Greene Bicentennial ceremonies mark town flag raise

Senator Cliff Burroughs presented the Bicentennial flag to Greene during outdoor ceremonies. Sylvia Hawker and Betty Markle accepted for the Woman's Club which aided by tree planting and hydrant painting helped earn Greene its Bicentennial status. Mayor Archie Weiss and four Boy Scouts raised the flag at city hall. Beth Draile sang. In May term Wartburg College students Karla Nordmeyer and Jane Hogue train in hospitals and Mayo Rochester. Floyd County Auditor candidate Joyce Marzen, Marble Rock resident, outlines background and political activity. primary set for June 8, 1976.

A May meal calendar lists daily lunch items from May 3 to May 31 featuring pork chops, Salisbury steak, beef stew, cod, liver and onions, roast beef, ham patties, beef and noodles, pork, turkey and other dishes with side salads, fruits, desserts, and rolls. Christian Women's Bicentennial Prayer Breakfast May 14

A Christian Women's Bicentennial prayer breakfast will be held Friday May 14 at 9:00 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. The event is sponsored by women from United Methodist Roman Catholic Presbyterian Church of the Brethren and Lutheran Churches of Greene. Diane Ott of Nora Springs will speak after recently being elected secretary of education for the Mason City Conference of American Lutheran Church Women. An Apr. 30 planning meeting at 9 a.m. in the Lutheran Church basement is open to all women.

Hawkeye Valley Agency nutrition council meets in Greene

The Title VII Nutrition Project Council convened at the North Butler Co. site in Greene on Thursday April 22 with delegates from Iowa Falls Tripoli Independence Waterloo Grinnell Marshalltown LaPorte and New Hampton. The Greene council includes M&M Joe Downing M&M Wilford Griner M&M Floyd Needham Melvina Debner and Mrs Elsie Bliss. Nearly 130 dinners were served.

Butler County Offers Dust Control for Rural Homes

Butler County will spray two applications of a dust control material for rural homes, covering a 17 foot wide strip along 500 feet. The service costs 85 dollars and will be applied late May or early June, then again in August or September. Residents must contact the Butler County Engineer's Office by May 15 to enroll.

Girl Scouts to collect papers Saturday pickup plan

The Senior Girl Scouts will collect papers this Saturday May 1, at curb by 9 a.m. Papers may be in boxes bags or tied in bundles. A marked vehicle will serve rural residents at Pooley Lumber Co parking lot. Papers go to Harold's Service Center near Nashua to be made into insulation.

Greene Commercial Club Proclaims May Bi-Centennial Clean-Up Month

The Greene Commercial Club proclaims May as bi centennial cleanup fix up paint up month. Residents are urged to clean polish and beautify Greene Iowa and its trade area with a finish by May 31. Events include canoe races bath tub races and a fireworks display after a watermelon gathering in Perrin Park.

Women’s Club Spring Banquet in Greene at Center

Members of the Woman's Club of Greene will hold their annual spring luncheon on Tuesday May 18 at the Community Center. The meal will be catered by Marge Kingery with a Bicentennial program presented by club members. Greene Profetes 75th Anniversary Celebration Narrated

On April 22 1976 Chapter CC of the P E O Sisterhood marked its 75th anniversary in Greene with 49 members and guests. Dinner followed by a program recalling original minutes and milestones, with special guests from Iowa chapters and honors for long-time member Mrs Roy Pooley.
