Greene High steps up football and scout camporee plans
Coach Larry Helmers announces Friday morning football practice starts Aug 17 at 8 am with about fifty students. The following school year schedule places Varsity from 3:45 to 5:30 pm and Fresh-Soph from 4 to 5:45 pm. Assistant coaches include Larry Munger Paul Bisgard Jam Steck and Dave Larsen. Greene will play nine football games this season opening Sept 7 at home against Allison Bristow. Fresh-Soph games move to Monday evenings. Scout Troop 26 organizes a weekend camporee at Eagle Cave Blue River Wisconsin leaving Greene Friday Aug 24 around 5 pm returning Sunday Aug 26 about 5 pm. Cost per scout is 2.50 with food from Good Old River Days stands and fundraiser clues. A Scout meeting is scheduled tonight in Perrin Park at 7 pm and more fathers are urged to drive.

Bristow Brothers Dominate Open Iowa Horse Shows
Rick and John Schwennen of rural Bristow have dominated open Iowa horse shows for three years earning hundreds of ribbons and dozens of trophies. In 1971 they collected 176 ribbons and 30 trophies, last year 163 ribbons and 54 trophies, and this season have over 100 ribbons and 3 trophies. Rick qualified for Ak-Sar-Ben in Omaha and earned high point at Dumont, with additional wins at West Fork Saddle Club Klemme Meservey and Janesville Town Falls. John has two high point all arounds, narrowly missed at Charles City, and seldom loses in pole bending. They train and breed registered quarter horses and paints on their farm, converting an old barn into a year-round show ring, recently adding a national champion stallion to their stock. The family often rides for others, with father John Schwennen guiding and correcting their work. Sandi, John Jr., and Rick attend Greene High School, children of M&M John G. Schwennen Jr.

Christine Schouten an 18 year old from Noordeloos South Holland arrives as a YFU student to live with Rev and Mrs Paul Metzger and family in Greene. She left July 31 and traveled 14 hours by bus to Copenhagen then flew to Mason City Aug 2 meeting the Metzgers. She will move to rural Osage Aug 20. Christine studied English French and German, is a high school graduate, and comes from a family of five. She enjoys sports piano sailing horseback riding swimming and gym basketball and has two friends who lived in America as exchange students.
