Vandals entered the Greene Cafe Thursday night through a rear window and took about $20 in change. They also broke into Dr J P Hoben’s veterinary office through the back door, with nothing reported missing. Butler County authorities are investigating.
A daughter arrived Thursday August 10 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City weighing 8 pounds 5 1/2 ounces. She is named Brenda Jo and welcomed by sister Monica age 3. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Francis Grush of Keswick Iowa.
Charles Fries 81 of Waterloo died Sunday at St. Francis Hospital Waterloo from emphysema. Born October 5 1885 in Elizabeth Illinois to Charles Fries and wife. Survived by niece Gladys Muller Greene and nephew Dr. Dewey Lambert Des Moines. Funeral services today at 1 30 PM at O Keefe Funeral Home Waterloo with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery Greene around 3 PM.
Jean Ganske won the Ladies City Handicap Tournament at Round Grove Golf and Country Club last Wednesday with 86 for 18 holes. Mary Rottler was runner up in the championship flight with 95 among 22 entrants. Beth Drakle led first flight with 99, Mary Schroeder 101 second. Ethel Backer 100 and Sadie Davis 110 led second flight. Cleo Mead had longest drive on number one, Bonnie Knapp won the flag hole, and Sadie Davis earned a special prize for the most sixes. A catered luncheon for 35 women followed at noon.
The Soil Conservation District will conduct a tour of current soil conservation projects on Tuesday August 22. Thaie Hogue Work Unit Conservationist will lead the tour designed for the commissioners and assistants of the Soil Conservation District and the ASCS Committee to review the season's accomplishments. Open to all interested in soil conservation.
Robert Fenneman bought a 140 acre farm identified as the Mrs. Anna Martzahn estate farm not the Augusta Martzahn farm. He will take possession on March 1, 1968.
Funeral services for John Joseph Chukker 80 were held at St. Marys Catholic Church Worthington Minnesota. He died August 10 at Worthington Hospital. Born July 11 1887 at West Bend he married Alta Farnum over 55 years ago. A Rock Island Railroad depot agent in West Branch Wellsburg Greene and Worthington he retired after more than 50 years. Survivors include three sons Gerald Myron and Don a daughter Donna deceased two grandsons Kenneth and Rodney and a granddaughter Janice Bruns. Burial at Worthington Cemetery. Several Greene residents attended the service.
Sally Clikeman underwent ear surgery on Tuesday August 8 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo and returned home on Sunday.
Bruce Cheney gave a fifty five minute vocal recital at the Greene High School auditorium with Jane Birkhead at the piano. Selections included Barber of Seville Handel's Messiah and West Side Story. A standing ovation followed as Cheney departs Wednesday for New York to pursue further studies.
Fractured hip case involving Mrs. Alice Dolan admitted to Davenport hospital. She underwent surgery last Wednesday to replace the ball in the hip socket. Cards may be sent to 1229 Perry Street Davenport Iowa 52803.
Fred Hauser 82 retired farmer south of Clarksville passed away Friday morning at his home from complications after a stroke. He was born October 18, 1884 and lived in Fremont Township his entire life. He married Amelia Litterer on February 25, 1915. Survived by wife Amelia four sons Leonard Eldon Paul all of Clarksville Theophill of Nashua two daughters Mrs Paul Stille of Nashua Mrs Edwin Stirm of Charles City a brother August of Greene and a sister Mrs Freda Quade of Charles City and twenty grandchildren. Funeral service Tuesday at 2:00 PM at St. John's United Church of Christ near Nashua officiated by Rev. Arthur Kruetzmann. Burial in church cemetery.
In Hospital Richard Menken was moved by ambulance to the Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Monday morning after suffering a heart attack.
The American Cancer Society booth at the Butler County Fair reported 334 registrations over four days with many attendees taking pamphlets on cancer types. Photographed left to right are Mrs. Lowell Maxson James Barlow and Mrs. Larry Schwab. Prize winners for The Climate is Hope were Claire Arhart Jr Gertie Kluiter Becky Kght and George Reiners. The memorial book listing county cancer deaths was displayed at the booth.
Mrs Genevieve Tiemens and Harvey Tiemens were called to Oolwein on Saturday to pick up Duane Tiemens and his family after a car crash. No one was injured. The other driver was hospitalized then released. The Tiemenses returned to Manchester and Greene. Duane and his family were en route to Greene for his high school reunion in Charles City.
Rambler head coach William Garner announced a Friday August 18 meeting at 8:00 a.m. at the Community School for physicals, insurance, and equipment checks. First practice is Monday August 21 from 7:30 to 9:20 a.m. and 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Call 23 5542 if you cannot attend. new players still welcome.

Conrad Wiegmann 76 of Bristow died Sunday at home. Born August 15 1890 in Wilmar to Conrad and wife, he married Sarah Wessels. Survived by wife and numerous children, siblings, and grandchildren. Funeral 1:30 PM Wednesday at St John Lutheran Wilmar. burial Allison Cemetery.
Randy DeVries a 12 year old boy and son of Ray DeVries had an emergency appendectomy Saturday evening at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
The September term of the Butler County District Court will convene on September 7 with Judge John F. Stone of Mason City presiding. The regular election of the Greene Community School District Board of Education will be held September 11, 1967 from 12 noon to 7 p.m. at the high school gym lobby. One seat currently held by Galen Miller is up for reelection. Nomination papers may be circulated by qualified voters and filed with Betty Brunsma between August 12 and September 1 noon to appear on the ballot.
Mr and Mrs Darrell Buss of Greene welcomed a baby boy named Timothy Lee Buss born Monday August 7 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Waverly. The infant weighed 3 pounds 14.75 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Wilbur Martzahn of Greene and Mr and Mrs Robert Lahr of Shell Rock.
Mary Lou Murphy of Greene earned a Master of Art Degree in education at Clarke College Dubuque as part of the first group to receive the degree. She received the Experienced Teacher Fellowship from the U S Office of Education for graduate work in reading and will return to Greene Community Schools to teach second grade. She previously earned a bachelor's degree at Northwest Missouri State College and has taught in Hampton Nora Springs and Greene. Murphy also appears on Funtime with Mary Lou on KGLO TV in Mason City Iowa.
Greene Community Schools begin the 1967-68 term Monday August 28 with full days. Labor Day is Sept 4. New pupils and their parents should meet principals at the high school or elementary building to register. Bus routes and fees for books and lunches are announced.

A group of 42 members from Farmer's Incorporated Cooperative Society traveled by chartered bus on a four day co op tour through Missouri and Kansas. They visited Trimble Farmland demonstration farm Kansas City Farmland Industries School Co op Feed Mill Lawrence nitrogen plant Coffeyville ammonium phosphate Joplin Ammonium Plant Farmland HQ and Starlight Theatre Kansas City returning to Greene Thursday evening.
A teen hop will be held at the Country Club on Friday night August 18 from 8 00 to 11 30 pm. Roger Burke of Austin Minnesota will be the disk jockey. Chaperons will be Mr and Mrs Galen Martzahn Mr and Mrs Martin Senne Mr and Mrs Marvin Nelson and Mr and Mrs Florian Rutz.
Bernard A. Wygle chair of Butler Soil Conservation District and assistant regional director for Area 3 attended the Northern Mississippi Area meeting of the National Association of Conservation Districts at the Blackhawk Hotel in Davenport on August 6 7 and 8. Seven area states were represented with information on governing district affairs. The theme was New Dimension for Accelerating Conservation with emphasis on watershed programs and river basin studies. Wygle will present the information to Butler County district members at the August meeting.
