County July savings bonds sales for Series E and H total $61,042, lifting seven month cumulative to $518,176 at 63 percent of the goal. Statewide July sales reach $9,255,365 at 67 percent of the Towans quota, with Iowa leading the Midwest and nationwide at 64 percent.
Mr. Clinton Lockwood fell seriously ill on Saturday August 7 and was taken to Floyd County Memorial Hospital for observation and treatment. Mrs J F Strickler and Miss Merle Kahuda of Storm Lake and Mrs Margaret Booth of Story City have come to be with the family.
Ferrol Senne daughter of Mr and Mrs Martin Senne is among the graduating class of Allen Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. She received her diploma at commencement exercises held Friday evening at West High School in Waterloo. Attending were Mr and Mrs Martin C Senne, Margaret and Joanne of Greene and Dean B Miller. They later had dinner at the Colony Club.
New resident couple Mr and Mrs William Nordmeyer welcome daughter Lynne Delight born Sunday August 28 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City. She weighs 8 pounds 8% ounces and joins sisters Kathy and Julie. Grandparents are Robert Nordmeyer Sr Lyle Shultz and spouses.
Robert Orval Kingery died in an auto crash in California on his 19th birthday anniversary. Born August 26, 1947 near Bristow, he later moved to Greene County and attended Greene Community Schools. He served in the Navy, stationed at San Diego and Barbers Point, Hawaii, and served aboard the U S S Canberra. Survived by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, grandmother, and 12 nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Church of the Brethren with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Mr and Mrs Edward Hardman of Peoria Illinois welcomed a daughter born Wednesday August 24 weighing 8 pounds Erin is the couple’s first girl and they already have two sons Mark and Steven Royal Hardman is the paternal grandfather.
The Post Office will be closed on Labor Day September 5 1966 with service counters closed and no rural delivery. Mail will be received dispatched and distributed as on any other holiday.
Max Dougherty announces the 1966 Rambler squad will have about 67 members including eleven returning lettermen. Key returnees are Doug Rutfridge Clark Allen Craig Cheney Lynn Gabe Mike Behnke Tom Johnson Don Wunsch Tom M Hagarty John Barth Jeff Drake and Larry Weichers. Al Len, a 3 year veteran, shifts to bolster the line while Hagarty and Barth aim to anchor the backfield. Practices under lights precede the September 9 home opener against Osage as fans anticipate strong support.
Roy Stolen of Peoples Gas and Don Elgin of Goerdt Construction test distribution lines on Greene's east riverfront to verify a 100 pounds per square inch pressure hold for 48 hours. The test ensures safety of the distribution system for company and residents.
Bill Christensen of Hampton began duties as grocery manager at the B & W Fine Food Store in Greene on Monday. He has six years with B & W stores in Grimes, Clarion, and Hampton. The Christensens moved to the former Dr. D. T. Drees home on North First Street with son Todd, 4. Mrs. Christensen is Arleutene Stewart of Hampton. He belongs to the Methodist Church in Hampton and to the Quarterback Club, Lion's Club, Jaycees, and Grimes fire department volunteer unit. he also ran Little League baseball for five years.
About five hundred fifty persons attended the Greene Sportsman’s Club 18th annual fish fry last Friday evening. Winners of three door prizes donated by the club were Mrs. Alfred Lampman Marble Rock third prize a wild bird feeder Mrs. Claire Kepple Greene second prize a 30 cup coffee maker and Albert Wolff Charles City first prize a transistor radio. Over half of attendees received a prize donated by a local business or professional man or a manufacturer.
Barbara Ray daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilson Ray was capped in ceremonies at St Anthony Hospital School of Nursing in Oklahoma City Oklahoma on Friday The CAP signifies the second milestone in nursing training as the student moves from freshman to junior year with enhanced theory bedside clinical learning and training.
Mr and Mrs Robert Barth announce the birth of a daughter Denise Annette on Tuesday at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City. The baby weighed 8 pounds 12 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Claire Kepple and Mr and Mrs Darrel Barth.
Visiting Here Spec. 4 and Mrs. Jerry Petz of South Hampton Virginia arrived Friday at the home of Mrs. Petznick’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Wagoner. He has been in the Army since September 1965, trained at Fort Leonard Wood and Fort Eustis. After a ten day leave he will return to Fort Eustis and ship to Viet Nam as a marine engineer aboard an LCM boat. His wife Marlys will stay in Greene with her parents.
Nomination papers for the Greene Community School board election are due by Friday noon September 2. Two three year terms on the board and a two year treasurer term from July 1 1967 to June 30 1969 will be decided September 12 at the high school gym lobby polls open 12 noon to 7 pm. Incumbents Schafer Van Eschen and Barth eligible for reelection. nominations require 10 electors’ signatures and must be filed with Betty Brunsma.
The Butler Bremer DHIA will hold a potluck picnic on September 5, 1966, at Henry Woods State Park south of Clarksville, per President Kenneth Rodman. All members and prospective members are urged to attend. Serving starts at 12:00 noon. After the meal a short association report and kids games will follow. Ice cream and milk will be furnished.

The Greene Community Schools report 764 pupils for 1966-67, up 24 from last year. High school total 275 with senior 59 junior 75 and others. Junior high enrolls 1120 with 68 eighth grade and 52 seventh. Elementary grades total 369 with 60 in kindergarten and 60 in first grade.
Commissioner Gene L. Needles issued a statewide appeal urging increased driver caution as Iowa youngsters return to school. He cited watch for stop signs and signals, obey school speed zones, and be vigilant at curbs and intersections for children likely to step into streets. About 760,000 children will be crossing roads, including 62,000 kindergartners, requiring drivers to be extra patient and prepared for unexpected behavior near streets or highways.
Dick Ray 73 died early Wednesday at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital after being admitted yesterday Survivors include two daughters Mrs Merlin Schrock of Indio California and Mrs Robert McGregor of Manson and two sons Charles of Greene and Lester of New Hampton Funeral services are pending at Reid's Funeral Chapel in Greene.
William Senne was discharged and returned home Thursday after a stay at St Josephs Mercy Hospital in Waverly.

High scores reach 544 by Bob Curtis and 534 by Mike Wiegmen. other top performances include Walter Gahe 541 and Charles Stark weather 412 across various divisions. Tuesday leagues showcase Ferns Bowlerettes and Alley Cat League with high marks such as Dorothy Fischer 205 and Irene Rover 515 series.
In Butler County the lone contest is for third district supervisor with Harold Voss John Stout Floyd Card Ben DeBerg and others on the ballots Republicans unopposed for county offices include Victor Woodley Robert Klunder and Craig Roelfs. The statewide ballot lists Democratic and Republican nominees for U S Senate governor lieutenant governor secretary of state and attorney general with incumbents facing opposition in some races. The 1966 primary date moved to September 6 with polls open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time.
The final Greene Buck drawing was held Saturday evening. Receivers included Wendell Davis Mrs Sam Crooks Grace Majewski and Mrs Galen Gates $20 each. Mrs Fred Feldman Merlin Schrage each $10 and Walter Hemmerick $5.
H C Engelbrecht Development Representative of Lutheran Social Service of Iowa will address the AL CCW general meeting Thursday September 8 at 8:00 p m at St Peters Lutheran church. Preceding business at 7:30 p m. Engelbrecht has held roles in education church and civic work plus Scouting. He earned BA and MA at State University of Iowa and taught in Belmond before becoming superintendent in Nevada. He served Wartburg College as Public Relations Director and later Business Manager. In 1962 he joined Lutheran Children's Home in Waverly as Development Director and since August 1 1966 with Lutheran Social Service of Iowa, headquartered Des Moines with branches in Mason City Waterloo Iowa City and Sioux City. He has been active in The American Lutheran Church National Lutheran Council The Brotherhood and serves on the Iowa Synod Executive Committee. Public invited.
Mrs Eldon Peterson underwent surgery on Monday morning at Lutheran Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Her condition and details were not disclosed, with hospital officials providing no further information.
Board president Francis Brink reports Farmers Inc Cooperative Society was represented at the annual Directors Clinic in Des Moines on Tuesday August 23. The one day meeting sponsored by the Farmers Grain Dealers Association drew over 500 directors of farmer owned cooperatives, along with their wives and families. J Maynard Bruce attended from the local cooperative.
Wilmar Lutheran hosts a Thursday supper with serving starting at 4 30 p m on September 1. St John s United Church of Christ east of Greene invites a church supper on September 8 with serving to follow.
