Butler County reports March savings bond sales totaling 144 452 dollars as part of a 409 538 dollar first quarter. The county reaches 36 percent of its 1961 quota, beating Iowa's 34 percent and the national 28 percent, per John McWhirter, Allison volunteer chairman for county bonds drive.
Alan Huss age 17 of New Hartford was arrested Tuesday April 11 in Allison on a charge of operating a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent. He was arraigned in Justice of Peace Court in Allison with $100 bond and released. Everett Larmer age 25 of Auburn was arrested Sunday April 16 west of Allison on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was arraigned in Justice of Peace Court in Allison with $500 bond. not furnished and held in Butler County jail at Allison.
Arthur Steere, a 22 year old Greene native and 1956 Greene Public High School graduate, has been assigned as a refrigeration instructor in the U S Army Engineer Center Regiment at Fort Belvoir Virginia after completing basic training at Fort Riley Kansas. He is married to LeAnn and lives in Stor den Minnesota. He is a 1958 Mankato Commercial College graduate.
Two table tennis champions, Danny Vegh and Bill Puszati, appeared at Greene High School this morning to present a program of entertainment. The appearance was arranged through the University of Minnesota Program Service, a division of the University's Department of Concerts and Lectures. Vegh is from Cleveland and Puszati is from New York. both are imports from Hungary.
The State Conservation Commission placed about 70 northern brood in the river below the dam last Thursday at 12:00 noon. The operation supports the Shell Rock river stocking program to reduce rough fish. Conservation officer James Gregory supervised the effort. Northern were from the Mississippi river, eggs taken from females before transport to Greene. Fish weighed 2 to 4 pounds for females. Greene Sportsman's Club leads a stocking project with rearing ponds and a rough fish removal program. If successful, other groups may join similar projects to improve fishing conditions.
The new 1961 feed grain program will issue negotiable certificates redeemable in grain or cash. Butler County ASC Chairman Herman Stubbe said producers may take half the estimated payment at signup. The plan diverts at least 20 percent of 1951-60 base acreage to soil conserving uses and offers price support on 1961 corn and grain sorghum as well as barley oats and rye. Nonparticipants lose eligibility for price support and payments.
Norman Bud Wolters head track coach physical education instructor and assistant football coach has asked for an open hearing on his dismissal by the school board. The tentative hearing date is Monday May 1.
The Greene High School music departments present a concert this evening at 8:00 in the high school auditorium. The program features the concert band mixed chorus girls glee club and several vocal solos and instrumental ensembles. Everyone is invited to attend.

Specialists in pediatrics orthopedics pedodontia speech and hearing clinical psychology elec trocardiography physical therapy nursing and medical social work will provide complete examinations. Dr John C. MacQueen leads the SSCC program and penicillin distribution to prevent rheumatic fever recurrences is a current effort.
Mrs Leora Williamson learned her son Larry Williamson, a Hospital Corps School graduate, is stationed in Cadiz Spain. After training at Great Lakes he toured Baltimore New York City and Madrid before sailing April 6 He is assigned to a Mediterranean hospital and his New York FPO address is listed.
Kenneth Rodman of Clarksville is named chairman of the Butler County Dairy Promotion Committee for the coming year. Other members include Duane Smith Greene Harley Hansen Plainfield Ronnie Miller Clarksville John Brandenburg Clarksville and Leonard Litterer Aredale. June Dairy Day activities are planned with Allison as a tentative host. Details on the Dairy Princess Contest will be announced soon.
The 59th general assembly debates tax increases to raise revenue. A Senate proposal would restore 1930s income tax rates, potentially adding 12 million. Democrats signaled openness if needed, while Republicans consider a five percent budget cut and a 12 to 15 million annual tax mix affecting cigarettes, beer, use tax, corporate tax, and a two percent hotel service tax.
The Wednesday Night Hot Shot League shows Miller Real Estate and Nettleton’s Insurance among top scores, with high figures from Galen Miller and Roy Henline. In Hospital Floyd Tood a farmer living east of Greene was admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Saturday with a heart condition.
Mrs Robert Curtis is listed as a patient at Worrell Hospital in Rochester Minnesota. She underwent major surgery last Thursday morning.
Louis Fischer 34 of Charles City escaped injury when his 1960 model car left the road one mile south of Roseville Saturday evening. He is manager of Frith Greene Rendering Company in Greene. Deputy Sheriff Ivan Felix said the car clipped fence posts and an electric highline pole before stopping. Vehicle damage exceeded $800, mainly to the front.
Mrs Dell Curtis was discharged yesterday after undergoing surgery at Cedar Valley Hospital. She left the medical facility in good condition and returned home in the afternoon.
Greene Ramblers opened the season by routing the Comets 13 to 1 in five innings at Charles City. Doug Marsh hurled 12 strikeouts, one hit allowed, and hit a batter. Jim Klunder and Doug Marsh led with two and a triple respectively as Charles City used three pitchers and committed eight errors.
Six teen-agers escaped serious harm Saturday when a 1959 Dodge station wagon driven by Gary Rattler missed a curve at Skillen's Corner, six miles west of Greene, skidded and rolled upright in a ditch. Passengers included Jim Wharton Donald Albrecht Judy Bruns Marlene Bruns and Shelby Steere. Marlene Bruns was later admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City for possible rib fracture. Vehicle damage was about $500.
The Annual Invitational Cribbage Tournament took place Sunday April 16 at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. Ninety four players from Charles City Postville Mason City Denver Marshalltown Forest City Bristow Maxwell Cedar Falls attended. Wendall Richerd Forest City won with 1207 points, 1210 last Sunday tied for state lead in Marshalltown. Paul Wunsch Greene was second with 1200 and Bob Ressler Bristow third with 1190. A Marshalltown team won the team title, Forest City second, Cedar Falls third, Greene fourth.
The Catholic Daughters of America will hold a Mother and Daughter banquet at the Veterans Club on Monday evening April 24 at 6 30 o clock Rever end Father Phillip Schmitt of Cresco will be guest speaker.
Jeffery Lynn Boomgarden of Allison faces a stop sign violation fine of five dollars with four dollars costs. Ronald Lee Hurd of Greene is cited for exceeding the speed limit with a ten dollar fine.
The Iowa House approved a three day waiting period before marriage licenses are issued, 64-38, aiming to curb quickie marriages. Rep. Floyd Edgington cited practices in neighboring states and a rise in youthful couples traveling to northern Iowa for fast nuptials. State Flood Director H Garland Hershey named to coordinate flood damage estimates with federal and state agencies.
Lance Corporal Daryl W. Shook returns to Okinawa after patrol duty in the South Pacific aboard the U S S Mc Goffin. He has been stationed on Okinawa since December with the Marines and is the son of Mrs Lyle Shook.
Mrs. Fred Pattchull has returned home from Mercy Hospital in Mason City where she underwent surgery.
