The county loses a valued engineer when Dave Everds signs October 20 to enter private business. He led innovations and kept project charts to ensure funds served the whole county. Robert Haylock steps in with modern methods from years with the highway commission. Also, a note on drought and farming, with a moon themed aside.
Darrell P. Frerichs, Radioman Second Class, son of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Frerichs of Clarks ville, and husband of the former Miss Sandra S. Butler of Adamsville, Ohio, serves aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Cochrane off Vietnam. The Cochrane provides fire support for ground forces with air spotters guiding missiles to enemy targets. The ship is homeported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
Mrs. Melvin Riggins of Aredale underwent surgery at Floyd County Memorial Hospital on Wednesday August 13 and is now recuperating at her home since August 22.
R W Steele of Interstate Power announces Ridney D Bergie will become manager of the Albert Lea District effective September 1 succeeding Paul W Larimore who retires under the company pension plan after 45 years in utilities. Larimore will stay on as consultant as needed. Bergie joined IPC in 1936 and rose from power plant operator to assistant district manager by 1964. He is active in Lions Club American Legion Management Club and more.
Miss Freda Maass 83 of Greene died August 26 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. She was active in St. Peter's Lutheran Church Naomi Circle Ladies Aid Altar Guild organist for 50 years Sunday School superintendent and teacher and secretary of Butler County Social Welfare Board for 32 years. Survivors include nephew Sterling Koester great nephew Andrew Koester and two great nieces Ellen Koester and Janet Zachry. Services Thursday August 28 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church burial Rose Hill Cemetery Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Daily programs for women feature beauty, fashion, and floral talks at the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo September 20 through 28 in Anniversary Hall North Auditorium seating over 600. Highlights include Beauty Salon demonstrations, hair and makeup lectures, style shows by local stores, floral arrangement talks, senior citizen events, and a children's program led by Miss Bonnie from Romper Room.

Iowa farmers will elect 4800 ASC Township Committeemen by mail ballot this year, replacing polling places. Ballots reach eligible voters in early September and must be returned by September 16. Nominations via incumbent petitions or six signatures. Ballots counted September 22, with three new township committeemen meeting September 27 to fill county vacancies. Officials take office October 1.
Mr and Mrs Norman Graven welcome a daughter Mara Ann born August 19 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. Baby weighs 8 pounds 4 ounces. Siblings Kristin age 4 and Kurt age 17. Grandmothers Nell Benz Quasqueton and Mrs James Graven Greene.
The Motor Club of Iowa launches its School’s Open drive to curb fatalities and injuries as students return to classes. The campaign emphasizes alert driving in school zones with claims of 500 yearly child fatalities and 11,000 injuries nationwide, noting Iowa pedestrians in the 5 to 14 age group constitute 41 percent of last year’s school related harm. Dan McCarthy urges motorists and parents to participate in the life saving effort to reduce these tragedies.
Clyde Robert Skillen 69 died August 23 from a heart attack while haying. Born February 22, 1900 in Greene, he farmed the area. Survived by wife Mikelena son Glen two grandchildren sister Mrs Guy Sebaugh Marble Rock brother Clarence Greene. Service Tuesday at St Peter's Lutheran with Rev Paul Metzger officiating. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Greene Iowa post office will be closed on Monday September 1st all day. No rural delivery or counter service will occur that day. Mail will be received distributed and dispatched as on other holidays.
Chairman Kenneth E. Hart of the Conservation County Committee announced 1969 crop soybean county price support rates averaging 2.21 per bushel. The county rates reflect the national average 2.25 per bushel for No. 1 grade soybeans, announced March 6, with last year’s No. 2 grade at 2.50. The national average loan level of 2.25 applies to soybeans at 12.8 to 13 percent moisture and No. 2 or No. 1 grade per factors.
The city will hold a regular election for mayor, councilmen and treasurer on Tuesday November 4. Nomination papers are available at the city clerk’s office and must be filed by October 7. Ten Greene voters’ signatures and registration are required. Mayor William Bamker will not seek re election, planning travel and an extended vacation next year after six years in office.
A Social Security Administration district representative will visit Allison at the Sheriff’s Building basement on September 3 and 17 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. People may call the Waterloo district office at 525 W. 5th Street, telephone 234-1534. Waterloo office hours are Mondays 8:39 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Tue-Fri 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Butler County Extension Service will host a Beef Cow Management demonstration at Darrell Needham’s farm four miles south of Greene on Highway 14 then two-and-a-half miles east and a half mile north. Gary Frahm says topics include beef cow identification, use of weaning weights and grades for herd replacement, and feeding and management of the beef herd. He urges producers with beef herds to attend.
Robert Haylock of Denison named the new engineer in Butler County to replace Dave Everds who resigns to join an investment firm in Davenport. Everds ends October 20 after six years in the role. Haylock, a Maquoketa native and 1963 Iowa State University graduate, will start in Allison on September 15. He previously worked as an engineer for the Iowa State Highway Commission in Davenport and Denison. His wife Hobert and two daughters will relocate with him to Allison.
Wendy Martzahn student of Mrs. George Hamilton will present a musical recital on Sunday August 31 at 3 00 p m at the Presbyterian Church. All are welcome to attend.
In hospital Mrs Frank Lockwood is a patient at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City where she was taken on Wednesday August 13.
The Friday afternoon Women's Bowling League will meet Friday at 1 30 p m at the El Bar Lanes. Actual league bowling begins Friday September 5th.
Exhibitors for the 1969 National Dairy Cattle Congress and Waterloo Meat Animal Show should note entry deadlines. Horse entries were due August 23, dairy cattle goats beef sheep and swine by September 1, 4-H show entries by that date, market animals by September 7, garden and flower show by September 12, and art show entries in person September 2 through 5 at the Administration Office. The exposition runs September 20 to 28.
Mr and Mrs Archie Raymond attended a banquet at the Amamosa Men's Reformatory on Saturday evening August 23. Several guest speakers were heard after the banquet. In the afternoon and evening the Raymonds visited with Darrel Havings and Kenny Raymond.
Mr and Mrs Darrel Brinkman and their children returned home on August 20 after a three week camping vacation visiting Air Force Academy Royal Gorge Grand Canyon Hoover Dam Sequoia Yosemite and Rocky Mountain national parks. They also visited Darrels sister and family Aldo Sartori in Monterey Park California and sightseeing including Marineland Disneyland Huntington Park Art Gallery Japanese Garden and Deer Farm. Also called upon were Mr and Mrs Harry Ruffridge of Long Beach California.
Contests set for Butler County Board of Education seats and the Area No. IV race. Candidates include Robert Moore, Paul Jansen, Floyd Serne, and Donald Munson. Incumbent Jack Schuck not seeking re election. Local school board race draws Lloyd Bigler, William Christensen, Eva Grice, and Martin Senne for District No. 3 with Leo Gabe for District No. 5.
Butler County residents affected by heavy rains and flooding beginning June 25 1969 were approved for Major disaster assistance by the President on August 14 1969. Special tax relief provisions allow fiscal year taxpayers to deduct casualty losses in the applicable year. Taxpayers may amend returns within three months after due dates if already filed. Butler County named among affected Iowa counties per August 25 1969 list. IRS guidance Document 547 outlines casualty loss procedures and free copies are available from the Des Moines IRS district office.
A swine selection clinic will be held Friday September 5 at 1 30 p.m. in the Rath Packing Company Buying Station at Greene. Sponsored by Butler County Extension Service and Rath Packing, the session will cover trends in swine production breeding programs for commercial production and testing programs to aid selection of gilts and boars with backfat probe use demonstrated. All Greene area swine producers are urged to attend.
William Wiegmann was admitted to Fier d County Memorial Hospital at Charles City last Wednesday, August 20, for observation and treatment.

Hazel M. Cass and Mrs. Cecil Harris accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Nelson to the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on August 19. They were guests of Jimmy and Juanita Davis of the Shaffner Players, who won a bronze plaque for best production on the fairgrounds. Hazel received ovations after each performance as Lee Kline of WHO interviewed her for broadcast on August 21. Bert Dexter, longtime Shaffner player, said he would soon go to Hollywood to visit Stoney of Gunsmoke fame. The Shaffner Players close their run at Mount Pleasant from September 26 to October 1, with Hazel hoping to attend more performances.
The Country Club hosts Ladies Day at Round Grove Golf and Country Club today. On Monday September 1 a Holiday Shot Gun starts at 9 a.m. followed by a pot luck dinner at 12:30 p.m. and mixed couples golf at 2 p.m. A 9 p.m. dance with Cal Meyers closes the day.Tuesday September 2 is Stag Night.
