Paul Norman Burroughs son of Mr and Mrs Clifford E Burroughs will be offered appointment to the United States Air Force Academy based on an entrance examination. He was elected as the best qualified candidate among those nominated by Congressman H R Gross to fill the single vacancy for the cadet class entering June 25.
Residents report two men driving a blue two toned car posing as power company reps. They claimed a transformer short and requested upstairs light testing. One man 21, 110 lbs, the other 135 lbs, darker complexions. Sheriff notified. Interstate Power Company urges identification checks.
The Rambler track squad entered three meets last week at Clarksville Osage Invitational and State College of Iowa Relays with multiple event wins by Larry Blum Eldred Kingery John Gersema and Don Butzlaff. Medley and mile relay teams posted strong times but placed without medals at Cedar Falls. This Friday they head to the Comet Relays at Charles City.
Jack Hagarty son of Mr and Mrs Don Hagarty and a senior at Loras College in Dubuque received a graduate assistantship of 200.00 dollars a month for the coming 9 months term with free tuition and summer employment. He, a chemistry major, will leave for Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in late summer to resume his studies.
Four Greene High School fifth graders will see poems published this spring. Renee Hagarty writes Stars and Ferrol Senne authors After the Snow in the National High School Poetry Anthology printed in Los Angeles. Janet Fiddick’s Trees and Marvin Alexander’s Black Knight appear in Lyrical Town from the Iowa Poetry Association, while instructor Mrs Pamilla Smith will have Norns in Lyrical Iowa.
Cub Scout Pack No 26 holds a Pack Meeting this evening at 7 30 p m in the Grade School Auditorium.
Mrs. Gertrude Stockdale president of the Butler County Council of Republican Women announces the spring council meeting will be Friday May 4 at 1 30 p m in the AmVets Hall in Aplington Iowa first lady Mrs. Norman Erbe will be the guest speaker.
William Harold Dilley, 56, died Monday morning at Mercy Hospital Oelwein after a heart attack Sunday evening. The Greene resident had lived there about two and a half years. Survived by wife, one son Patrick at home, one brother Roy Cedar Falls, and a sister Irene Hanken Oelwein. Funeral held Wednesday at 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein.
The Sabin Oral Polio Vaccine will be given to area residents at the Greene High School Auditorium from 1:00 to 6:00 tomorrow Thursday. All residents regardless of age are urged to take part. A minimum charge of 25 cents per dose is set. The program is sponsored by the Cedar Valley Medical Staff with Butler County Polio Foundation. The Woman's Club and Commercial Club assist promotion. Duplicate permit slips must be filled before vaccination. Families may obtain consent forms at local outlets or the clinic site. School children will be vaccinated Thursday morning.
Bernard McKigney freshman at St John s University Collegeville Minnesota will play 1st saxophone in the St John s Concert Band The tour covers Iowa Minnesota and South Dakota from April 25 to May 1 ending with a home concert at the college He is son of Mr and Mrs William McKigney of Dougherty a music major and a pledge in Alpha Kappa Sigma and a Moonmisters dancer.
Dr. P. C. Peck, a patient at the Veterans Hospital in Town City, underwent major surgery on Thursday. Mrs. M. K. Sperry had major surgery at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Monday morning and will remain a patient for a week.

The North Iowa Girl Scout Council plans a May 6 ceremony at Roosevelt Field House Mason City to celebrate fifty years of Girl Scouting. The event, titled The Golden Promise, features a flag procession opening remarks a guest speaker and songs by Brownies and Girl Scouts. The Mason City High School Band will provide music. Brownies and Scouts are asked to report April 26 to the Youth Center for singing practice. The public may attend and KGLO will announce weather-related changes.

Herschel Opperman Butler County Treasurer has been appointed to the State Legislative Committee of the Iowa County Treasurer's Association by State President W. L. Smith. He is among six county treasurers on the committee preparing material for the Des Moines meeting in October to draft legislation for the January 1963 session, aiming for uniform taxing of mobile homes with county treasurers and assessors in agreement.

Army Pvt. John M. Roeder of Route 2 Greene completed an 11 week artillery tracked vehicle maintenance course at The Artillery and Missile School Fort Sill Oklahoma. He entered the Army last October and completed basic training at Fort Carson Colorado. The 1961 Greene High School graduate is 18 years old.
Paul Grendler, son of Mr and Mrs August Grendler, has been awarded a U S Government Fulbright Grant to study in Florence Italy for the 1962 63 academic year. The grant covers travel tuition living expenses and books. He sails from New York on September 27 aboard the Constitution and will spend three weeks in Perugia before moving to Florence. He will be accompanied by his wife Marcella after their June marriage. Grendler, a Ph D candidate in Renaissance History at the University of Wisconsin Madison, will conduct research for his doctoral dissertation with expected Ph D completion in 1964.
About 35 members from Butler County attended a meeting of World War 1 Organizations at Barracks 14035 and Auxiliary. Walter Kyle of Greene was named commander and Mrs. Alfred Het fe of Cedar Falls was elected president. Hostesses were Zula Ramker Vera Davis Dick Van Horn and Walter Kyle. Next gathering scheduled for Clarksville in May.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Gist have returned home after spending six months in Phoenix Arizona The couple resided in the city during that period and are now back in town with plans to resume regular activities.
Doug Marsh pitched a 7 to 0 Rambler win over Nora Springs, striking out 14 in 21 straight outs. Dale Poppe drove in two runs with a bases loaded single, while Ramblers benefited from miscues by Nora Springs as Greene drew a first round bye and the semi final set for Thursday against the Rockford Nashua winner.

Frances Ver Plank 82 died Saturday afternoon at Ahrens Nursing Home Clarksville after months as a patient. Born December 13 1879 on a Greene area farm, she was married to Silas Ver Plank who preceded her in death. Survived by son Dale Ver Plank Greene three granddaughters seven great grandsons two brothers Louis Tack Greene Glenn Tack Marble Rock two sisters Susan Hesal road Nashua Marie Taylor Greene Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with Rev G F Butler. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid Hamilton Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Butler County Farmers Union will hold a special meeting at City Hall in Allison on Tuesday May 1 at 8 p m to introduce all county candidates running for office. Neel Hill of Webster City who is candidate for Congress man for the third district will be the featured speaker. The public is cordially invited to attend.
The first nationwide savings bonds drive in eleven years starts May 1 and runs for two months. John McWhirter of Allison, volunteer county chairman, says the "Freedom Bond Drive" invites Americans to join the fight for freedom and build economic strength. March Series E and TH bond sales in Butler County totaled $57,906, 32 percent of the county’s six month quota, with all six months' sales counting toward the goal.
New resident Mr and Mrs Fred Meyne announce the birth of a daughter at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City on Wednesday April 18. The baby weighs 8 pounds 3 ounces and has been named Judith Ann.
A concert is set for next Tuesday May 1 at 3 00 p m in the High School Auditorium featuring the Concert Band Mixed Chorus Boys Glee Club and Girls Glee Club. The event serves as a pre contest with large group selections for the Large Group Contest at Clear Lake on Saturday May 5 including Holst First Suite in E flat and Kenny Coat of Arms March. Everyone is invited.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars held a regular meeting at the Veterans Club on Monday night, April 16. An election of officers was held and the new officers named are Bill Walker commander Florian Rutz senior vice commander Walter Hemmerich junior vice commander and James Marshall quartermaster.
An Iowa National Guard display featuring the Liberty Bell and an Honest John rocket will visit Greene on Friday May 11 from 8 30 to 9 30 am to promote Iowa Freedom Bond drive. The tour will visit 77 Iowa cities between May 1 and July 4 with Maj General Junior F Miller assisting the Treasury savings bond effort. The display rides on a flatbed low boy truck and will be driven by two Guardsmen.

The Holstein-Friesian Association of America reports outstanding registered Holstein cows in the area. Helen Burke Fobes Lass 3512-607, a nine year old, yielded 16 020 pounds of milk and 667 pounds of butterfat in 365 days. Hester Holly Winterthur Posch 45953960, a three year old, produced 16 662 pounds of milk and 603 pounds of butterfat in 330 days. Both are owned by Ellis & Smith, Greene.
