A county tour highlights the scope of road construction and maintenance in Butler County, with annual costs near one million dollars. Overflows replace bridges to handle streams, cutting costs to about one tenth, freeing funds for other work. Ted Hammel earns this week’s bouquet for flowers near Corner Dress Shop and Teeters Jewelry.
The Allison Cats swept three games to claim the state amateur baseball title at Osage and advance to the Great Plains Regional Tourney in Dyersville. Brent Prange pitched, Ken Sutton delivered a standout bat, and Sutton led a 10 for 12 pace overall with two other Greene players contributing. The team faces host Dyersville next Saturday with a double elimination format and prior matches pitting North and South Dakota champions.
Mr and Mrs Gerald Stephen and their children returned home Saturday after a two weeks vacation through the Southwest. They visited the Frontier Center in Oklahoma City and Six Flags Over Texas between Dallas and Fort Worth. The Stephensons also called on friends in Texas and the Ozarks during the journey.
Head coach Jack Sandy announces 45 boys on varsity football with twice daily practices. Returning lettermen include seniors Bill Thompson Tom Teeple Daren Krull Tim Bramer Douglas Jewell Dan Wihlin Jim Anthony along with junior lettermen Mark Backer Donn Schafer Roger Backer John Mead Merlin Schuknecht Steve Barnett Bruce Fischer Steve Clapham Ronald Stewart Mark Ott Roger Weichers. Newcomers Jim Curtis Jim Kingery sophomores Darwin Ramker Jim Drake Bill Walker and additions Norman Mielke and Milo Muhlenbruck join the staff as end coach and freshmen workouts continue.
K R Rowles, county superintendent for Bremer, Butler and Franklin counties, announces that the hiring of special education personnel has been completed with cooperation from the State Department of Public Instruction. David McMillan will serve as Director of Special Education for the three counties, moving from Vocational Rehabilitation in Waterloo to assume duties September 3. McMillan replaces Paul Binney, who resigned to pursue a two year doctoral scholarship. Two school psychologists, Donald Salisbury and John Byrne, join the trio, both starting September 3. Salisbury remains with Vocational Rehabilitation in Waterloo, Byrne trains at Omaha University. Wayne Koenen, previously a school psychologist in Bremer and Butler counties, resigns to take a similar post in the Davenport Public Schools.
Lloyd Baker, 47, of Mason City and Jasper Kreins, 77, of Dumont, were arrested by Deputy Sheriff Marvin Barth on a county road near Bristow on Sunday afternoon and charged with intoxication on a public road. Kreins paid a $15 fine and Baker was sentenced to fifteen days in the county jail after appearing in Dean Wiegmann's Court in Allison.
Jerry Fischer son of Mr and Mrs Wayne Fischer sustained a fractured left wrist in a football scrimmage during practice Monday morning. He will miss from two to four weeks of action.
Stanley Shook of Superior Wisconsin sustained injuries to both legs when struck by a car after stepping into the street between two parked cars. Three bones were broken in one ankle and the other leg required twenty stitches. He underwent bone surgery and will remain in St Joseph Hospital about ten days.
Master Sergeant Charles E. Truex, son of Mrs Pearl Truex of Greene, part of the Air Force team that launched a Titan IT ICBAI at Cape Canaveral on August 21. The launch ends a year of training with Strategic Air Command, the Martin Company, and the 6555th Aerospace Test Wing, qualifying them to join Blue Suit crews for future Titan tests on the Atlantic Missile Range.
Helen Frances Ritter Brown 89 died August 22 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after surgery. She was born November 12 1873 at Marble Rock daughter of Fiza and Frances Elly Ritter. Married Edward L. Brown October 1 1893 at Greene and they farmed in Butler County. Survived by son Leo of Charles City daughter Mrs Louis Ramblier of Greene ten grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. Funeral Saturday 2:00 at Reid's Funeral Chapel Greene with Rev George Knutson. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery.
Jean Evelyn Sturdy of Sturt evant Wisconsin, daughter of Rev and Mrs G F Butler, was granted a Bachelor of Arts in General Science at the August 7 graduation ceremony.

Islinda Sue Fesic daughter of Mr and Mrs Del W Foster of Niceville Florida was baptized at the First Presbyterian worship Sunday morning August 25 at the Nelmar Foster home. A dinner followed the service in honor of Islinda Sue with grandparents Mr and Mrs L C Foster and Mrs Verle Townsley among guests including J Hirltz of Rudd and Lloyd Foster Townsley.
Mrs. Joe Erie was taken to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City last week for treatment. The report notes she is undergoing care at the facility, with details limited in the available text.

Mrs S W Downs came home last week from St Josephs Mercy Hospital Mason City after cataract removal. Mrs Lottie Kingery returned home Thursday from Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City where she was a surgical patient. Mrs Ben Broadston was temporarily released from University Hospitals Town City and recuperating at her son’s Cedar Rapids home with a pending return for a check up. Mail should be addressed in care of G A Broadston Cedar Rapids.
Greene stores will be closed next Monday September 2 in observance of Labor Day.
Charles Leeplee won the Men's City Golf Tournament beating Herman Stubbe and Harry O Harrow of Charles City. In the consolation, Charles City defeated Larry Finnell of Greene to claim the consolation championship.
The Greene Sportsman's Club will host an annual Fish Fry at the high school auditorium next Friday evening August 30. Serving starts at 6:20 p.m. Tickets are all you can eat with walleyes fries rolls ice cream and coffee or milk. Local merchants and professionals have donated prizes to be drawn at the close. many prizes are on display in Curtis Hardware window. New residents Mr and Mrs Paul Drahos of Cedar Rapids welcomed a daughter Lisa Jane born August 22 weighing 6 pounds 15 ounces. Mrs Drahos is the former Jeanene Jewell, daughter of Ruth Jewell. Sp4 and Mrs Robert L Morrow of Frankfurt Germany welcomed a son Lee born August 41 weighing pounds 15% ounces. Mrs Morrow is the former Lois Brockway of Greene.
A Labor Day dance will be held at the Country Club on Saturday evening with music by The Esquires. Organizers include Andrew Reid, Robert Neal, Steve Brandt, Carl Herenga, Dean Oti, and Joan Van Eschen. A noon pot luck is hosted by Hobvert Mead, Gene Nettleton, Don Lester, Iale Manson, and Ben McGee. The annual mixed two ball foursome tournament is set for 1:30 PM.
Clarence Riebhoft, 62, died suddenly of a heart attack Friday afternoon in Algona. He was survived by his wife, three daughters, one son, and several grandchildren. The funeral was set for Monday afternoon at the Good Hope Methodist Church in Ai-208.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars organization 18 sponsors a Donkey Ball Game Thursday evening August 29 at the local athletic field. The program starts at 7 30 p m with five to seven innings and about an hour and a half. All players ride donkeys except the pitcher and catcher. Both teams consist of local boys.
Rev. George S. Knut and Mrs. Knut left for Dusty Washington on Monday to attend the funeral of sister-in-law Mrs. Carl S. Knutson who died early Monday. The funeral is set for Thursday. Rev. Carl S. Knutson serves as pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Dusty.
Greene Community School reveals staff for September start. Superintendent J Tatum and secretary Betty Brunsma head the board. Evelyn Butler is school nurse. New teachers include Chaurlene Person, Norman Mielke, Ronald Moen, Mile Muhlenoruck, Karen Petersen, Deems Ahlf, Iva Ernst, Kay Nordmeyer, Annette Burgess Shultz, Judein Wiens, Gertrude Pribbenow, Helene Boller, Leavonnye Beeker, and others. High school faculty also listed with coaches and administrators. support staff and bus routes noted.
Greene Fire Department was called to the Norman Klein farm east of Greene Wednesday evening to battle a blaze in a crib. The fire of unknown origin destroyed the crib and a quantity of corn and two tractors. The building housed the equipment and was awakened before midnight by the alarm. Fire crews remained on scene until about 4:00 AM Thursday.
An Aries girl from Alison won the bicrcle and Rolyna Majewski of Greene won the pony at the drawings on Friday afternoon and evening and on Saturday Alan Wefel won the pony and Mary Rottler won the bicrcle. Forty five youngsters participated in the Pet and Doll parade on Friday afternoon. Jeanette Astor, Frankie Armstrong and Bob Weyand won first, second and third in group one. Chas and Keven Jewell placed first in group two with Marcelo Behnke and Ingred Ennen placing second and third. Steven Schuknecht won over those in group three with Marian Shultz in second place and Paul ette and Jean Shultz in third place. The final Mad Money drawing was held Saturday evening with Grace Majewski and Gertie Marsh winning $25.00 each.
