The editor critiques race riots in major cities as proof small towns enjoy calmer summers. He proposes removing TV reruns and adding better programming to summer schedules and urges Congress to reward initiative over indolence.
First Lieutenant Ted Boller departed last week for Wurzburg Germany where he will be stationed for three years. He spent the summer at an aircraft controllers school in Mississippi and stayed with his parents Mr and Mrs Carlton Boller.
Four year old Heidi Meyer daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward Meyer received an emergency appendectomy on Friday at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Twenty nine teachers from high schools and colleges participate in Iowa State University summer research programs funded by the National Science Foundation. Ten weeks of independent study or team research explore biology chemistry engineering and physics with stipends and credits. Albert Tinderholt joins Dr Gordon Danielson in the physics track.
Robert Teeple of Teeple Service Station in Greene received a special award from The Gates Rubber Company for exceptional customer service. The plaque includes two uncirculated silver dollars two Kennedy half dollars and a commemorative coin set in an automotive engine design. Gates sponsors a nationwide contest now in its 35th year featuring Mystery Cars that reward staff who identify worn belts and offer replacements.
The NIAD area shows a 22.7 percent drop in the number of commercial farms from 1954 to 1964. Farms earning $10,000 or more rose 27.4 percent, while those earning $5,000–$10,000 fell 53.6 percent and under $5,000 dropped 60.0 percent. Hancock County led with 77.3 percent above $10,000. Wright County reached 82.5 percent in that category. Other counties ranged from Franklin 76.6 to Worth 53.5 percent. The 1964 Census shows NIAD at 66 percent of farms with $10,000+ in annual sales and 12 percent below $5,000.
Mr and Mrs Faber Miller of Cedar Rapids announce the birth of their son on August 17 at a Cedar Rapids hospital. The baby weighs 8 pounds 12 ounces and is named Fabher William. Three sisters welcomed him home. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Stanley Roose Sr of Bristow and Mrs Gladys Miller of Greene.

County Superintendent A Mier announces start dates for special education: Trainable Class in Hampton begins Tuesday Sep 5 and Educable Classes start Thursday Aug 31 at Allison. Registration for all students is Wednesday Aug 30 from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM at the Allison building with fees for books supplies 5 dollars, hot lunches 30 to 35 cents, special milk 2 cents, and insurance 2.50 to 3.50 dollars.
Winners in the Lloyd County Junior Achievement Show Hog Carcass Contest were announced after placings and cutout data arrived from Hormel Packing Company in Austin Minnesota. Hogs in the individual market barrow class were judged on the hoof at the Achievement Show and again on the rail after slaughter at the Hormel plant. Dennis Ratcher and James Meek of Greene placed fifth and sixth.
Merle and Ethel Krueger of Greene sue in Butler County District Court at Allison for 3900 against Esther Sellers. They claim Mrs Sellers hired Dale Hardy to remove an apple tree on May 29, without their consent, seeking damages for stump removal, seedling costs, lost wood and apples for ten years, tree shade and fragrance, and new tree costs. Mrs Sellers countersues for 250, alleging Kruegers parked a rendering truck that caused foul odors to drift onto her property.
The Women's City Bowling Association will meet at El-Bar Lanes on Tuesday evening August 29 at 7 30 p m all women bowlers urged to attend. Town and Country Friday Bowling League meets at El-Bar Lanes Friday August 25 at 1 30 p m start bowling September 1 at 1 30 p m.
Mr and Mrs Duane Schafer of Waterloo announce a daughter born Thursday August 17 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Jacqueline Rae weighs 6 pounds 13 4 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Howard Boesen of Waterloo and Mr and Mrs Otto Schafer of Greene.
Luther College Nordic Choir recalls a 39 day northern Europe tour this summer with three weeks in Norway and time in West and East Germany. Members Don Devies Judy Snell and William Thompson joined the trip which included East Berlin and the North Cape. The group returned July 5 and noted the political lesson learned.
A large farm machinery exhibit is set for the 1967 National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo Iowa running September 23 to October 1. Full line and short line manufacturers will display hundreds of equipment items. The show includes antique tractors and cars from Antique Acres and Cedar Valley Antique Car Club in a west of the cattle barns display. A new model home and additional dairy, livestock, and farm product exhibits will accompany the machinery displays.
The Greene Sportsman's Club hosts its annual fish fry Friday at 6 30 p m in the high school auditorium. Walleyes fries cole slaw rolls ice cream and coffee or milk are on the menu with tickets sold as all you can eat. Door prizes will be awarded and hundreds of prizes have been donated by local merchants and sporting goods firms. Tickets are limited and available from Greene businesses or club members.
Barbara Krueger three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Merle Krueger is a patient at University Hospital Iowa City. She will undergo surgery within the next few days. Her address is C 41 University Hospital Iowa City Iowa.
The State Service for Crippled Children will hold diagnostic clinics in Oelwein on September 7 at First Presbyterian Church and in Charles City on September 8 at St. John Lutheran Church. Eligible patients under 21 with chronic conditions are referred by doctors or dentists, and examinations are free.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Sutten and family returned home Monday after a ten day vacation largely at Birch Lake Minnesota. They were joined by his parents Mr and Mrs Bill Sutten of Grinnell his parents in law Mr and Mrs C H Schwiebert and Jim of Brooklyn and Mr and Mrs John Schwiebert and family of Grinnell.
Returned home to Peoria Illinois last week after a vacation with Amy Bellomy and her grandparents Mr. and Mrs Kaiser in Greene and with Mr. and Mrs Monroe Bellomy in Mason City.
The American Red Cross launches the Ditty Bag project with 1400 chapters aiding U S servicemen in South Vietnam. Butler County Chapter pledges 50 bags at $3 each, seeks contributions to meet a nationwide goal of 160000 bags. Bags contain pens paper envelopes toothbrush holders and more. shipped via Black Hawk County handling. donations to Mrs. Harry E Hampel are requested.
NFO members from Greene Floyd and nearby areas attended the Des Moines gathering at Veterans Memorial Auditorium. The crowd of over 35,000 approved action to empower the National Board to prepare for an all commodity holding action and heard plans for an NFO Grain Bank to support minimum prices for corn soybeans and wheat.
Dick Witwer underwent surgery on August 8 and August 16 at University Hospital in Iowa City. He is reported to be getting along fine and expects to be released from the hospital this weekend.
Miss Gloria Day, senior in Houghton College Music Department, travels to New York and back to Houghton for a visit. Myr. Raymond Barnett and Miss Alice Barnett accompany her. En route, they attend Kathleen Freiheit’s wedding at Laotto Indiana where Gloria serves as bridesmaid. The Freiheit family formerly lived in Aredale where Reverend F L Freiheit pastored.
Butler County CROP canvass begins August 28 with donations of corn or soybeans and cash accepted. Farmers may grazed diverted acres starting September 1 to count toward the $4,000 campaign goal. Extra pasture granted for 1967 feed grain participants. grazing excludes hay or silage.
The Iowa Conservation Commission announced 1967 bow and arrow deer licenses available from Sept 15 to Nov 30. Bow hunting runs Sept 30 to Nov 30 with broad head arrows allowed and hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset. Landowners and tenants may obtain two licenses each, issued to the owner or tenant and to a spouse or child. Gun deer licenses total 22,000 with six-zone dates set for early December. further applications to be announced.

Nine grade Girl Scouts completed a weeklong trip touring Dubuque Galena Grant's home and Chicago highlights including the Museum of Science and Industry and Marshall Field. They met 147 Italian Boy Scouts from Idaho World Jamboree, saw Hawaii at the Bismarck Theatre, camped at Lake Geneva and Baraboo, visited the Circus Museum, Upper Wisconsin Dells, Effigy Mounds, and Fort Atkinson en route home.
Miss Emma Montgomery who spent four weeks at St Joseph Mercy Hospital Waverly for injuries from a car accident has been released. She is now at Charles City Chautauqua Rest Home for a couple of weeks as a continuing patient care update.
The Butler County 4-H live stock judging team placed fifth at the North Iowa Fair contest. Members include Brian Kruse Greene Mike Gilbert Clarksville Bruce Lindaman Ap llington and Kenneth Alberts Alllison. Kruse was seventh high individual and Gilbert tenth. Franklin County 4-H won the contest.
The Floyd County Fairgrounds hosted the 1967 Agriculture and Industry Days livestock sale. A total of 437 head sold with hogs at 22.45 per cwt on 128 head, baby beef at 26.59 per cwt on 186 head, and junior feeders at 26.25 per cwt on 25 head. High hog price 24.25 per cwt paid to a bill of Charles City, lambs top at 27.75 per cwt to Joanne Frankenfield, and beef top at 29.25 per cwt for Jim Howe of Rockford. Auctioneers were Clarence Prange, Chuck Thorson, and Clarence Meyers of Charles City.
