Iowa State Fair officials released the final 10 day lineup starting Friday August 23 featuring 4-H and FFA livestock judging August 23 24 national stock show August 26 29 harness and saddle horse shows August 28 September 1 rodeo August 29 September 1 musical revues Brenda Lee August 23 24 and Lennon Sisters August 25 28 auto races August 23 25 and August 29 30 horse races August 27 28 stock car marathon September 1 thrill day August 26 jalopy races August 24 the annual children s day August 23 with free grounds admission for youths under 16 and a free grandstand party on Morning State Day August 28 Secretary L B Cunningham calls prospects bumper for the state fair.
Butler County holds a plowing contest and demonstration on a farm four miles east and three quarters of a mile south of Allison on Friday, August 23. Fifteen to twenty farmers compete from 1 30 PM. winner advances to Hampton state contest September 14. Dealers join at 2 30 PM. event backed by local contestants, dealers, extension service and Soil Conservation Service.
Voting on the Greene Community School District reorganization will occur Wednesday September 4 from 12:06 to 7:00 PM. Polls operate in all forming townships Scott Floyd Butler counties area and include Bennedette Coldwater Dayton Union Pleasant Grove. five directors to be elected four rural and one from Greene town.
Edith Shultz and Marilyn Peter were named Floyd County Queen of the Furrow winners at the Floyd County fairgrounds. Thirteen candidates competed, with Edith Shultz set to enter Simpson College in the fall. Winners advance to regional competition at West Union. Other honors included 4 H and F F A show awards for showmanship and livestock events.
The office will be open the week of August 26 through 30 for students or parents to pay book rental fees and buy lunch tickets in advance. Books are issued on the first or second day. High school schedules will use a seven period day with morning lab periods and four 45 minute afternoon classes. Band vocal music and athletics each have 45 minutes of school time for practices. Extra curricular activities during designated periods reduce time provided in the school day. If high school students wish to change courses they should discuss with staff.
The Church of the Brethren Northern District of Iowa meets August 23 to 25 in Kingsley. Delegates from Greene with Rev Parks attend. he serves as alternate moderator. Sunday School planned with no local worship service.
Calvin Kelly announced that the property owned by Mrs Leon Kocher in the northwest section of Greene has been sold to Mr and Mrs Raymond Hauser and family who will take possession soon.
New high school students should register before opening day. Parents with questions about curriculum courses or schedules may visit Mr. Bachman. High school office hours are 9:00 to 12:00 and 1:00 to 3:00 Monday through Friday.
Earl Goodenberger announces that C. B. Pony Rides of Iowa Falls will be in Greene all day Saturday, August 24, offering free Shetland pony rides to all local children. Ponies are trained for youngsters and supervised by handlers, with wagon rides also provided by the event as thanks to patrons of local merchants.
Community School will add a young farmer class to the vocational agriculture program this year. A survey shows many interested youths. A meeting is set for Wednesday at 8 p m in the vocational agriculture room to organize the class and elect a council. All young farmers are invited.
AM men bowlers are urged to attend the City Bowling Association meeting at Al's Lanes next Thursday evening August 22 at 7 30. The meeting will elect officers for the 1957 1958 season. Last year’s officers were Roy Henline president Jim McLennan 1st vice president Walter Kemming 2nd vice president Elmer Stock secretary and Dale Willey treasurer. Board directors were Bob Curtis John Hamilton Roger Ackley and Galen Miller.
The Butler Soil Conservation Commissioners announce winners in the 1957 Conservation Awards Program judged by a panel including J B McAninch Ivan Wikner Hugh Seallon and Richard Wagoner. Winners: Division I Marvin Westendorf Allison Division II W S Austin Elmer Garrells Dumont Division III Kay Kinion Parkersburg The awards will advance to regional judging with regional results by September 12 and state judging announced by September 18.
The Women's Club held its annual flower show on Tuesday August 13 in Greene High School auditorium with Mina Ackerman of Waterloo as judge. Winners cover numerous classes including Begonia Fern and African Violet with Ray Neal and Mrs Hattie Boyd among top placers.
Principal W J Tatum released the 1937 58 teaching roster for Greene Community Schools with staff in elementary and junior high. Names include Jerry Eimers as junior high coach and teacher, Florence Tatum and Janet Barnhart in junior high, Paul Lewison, plus multiple grade teachers such as George L Koons in the elementary and batch of fifth through first grade instructors. School nurses and rural school teachers listed as well.
Ives Meoswn Dralle daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Dralle of Ceceneves crowned 1957 Iowa Dairy Princess at the All Iowa Fair in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday evening August 20. Carolyn Card of Webster City retired princess crowned Dralle, who won from 24 entrants to compete nationally in Chicago. She is a Greene High School graduate and works for Lutheran Mutual in Waverly.
Six children aged from 6 months to 8 years are shown with their parents Mr. and Mrs Edward Meyer of Nashua. The bottom row features Rosemary, David, and Stanley aged 3, 2, and 6 months, while the top row shows Anita, Diana, and Stevie aged 8, 6, and 4 years.
A Youth Night Dance will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club Friday August 23 from 8 to 11. All young people in the community are invited. Committee members include Barbara Knapp Marilyn Andrews Charles Nichol Dean Schmidt Jean Bartess and Ellen Hoben.
