Dr Ray Martin will be guest speaker at St Peters Lutheran Church on Sunday August 18 at 10 am worship service and 2 pm India talk with pictures. He and his family spent five years in Madras India teaching missionaries. A noon covered dish dinner will follow and all are invited.
Governor Hughes and a small Iowa delegation including Leonard J. Hardy of Collins Radio Company will visit the Iowa National Guard encampment at Fort Ripley Minnesota on Friday August 16 by plane. Hardy, son of J B Hardy of Greene, represents Cedar Rapids interests.
A German American picnic is planned in Nevada for Saturday and Sunday August 17 and 18. All residents and visitors are invited to attend.
Lieutenant Paul Mather and wife Mrs. Mather with daughter Diane visit relatives in Floyd before heading to Montgomery Alabama for officer training. The group includes Mr and Mrs Eldred Mather and Mr and Mrs Barton Bonzer in Floyd.
The Greene Sportsman's Club announces tickets for the annual Fish Fry on Friday evening August 30 at the high school auditorium. Tickets are sold by club members and at local outlets. The all you can eat menu features walleyes French fries and a relish tray with coffee or milk. Door prizes gifts and merchandise draws will follow the dinner.
Barbara Markle daughter of Mr and Mrs David Markle had a tonsilectomy Friday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City and returned home Saturday Ericka Jerry and Ingrid Ennen children of Mr and Mrs Fred Ennen also had tonsilectomies at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City earlier last week
Sister Mary Angele of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis in Dubuque is visiting her parents Mr and Mrs William Naumann in rural Greene from August 13 to 19 before heading to Niles Illinois to teach eighth grade at St Johns Brebeuf grade school this coming year. Her aunt Sister Agnes Marie GQSF accompanies her on the trip.
Mervin Schmidt went home Tuesday from Mercy Hospital in Mason City following an operation on his right knee. The discharge marks a successful recovery pace as he begins at home rest and rehabilitation.
Senior Girl Scout Troop 269 plans a six day canoe excursion from Greene to Ely Minnesota via Superior National Forest and Quetico Park Canada. Leader couples Mrs James Drake and Mrs Vernon Rottier accompany the group with return via Duluth August 25.
Named Queen Bonnie Nikolas daughter of Mr and Mrs Leo Nikolas of Osage and granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Pattschull of Greene is chosen Queen of Conservation for Mitchell County Soil Conservation District. Linda McCarthy the other winner also 17 and Class of 1963 graduates. Bonnie will depart August 31st for Rochester Minnesota to study at St Marx's School of Nursing.
Mr. F E Quinn of the State Department of Social Welfare examined Butler County records from November 27 1958 to February 18 1963 to verify that all financial transactions were proper. Total aid payments totaled 1 435 813 17 with 68 148 53 county share after federal and state matching funds. Reimbursements of 71 075 03 accrued to the county with 32 525 95 to be kept by county employees in line with aid programs.
The Merchants were shut out by Janesville 4 to 0 on Sunday afternoon. Greene pitched six scoreless frames before Janesville broke through, and the Merchants failed with bases loaded on three occasions. Ramblers football coach James Sandy announces practice Tuesday and a squad meeting Monday August 19 at 7.00 in the school lunch room. Sixteen returning lettermen expected as Ramblers seek to defend Corn Bowl Conference crown. Sandy’s 63 squad opened 6 0 loss to West Union then went 8 1 while 61 and 62 teams each posted 8 1 records. Team has 487 points for and 121 against. All high school sophomores eligible to try out and earn starting chances.
Lieutenant and Mrs. Graven welcome a son born July 30. The infant is named Pac Harvey. The Gravens reside near Clinton Sherman Air Force Base in Clinton Oklahoma.

In Greene the will of Etta Buchholz provides a $310,000 bequest to the Presbyterian church and a $1,000 gift to the town for cemetery maintenance. The estate, valued around $190,000 in assets, earmarks proceeds for Boy Scouts funds and other worthy causes.

Week end guests in the Donald Staudt and Vern Merfeld homes were Mr and Mrs Tse Kia Cheng and Mr Ho Cheng of Laos, students at the State University of Iowa. Mrs Cheng and Mrs Sitauat are former classmates at Mercy School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids. The Chings are on their way to Formosa with a teaching contract. Ho Cheng will continue as a graduate student of Industrial Engineering at Iowa this year.
Jacob Adelmund, 29, of New Hartford, arrested near Parkersburg on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty before Judge Beardmore, fined $30000 plus $12 costs, paid, and released from Allison County Jail.
