The Editor Speake urges the community to approve the school bond proposal today. It warns a negative vote will raise construction costs by about 11.9 percent and cost taxpayers 45 000 to 50 000. The piece praises the site and plans and emphasizes urgent action to avoid crowded space and poorer education.
A Sacred Music Concert will be held at The Church of The Brethren on Sunday evening May 3 at 8 00 oclock. The program includes vocal and instrumental numbers mixed groups and congregational singing. The public is cordially invited to attend.
Greene Fire Department responded to a Wednesday morning blaze at the Mrs Clint Schultz farm east of Greene tenanted by Paul Mull. High winds spread flames destroying several small buildings a corn crib and 800 bushels of corn though a barn was saved.
The Park program planning session occurs Friday evening May 1 at Mrs. J. T. Truitt home. Women’s Club Community Service Committee members J. T. Truitt B. G. Brunsma Dell Curtis Keith Draile Dale Hardy Galen Mart Zahn Vern Rottler Martin Senne and Herman Stubbe will organize activities. Applications for park program director are being taken by Mrs. Harry Green club president with voting by a committee on Friday May 15.
The third Annual Convention of the Department of Iowa Veterans of World War I and auxiliary will be hosted by gnbnson Co Barracks 1139 at Towa City on May 16 and 17, 1959. Meetings and headquarters will be at the Iowa Memorial Union. National officers will attend. Robert Hess is general chairman and Mrs Leo J Flander is co chairman with Thomas Moore announcing details.
Four individuals were received into membership at the Methodist Church on Sunday, Doris Silvey Jann Fletcher Rollin Ray and Galen Lindell.
Peter S. De Jong announces Owen E. Scotty Thompson as district executive for Butler and Twin Rivers districts. Thompson, previously in St. Louis area council, arrives May 1 and will visit communities, with first Butler district meeting set for May 7 and council meeting May 18. He is married with two children.
Fourteen contestants entered kites in the contest at the Veterans Club last Sunday afternoon. Terry Thomason won first prize for best flying two stick kite and for having the first kite in the air. Carolyn Thomason won consolation prize. Diane Barnhart won first prize for the highest flying kite in the box kite with Karen Barnhart second, and Joe Bailey drew the consolation prize. Patsy Holzschuh won first for the craziest flying kite and also for a high flying kite. Tim Heidenwirth won first with the highest flyer and Douglas Watson was consolation winner. James Drake received a prize for steady flying kite and James Truitt and Larry Truitt for their home made kite which crashed after a short flight. Each contestant received candy. prizes donated by local merchants.
Betty Kester and her companion Annabell Hoguewood arrived from Seattle to visit her mother Alyce Kanter. They plan to continue in a house trailer to Alaska via Minneapolis Winnipes and Edmonton and settle there. Kester has done physical therapy work in Seattle for eight years.
Third District Town Council of Republican Women will meet at Odd Fellow Hall 3997 Main St Clear Lake on Friday with registration at 9 00 am and the business meeting at 9 30 am County women should obtain tickets from Mrs Charles Fischer Allison county president
The Greene Public Library ends Story Hour until fall. From October first Saturday to April it enrolled 85 children, with an average of 21 attending across 26 sessions. The peak turnout was 33 on October 18.
Forty neighbors and friends gathered at the Downing farm and Joe Crowe home to plow disc drag and haul manure. Thirty four tractors prepared 100 acres for future seeding with discs plows manure loaders and stalk cutters. Dinner was at the Downing home with many neighbors assisting and furnishing fuel from local providers.
A Social Security Administration representative from Waterloo will visit Allison at the Court House on May 6 and May 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to help with applying for old age survivors and disability insurance benefits, Social Security cards, and employer identification numbers. The Sports Committee at Round Grove Golf and Country Club announces a nine hole qualifying score challenge. Golfers must post their score in the golf shop by Sunday night May 10 or be placed at the bottom of the board. See the challenge board for the rules. All golfers urged to enter.
Mrs Libbie Lovell returned to her Greene home Saturday noon after visiting her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs James B Grimes and family in Spring Hill Tennessee. Mrs Grimes underwent major surgery several weeks ago.
Mrs Daisy K Moon daughter of Wm and Alice Bell born September 22 1896 in Clarion died Friday April 24 in Rochester Minnesota after surgery. Survived by husband William Moon three daughters Shirley Schwartz Berniece Culbertson and Phyllis Curtis plus sons and sisters. Funeral 2:00 pm Monday at Hamiltons Funeral Chapel officiated by Rev Clayton Becker with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Kay A Connelly will assume duties as Butler County Extension Director on May 1. A 1956 Iowa State College graduate, she has spent the last three years as Extension Youth Assistant in Poweshiek County. She is married with one son and will move from Montezuma to Allison at the start of May.
August Hauser returned Sunday from the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines where he had been a patient for a month and underwent two operations. He will return to the hospital later for a checkup.
Community faces growth requiring school expansion and a separate grade school. The Greene Community School District bond vote on May 5 asks voters to say yes to fund building needs or risk future costs and students leaving for other districts. The piece urges a yes vote to support progressive education and avoid further bond elections.
Greene High School baseball split results with Clarksville 28 7 in a big win as Gabe Led the attack with 4 hits while Marsh and Gabe starred on mound. They fell 4 1 to Rockwell in sectional play as Rockwell used walks and a key triple to pull ahead.
Butler county purchases of United States savings bonds in March totaled 115513, lifting the quarter to 382257 or 37 percent of the 1959 quota. Iowa's statewide March sales reached 16252731, pushing the first quarter to 49944880, up 1.7 million from 1958. John McWhirter, Allison, county chairman, noted national and Iowa averages lag behind the quota.
The Wav erly Women s Missionary Federation rally will be at St. Peter s Lutheran Church Friday with 9 00 a m registration. Miss Ethel Dudde of the Lutheran Children s Home will speak in the morning and Rev Philip Mueller, a missionary in Iraq, will discuss Orient work in the afternoon. Local W M F Society hosts and Ladies Aid provides dinner.
Twenty neighbors and friends brought tractors and equipment to the farm of Mr and Mrs Louis Downing on Friday afternoon to plow and prepare 32 acres for planting. Neighbors furnished the juncton. Francis Wilson furnished a stalk shredder and Lyle Maxson furnished Sinclair gas.
Rev Waters of Joice Iowa will speak at the Butler district Winnebago Council Boy Scouts meeting in Shell Rock May 7. District chairman Cecil Starkweather invites all scouters leaders pastors and interested citizens to attend. Several Greene High School students scored well at the A B Typing contest in Des Moines with about 140 Iowa entrants. Janice Kingery placed third in accuracy with three errors and will receive a billfold and plaque for the school. Lorene Butler Carol Tatum and Robert Junker swept Class A Novice, earning medals for top finishes and high speeds.

The Holstein-Friesian Association of America reports a record 15,720 pounds of milk and 92 pounds of fat in 365 days from a Holstein cow named Christine Burke Fobes 3652637, owned by Ellis and Smith of Greene. The cow, a five-year-old, yielded this total on twice daily milking.
The Greene Motor Company Klassi Motor Company and the Starkweather Garage will provide transport for voters unable to reach the polls. Call 213 in the afternoon with name and address. calls will be handled in order. James Graven and Verle Barth will manage absent ballots for those unable to vote. Vote May 5 at the town hall polls open noon to 7 p.m.
Mrs Roy Taylor underwent surgery Monday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City.
