The editorial condemns violence in Los Angeles as a misdirected path to equality for African Americans. It criticizes weak leadership in the civil rights movement and argues riots undermine the just cause, noting the loss of life, injuries, and extensive property damage, urging responsible action and stronger guidance from leaders.
The State Tax Commission reports quarterly sales and use tax totals. Greene led in county returns with 17,145.15, Parkersburg third at 12,276.82, Clarksville 9,642.85, and Allison 13,834 for retailers. Additional towns posted smaller sums. twenty nine use tax returns totaled 2,010.02.
Graveside services were held Wednesday August 11 at 11:00 am at the Nor wetk Cemetery for the stillborn infant son of Jerry L. and Frances Ann Starkweather at the Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Rev. Berkenke officiated. Survived by parents two brothers James Kent and Paul Wilson of Nor walk and by maternal and paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Berton Shultz and Mr and Mrs C G Starkweather of Greene. Hamilton Lily Funeral Home of Des Moines in charge.
Robert Curtis, Greene Post Office, announced daily mail times with arrivals at 6:50, 9:00, and 4:15 a.m. and 4:15 and 5:00 p.m. Dispatch occurs at 9:00 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. A last hour rush follows the 4:15 arrival as papers arrive. Patrons urged to mail early. use ZIP codes on all addresses.
Greene banners announce Bozo the Clown will entertain all day Saturday August 28. The event runs from 8 30 p m to 9 00 p m with clown acts and bike bits plus other tricks. Free cash drawings schedule at 10:00 a m 3:00 p m and 8:00 p m with prizes for adults and children 15 and under. Registration at un street. Community Pool offers free swimming on event day.
Glen M. Kelly 76 died at his Plainfield home on Sunday August 15. Born June 6, 1889, he lived in Plainfield and was survived by his wife Alice Gilliand four sons Calvin K. Kelly Bord Kelly Emery and Wayne at home eight grandchildren and one great grandson. One son and one daughter preceded him in death. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Plainfield Methodist Church with burial planned in Centuria Wisconsin on Thursday.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Platte of Sumner announce the birth of a son on August 7 named Mark Henry. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Jacobs of Greene and Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Platte of Sumner.
The fall junior golf tournament will be held at the Country Club next Monday, August 23, starting at 1:00 p.m. Three groups for boys and girls are Sixth grade and under, seventh through ninth, and senior. Graduates last spring are not eligible.
The Greene Community School District schedules a school board election for Monday September 13 with polls from 12:60 noon to 7:00 p.m. in the high school gym lobby. Two seats are open held by Harry Ott and Clyde Stuntz. candidates must be district residents and nomination papers due by noon September 3, filed with Betty Brunsma.
Rev and Mrs Larrel Fryman move from Greene Brethren parsonage to Pioneer Ohio with Jim and Mary Lou. Fryman to serve Silver Creek Congregation. Jim to attend Manchester College and Mary Lou to study at North Central School. Greene Brethren will get Rev Kenneth Byerly from Columbus as new pastor. A basket dinner on Sunday August 22 welcomes the Byerly family.
The Greene Sportsman Club hosts an annual fish fry Friday evening August 27 at the high school auditorium. Tickets are sold by club members and local businesses. The event includes walleyes French rolls ice cream milk and door prizes donated by merchants and manufacturers. Proceeds benefit club activities and local needs.
The Men's Dis Vung Association meets this evening at 800 PM at Greene Lanes. The Women's City Bowling Association will meet next Tuesday evening August 24 at Greene Lane at 7 30 PM.
Jim Marshall finished fourth in the consolation race and the trophy dash at Nashua on Saturday evening. Marvin Moser placed second in the consolation race and sixth in the feature race, highlighting strong showings for the night.
The Charles City Jaycees schedule an 8:00 pm August 24 open meeting at the Greene Community Center to discuss forming a Greene Junior Chamber of Commerce. Gene Vande Kop says many local young men will attend to learn operation, benefits, and requirements. A Q and A will follow, lasting about an hour and a half. The Junior Chamber serves men 21 to 35 and aims to improve communities.
Galen Linde undergoes knee surgery at Mercy Hospital in Mason City after an injury when a calf fell on him earlier this week. The incident prompted medical treatment and a planned recovery period.
The Butler 4-H livestock judging team won first in the 4-H livestock judging contest at the North Iowa Fair. Lindaman led individuals with 274 points of 360, as team members Lindaman Severs and Clark, plus Maurice Busch of Allison, will represent the group at the Iowa State Fair on August 24. Other members include Jim Ward Linda and Doug Le Howard.
Local residents may receive a natural gas system after a town council meeting with Art Brownlee of Northern Natural Gas and Art Krenger presenting the plan. The project, tied to a January 16 vote, envisions a 1966 rollout with an estimated cost of 250000 dollars and household connections to follow a house to house survey in Greene.
New resident Mr and Mrs Neal OBrien welcome a son named David Michael born Friday August 13 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City. The infant weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces.

The last family picnic of the year will be held at the Country Club on Thursday evening August 19. Mr and Mrs John Bauer and Mr and Mrs Dell Curtis are in charge of the committee.
John O Keefe was killed in an auto accident while driving home from the DeWoody Plant after a night shift. The 31 year old Davenport resident died at 4:00 after a vehicle driven by Rev Cathagan struck his car on Highway 30 west of Cedar Rapids. Funeral services were held at St Jude’s Church Cedar Rapids with burial at Calvary Cemetery. attendees included Herman Harrensten Waterloo Robert Schrage Allison and Cecil Starkweather.
In Hospital James Graven is a patient in the Flord County Veterans Memorial Hospital where he was taken Friday for tests. Mrs. Gladys Miller entered the University Hospital in Iowa City on Monday for observation and treatment.
Greene Community School opens Monday August 30 for grades 7 to 12 at the high school and K-6 at the elementary building. The Greene Recorder lists bus routes and fee details including kindergarten through sixth grade tuition, accident insurance, and lunch prices.
Laurie Ann Miller five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Galen K Miller of Bristow was accidentally killed Tuesday evening when a field sprayer on her father's farm tipped. Survivors include her parents two sisters Sandra Sue and Pam and a brother. Funeral arrangements are pending at Reid's Funeral Chapel.
Roger Stewart, son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Stewart, has arrived in Germany to be stationed for one and a half years with the United States Army. He trained at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri and was stationed at Mill Valley California Adair Air Force Base Corvallis Oregon before being sent overseas. Greene Community announces that football practice begins next Friday. Players must report by 3:00 a.m. for the first session and be on the field by 3:00 p.m. for the second session as the season starts.
