Frerichs Serves Aboard Cochrane Off Vietnam Coast

Darrell P. Frerichs, Radioman Second Class, son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Frerichs of Clarks ville, and husband of the former Miss Sandra S. Butler of Adamsville, Ohio, serves aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Cochrane off Vietnam. The Cochrane provides fire support for ground forces with air spotters guiding missiles to enemy targets. The ship is homeported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Mrs. Melvin Riggins of Aredale underwent surgery at Floyd County Memorial Hospital on Wednesday August 13 and is now recuperating at her home since August 22.

Interstate Power promotes Ridney Bergie to Albert Lea district manager

R W Steele of Interstate Power announces Ridney D Bergie will become manager of the Albert Lea District effective September 1 succeeding Paul W Larimore who retires under the company pension plan after 45 years in utilities. Larimore will stay on as consultant as needed. Bergie joined IPC in 1936 and rose from power plant operator to assistant district manager by 1964. He is active in Lions Club American Legion Management Club and more.

She was active in St. Peter's Lutheran Church Naomi Circle Ladies Aid Altar Guild organist for 50 years Sunday School superintendent and teacher and secretary of Butler County Social Welfare Board for 32 years. Survivors include nephew Sterling Koester great nephew Andrew Koester and two great nieces Ellen Koester and Janet Zachry. ASCS Shifts to Mail Ballots for Committeemen Elections

Iowa farmers will elect 4800 ASC Township Committeemen by mail ballot this year, replacing polling places. Ballots reach eligible voters in early September and must be returned by September 16. Nominations via incumbent petitions or six signatures. Ballots counted September 22, with three new township committeemen meeting September 27 to fill county vacancies. Officials take office October 1.

School Opens Drive Carefully to Protect Children

The Motor Club of Iowa launches its School’s Open drive to curb fatalities and injuries as students return to classes. The campaign emphasizes alert driving in school zones with claims of 500 yearly child fatalities and 11,000 injuries nationwide, noting Iowa pedestrians in the 5 to 14 age group constitute 41 percent of last year’s school related harm. Post Office Will Be Closed Labor Day

The Greene Iowa post office will be closed on Monday September 1st all day. No rural delivery or counter service will occur that day. Mail will be received distributed and dispatched as on other holidays.

ASC Announces County Soybean Rates for 1969 Crop

Chairman Kenneth E. Hart of the Conservation County Committee announced 1969 crop soybean county price support rates averaging 2.21 per bushel. The county rates reflect the national average 2.25 per bushel for No. 1 grade soybeans, announced March 6, with last year’s No. 2 grade at 2.50. The national average loan level of 2.25 applies to soybeans at 12.8 to 13 percent moisture and No. 2 or No. 1 grade per factors.

City Election Set For November 4th

The city will hold a regular election for mayor, councilmen and treasurer on Tuesday November 4. Nomination papers are available at the city clerk’s office and must be filed by October 7. Ten Greene voters’ signatures and registration are required. Mayor William Bamker will not seek re election, planning travel and an extended vacation next year after six years in office.

Cow Management Demonstration At Needham Farm

The Butler County Extension Service will host a Beef Cow Management demonstration at Darrell Needham’s farm four miles south of Greene on Highway 14 then two-and-a-half miles east and a half mile north. Gary Frahm says topics include beef cow identification, use of weaning weights and grades for herd replacement, and feeding and management of the beef herd. He urges producers with beef herds to attend.

Hire New Engineer In Butler County

Robert Haylock of Denison named the new engineer in Butler County to replace Dave Everds who resigns to join an investment firm in Davenport. Everds ends October 20 after six years in the role. Haylock, a Maquoketa native and 1963 Iowa State University graduate, will start in Allison on September 15. He previously worked as an engineer for the Iowa State Highway Commission in Davenport and Denison. His wife Hobert and two daughters will relocate with him to Allison.

Entry Deadlines For Cattle Congress 1969

Exhibitors for the 1969 National Dairy Cattle Congress and Waterloo Meat Animal Show should note entry deadlines. Horse entries were due August 23, dairy cattle goats beef sheep and swine by September 1, 4-H show entries by that date, market animals by September 7, garden and flower show by September 12, and art show entries in person September 2 through 5 at the Administration Office. The exposition runs September 20 to 28.

Butler County Taxpayers Eligible for Disaster Assistance

Butler County residents affected by heavy rains and flooding beginning June 25 1969 were approved for Major disaster assistance by the President on August 14 1969. Special tax relief provisions allow fiscal year taxpayers to deduct casualty losses in the applicable year. Taxpayers may amend returns within three months after due dates if already filed. Butler County named among affected Iowa counties per August 25 1969 list. A swine selection clinic will be held Friday September 5 at 1 30 p.m. in the Rath Packing Company Buying Station at Greene. Hazel Cass Tours Iowa State Fair With Show Biz Friends

Hazel M. Cass and Mrs. Cecil Harris accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Nelson to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on August 19. They were guests of Jimmy and Juanita Davis of the Shaffner Players, who won a bronze plaque for best production on the fairgrounds. Hazel received ovations after each performance as Lee Kline of WHO interviewed her for broadcast on August 21. Bert Dexter, longtime Shaffner player, said he would soon go to Hollywood to visit Stoney of Gunsmoke fame. The Shaffner Players close their run at Mount Pleasant from September 26 to October 1, with Hazel hoping to attend more performances.
