Richard Wagoner, local instructor, and delegates Roger Martzahn and Larry Gabe attended the State Future Farmers of America Convention in Davenport last Friday and Saturday. Larry Gabe served on the Farm Safety committee, while Roger Wagoner and Mr. Wagoner toured the International Tractor Works in Rock Island, Illinois. The Greene chapter earned a silver award for its Safe Corn Harvesting Campaign from last fall.
Christine Smith ten year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Duane Smith was brought home from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charies City Thursday after five weeks as a patient She is awake part of the time and slowly improving
The Calvary Baptist Church hosts a Thursday evening showing of the film Mid Century Martyrs about the five missionaries slain by the Auca Indians in Ecuador on January 8, 1956. Edith Kruse, a 22 year missionary to the land, will present the film and share her experiences. The public is invited.
Private First Class Rex Knapp, of the 1st Medium Tank Battalion, 33rd Armor, stationed at Gelnhausen, Germany, scored 395 of 400 at Northag Ranges Hohne and becomes second high man in his company in firing the 90 mm tank gun, earning an expert gunner medal.
Voters in the Greene Community School district are invited to a meeting at the high school gym Tuesday April 28 1959 at 8 p.m. The session explains the proposed elementary building bond issue to be voted on May 5 and covers financing plans enrollment impacts and tax effects with the architect present to discuss the plans.
Mrs. Lewis Majewski, chair of the annual poster contest by the American Legion Auxiliary, announced winners. Sacred Heart Academy Class I first Craig Allison second Marcelle Murphy. Class II Sara Jane Green and Beverly Herman. Greene Community School Class I Karen Jewell first Margaret Senne second.

Mrs. Leo Downing 62 of Greene died at her farm home after a lingering illness. Born Anna Marie Crowe in Masonville Iowa on July 28 1896 she married Leo Downing in 1921. Survived by three daughters Earl Mildred and Daniel with eleven grandchildren and one brother Joe Crowe. Funeral at St Marys Catholic Church followed by burial in St Marys Cemetery Williams Mortuary in charge.

Al Rognes won the Mens Scratch Bowling Tourney at Don's Lanes Sunday afternoon with 1144 points across six games. Jack L. Shultz took second with 1061 and Galen Miller finished third with 1048. Clyde Stuntz rolled the highest single game at 243.
Medical Discharge Specialist Fourth Class Gary Slocum, son of Mr and Mrs Charles Slocum, arrived home Tuesday evening after leaving the Army. He had been a patient in the Army hospital at Denver Colorado.

The Ramblers beat Aplington 7 to 2 last Thursday with a big second inning led by Kenny Barth Jim Klunder and Green driving in runs. Monday at Shell Rock Greene lost 5 to 1 as Barth started then Wharton Gabe and Reiter combined to hold Shell Rock to three hits. TheRamblers face Clarksville and play Rockford in the sectional tournament Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Will Glaser was released from Allen Memoria Hospital in Waterloo on Thursday and is now staying at the home of Mr and Mrs Vern Wilkins.
The Spring Roundup for next fall’s kindergartners will be held Friday May 8 at 9:00 in the Greene Community School kindergarten room. Three Greene High School students, Carol Tatum Lorene Butler and Maureen Allison, earned high ratings at a music contest in LaPorte City. The trio performed well, receiving strong praise for their talents and teamwork.

Neighbors gathered at the Francis Beguelin farm last Tuesday and Friday to feed oats and perform farm chores. Beguelin has been a patient at Spear's Chiropractic Sanatorium in Denver, Colorado for three weeks and will remain there for several weeks. His Denver address is Room 177 East 10th Ave Jersey. On Tuesday Duane Miller Tom Kline Walt Wilkie and Oscar Chapman helped with oats. on Friday Duane Miller Leo Wilson August Heeren Glenn Skillen Clyde Skillen Faeh La hauled manure around the farm. August Heeren and Mrs Al Besuelin were also involved.
Lyle Shultz wins the invitational Cribbage Tournament at Bristow on Sunday with a score of 1201. Attendees from Greene include Lyle Shultz Stanley Pond Dr P C Peck Ted Thorpe Roy al Hardman and Mr and Mrs Harold Swant. The winning team features Cline Sniffin of Dumont plus Mr and Mrs Swant and Mr and Mrs Shultz.
Arthur Hall 38 of Cresco died suddenly at home Sunday. He married Vivian Gibson of Greene. Funeral services at Congregation Church Cresco at 2:00 PM. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery Greene about 4:30 PM.

Growers of Butlercounty who marketed their clip between April 1, 1958 and March 31, 1959 are urged by the county ASC office to file applications for payment under the national wool incentive program. The deadline is April 30. Payments will be announced after that date. Tara Bauman, chairman, says information from marketing needs to be in the payment calculation, which uses the price received and the rate necessary to reach a national average price.

Butler county ASC notes that soil bank conservation reserve contracts signed in 1959 largely took effect on April 15. By that date 31 contracts covering 2661.7 acres were active. grazing and harvesting on reserved land are prohibited after contract start. Farmers are urged to contact the county ASC office with compliance questions.
Raymond Lacoste, now patient at Lutheran Hospital in Hampton, underwent his two operations last Tuesday and is expected to be released from the hospital this weekend and brought home to Greene.
Mrs W C Moon of Rochester Minnesota underwent major surgery at St Marys Hospital on Tuesday morning April 14. The Moons are former Greene residents.
