Richard Smith appointed General Manager of the Butler Grundy Farm Service Company by the board. He will assume duties September 1. Since 1962 he has been with Farm Bureau and the Farm Service System and will move his family to Allison.
Fifty two of Iowa's top outdoor chefs compete for the Cookout King title at the Grand Concourse. Judging begins 10:00 a.m. with winners announced 11:15 a.m. Prizes include gas appliances and a Las Vegas trip, plus various meat and cash awards. Sponsored by Iowa Farm Bureau and multiple industry groups.
Dennis Studer 18 son of Mrs Wayne Studer of Harcourt drowned about 2 00 PM Monday while swimming in the Des Moines River eight miles southeast of Dayton He aimed for a sandbar to search for agates Randy Phillips a non swimmer tried to aid by tossing driftwood but could not reach him Firemen recovered the body about two hours later in six feet of water Both families formerly lived in the Greene community
M W Bud Hughes of Clear Lake chairs the state wide School Night for Scouting program in the Winnebago Council. Governor Ray chairs the State Planning Committee coordinating the event with all Iowa schools hosting programs October 1. The effort aims to recruit about one thousand new scouts across nine counties, with district coordinators named for North Star, Tomahawk, Twin Rivers, and Butler districts.
Ten youngsters started the Summer Archery Class but rain delays cut attendance. On the final shoot five students competed with Carla Ott scoring 1980 points at 44 per shot, Sheri Muhlenbruck 2280 at 50, Cindy Muhlenbruck 1470 at 32, Kathy Muhlenbruck 1515 at 38, and Paul Alexander 1750 at 38.
Infant son born Saturday August 16 at Waverly Hospital to Mr and Mrs Will F Debner. Douglas James weighed 72 pounds. He has two sisters Margaret and Susan and a brother Marvin at home. Parents Will Debner of Greene and Clyde Mathes and Mrs Mathes of Shell Rock.
Wesley G. Sage of Shell Rock district agent for Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Company completed all requirements for graduation from the Life Underwriting Training Council life course. The council pursues education training for field underwriters and serves as an information clearinghouse. Sage was among 31 Lutheran Mutual agents finishing part of the course this year.
A touring group of thirty four visited Farmers Chemical Company in Joplin Missouri on August 12 en route stops included Co op Nitrogen Plant in Lawrence Co op Refinery Coffeyville Farmland Industries School of Cooperation in Kansas City and Demonstration Farm in Trimble The complete visitor list features Mr and Mrs Charlie Backer Eldon Peterson Francis Brinkman Alphonse Wihlm Bill Wihlm Raymond Johnson and many others.
Iva Barnett was admitted to Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Saturday evening, August 16, for treatment.
Mr and Mrs Lavern Landers announce the birth of daughter Angela Ann on August 7 weighing seven pounds two ounces. She is welcomed by her brother Jason Wade. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Dale Bruns and Mr and Mrs Carl Landers. Mrs Landers had surgery August 19 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital and returned home August 23.
The Area VII funded program in Butler and Bremer Counties provided six weeks of intensive individual therapy for 25 Bremer County children and a portion of Butler County. Led by Carol Tabor Ken Wilson and Harold Webb, the cooperative effort marks a second consecutive year of operation after strong 1968 support.
S A Jerry Lee Ott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ott, arrived home on August 8 for a 14 day leave with his wife Linda, his parents, and relatives. His family visited relatives in Minneapolis before his arrival, and he will return to Long Beach where he is stationed on August 21.
Four local residents filed nomination papers for school board seats. John Van Eschen and Ivan Schafer, each completing two terms since 1963 and 1966 respectively, are not running. District 3 candidates are Lloyd Bigter, William Christensen, Eva Grice, and Martin Senne for the September 8 election. Leo Gabe seeks District 5 in Union and Pleasant Grove Townships of Greene Community School District.
Regular meetings of the Butler County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee are open to the public. Chairman Kenneth E. Hart invites observers to discuss farm programs and ask questions. The committee administers feed grain, price support, ACP and grain storage programs under federal laws. Other members include Vice-Chairman Hugh N. Scallon and Herman Stubbe with alternates Ted R. De Berg and Donald L. Hagarty.
Iowa State Highway Commission invites sealed bids by 1:00 PM on August 25 for two Butler County land parcels near Greene. One 16.2 acre borrow pit valued at 1500 dollars, and another 1.6 acre tract valued at 50 dollars. Bids must include 10 percent certified funds, bid forms from Erling Larson, and are subject to covenants on advertising devices and land use.
Dairy goats will compete at the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo Iowa. The 1969 exhibition runs September 1 to 28 with four breeds Saanens Alpines Nubians and Toggenburgs. The Goat Show spans September 26 to 28 housed in Barn 10 after open cattle release September 24.
Mr and Mrs Ira McRoberts after six winters in Phoenix plan to purchase in Youngtown Arizona a retirement community of about 1700 near Sun City Their Greene home is sold to Mrs Homer Hurd An auction of their household goods is set for August 30 at 5 00 p m Their new address will be 11223 W Kansas Ave in Youngtown Arizona.
A son was born Tuesday August 19 to Mr and Mrs Jerry Meek weighing 7 pounds 145 ounces. The baby is named Robert Wayne. Wayne Meek and Mr and Mrs Dale Wilken announce the birth. Mr Meek is stationed at Fort Polk Louisiana.
The regular meeting of the Butler County Barracks Number 1405 and the Auxiliary will be held at Amvet Hall in Allison on Monday August 25 at 8 00 p m. Lunch will be served after the meeting.

Tim Heidenwirth, son of Mr and Mrs Max Heidenwirth and member of Post 26, was awarded the Eagle rank on Monday August 18. The ceremony, led by scoutmaster Henry Smeins and conducted by Woody Nehrling, included an Eagle Team and multiple merit badge recognitions.
C S Kaiser was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Mason City on Friday for the second time with a severe nose bleed. He is in room 429. Mr and Mrs Duwayne Stark Weather of Ottumwa are the parents of a son Timothy Cecil born August 11. He weighed 9 pounds. Tim has three brothers Dave Rod and Jeff at home. Grandparents are Mrs Cecil Starkweather and Mr and Mrs Orville Schmidt of Cedar Rapids.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed the Sears store on North Main in Charles City Sunday afternoon. Gibson's Discount Center Penny's and the Charles City Press buildings suffered damage with unknown extent. Fire units from Nashua Mason City Floyd and St Charles townships aided. Explosions followed as Sears roof collapsed blowing out front and Press windows. Two firemen overcome by heat and smoke. Robert Frank hospitalized with dehydration but reported improved Monday.
At the 1969 National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo a food tractor pull with Midwest entrants offers 1425 dollars in prizes. The event includes a weight conversion skid and a garden tractor division, with pulls across September 21 to 23. The Southern Iowa Tractor Pulling Association operates the pull, and no gate charge is listed for patrons.
A meeting of the Butler County Democratic Women is set for Monday evening August 25 at 8 9 pm in the home of Miss Annie Rieken south of Allison. A proclamation is being planned by Mrs Moffitt and Mrs DeBerg. Interested ladies are invited to attend.
