Iowa’s Liberty Bell replica, used in the national Freedom Bond Drive, will tour about fifty communities in May and June to promote United States savings bonds. It will be in Greene on Friday May 11 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. All are invited to view the bell on the National Guard transport.
Eighth grade students from Greene Community School and St Marys Academy toured Des Moines last Wednesday. Two buses carried chaperones Janet Barnhart Jerry Eimers and Mr and Mrs V J Tatum. They visited the Capitol Building Historical Museum Register and Tribune and the Municipal Airport. The group were at Bishops Cafeteria.
Galen Brinkman of Greene competed in the Fifth Region Army Air Defense Command XVI U S Army Corps Rifle and Pistol Matches at Fort Riley Kansas. The two day event featured 17 pistol and 10 rifle contests amid winds up to 34 mph. Brinkman, 23, entered the Army last October after basic training at Fort Carson Colorado. He is a 1956 Greene Community High School graduate.
Ramblers claim Class D title at Comet Relays hosted by Charles City last Friday. No standout star, but strong showings in open events helped edge big schools like Mason City and East Waterloo. Key results include Clapham winning the freshman 100 and the freshman 440 relay in heat, Brunsma and colleagues third in shuttle hurdles, and Larry Blum runner-up in broad jump. Final team scores list Greene 44, Grundy Center 30, Beaman Conrad 28, St Ansgar 28, Sheffield 19. Nora Springs 16, Jessup 9, Nashua 3.
The Cub Scouts schedule a hike for Saturday May 12 in Graydon Anderson's Woods. Scouts meet at 9:00 a.m. at the scout rooms and transportation is arranged part way out and back. They should bring cooking utensils and foil wrapped dinners. Return to town is expected by 3:00 p.m.
Fines shown in J. P. Moffett's Court include Harold Bode of Austinville for a stop sign violation with 5.00 fine and 4.00 costs. James Ibeling of Dumont charged with speeding 20.00 fine and 4.00 costs. Roger Duane Harding of Nashua charged with speeding 15.00 fine and 4.00 costs. Myron Eikenberry and Howard Wells charged with defrauding an inn keeper. each paid 10.00 and 9.50 costs. Ronald Lee Tjaden of Charles City charged with speeding 25.00 fine and 4.00 costs.
The Greene Commercial Club will hold a supper and quarterly meeting at the high school cafeteria on Thursday May 106th at 6 30 p m. All members and their wives are invited to attend.
A new color filmstrip titled Darkness In New Delhi will be shown at the Baptist Church on Thursday May 3 at 730 p m. The release from the American Council of Christian Churches AV department calls it a vivid portrayal of the World Council of Churches recent assembly and its alleged betrayal of the faith. The public is invited to attend this service.

Judging in street clothes emphasizes health, natural attractiveness, dairy ties, and personality. Prize is a $25 savings bond and a trip to the Iowa Dairy Princess contest. runner-up gets $10. Bernice Gilson Butler born November 3, 1876 near Nashua died April 26 after a two month illness in Waverly hospital. He married Minnie Mabel Norton January 1, 1811. Survived by son Garth Greene, daughter Gladys M at home, two brothers Milo Farmdale Ohio and Andy address unknown, three grandchildren Doris Paul John, and two great grandchildren Philip and Janell. Funeral at Nashua Methodist Church Saturday at 2 p.m. burial Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mary Lou Squires daughter of Mr and Mrs Everett Squires received her cap during the capping ceremony at Saint Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester Minnesota held Sunday April 29. She is part of a class of ninety eight and will take a one month vacation with her parents before resuming nursing studies on May 28.
A community work day at the Raymond Wagoner farm near Dougherty had twenty one men using tractors and plows to till 100 acres finishing at noon. Neighbors had previously cleared 28 acres of oats a week earlier. Fuel was provided by Butler County Farm Service Company and delivered by Art Weiss. Helpers included Earl Butt jer, Walter Fredricks, Vernon Hudson, Dean Edwards, Maurice Mead, Leonard Litterer, Carl Worley, Kenneth Kuppen, Earl Miller, Duane Johnson, Darwin Noelting, Robert Dolan, Lowell Hudson, Elmer Cramer, Warren Ebling, Delbert Spring, Vern Merfeld, Hubert Worley, Jim Worley, Darwin Ebling and Cur lis Moore. Local women provided meals for lunch and dinner. Mr. Wagoner visited his back two weeks ago.
Miss Freda Maass came home Saturday afternoon after a winter vacation in Austin Texas with her nephew and family Mr and Mrs Sterling F Koester. She was met Wednesday by her brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs E J Koester of Shell Rock. She stayed the rest of the week with the Koesters in Shell Rock before returning to Greene Saturday afternoon.
The Greene High School vocal department earned top marks at the State Music Contest in Osage on Saturday. Among about 15 Class B schools, divisions included multiple 1 ratings for vocal ensembles and solos, with several 2s and 1s for instrumental solos and ensembles. The next event, a large-group contest at Clear Lake, features the high school concert band, mixed chorus, girls glee club and boys glee club.
Bill Walker local manager of B and W Fine Food Store announces an expansion to cover two buildings within a week or ten days. The store will feature a triple front and add more dairy cases, shelving, and a broader line of groceries to serve northeast Iowa patrons.
In hospital news Mrs John Blake was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Waverly for observation on Tuesday.
Greene High School freshman class hosts a Spring Carnival dance for seniors on Saturday evening May 5 at the high school cafeteria. Admission is charged to all except seniors. Refreshments served. Dance runs 8:00 to 11:00. All high school students

Butler County Republican Women plan a May 4 meeting at Amnets Hall in Aplington at 1 30 pm. Mrs Norman Erbe will discuss her role as governors wife and district officers as well as county candidates. All Republican Women invited to attend.
Gene Moss sustained a sprained ankle in a fall at Greene Community High School building last week and is now mobilizing on crutches.
Funeral services for Helen Elizabeth Petitt aged 88 were held Monday at Chenowith Funeral Home Fredericksburg. She died Friday April 20 after residing two years at Clark Nursing Home Greene. Born August 27 1873 in Chickasaw County she leaves daughter Mrs Eugene Waterman Clarksville three sons Leo Fredericksburg Claude Marshalltown John Janesville Wisconsin fourteen grandchildren and fifty great grandchildren. Burial was in West Cemetery Fredericksburg.
Peck returns home Saturday morning from the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City after major surgery on April 20.
The Salvation Army plans its annual drive in Greene Iowa and Butler County excluding Parkersburg and Clarksville where Community Chest fundraising continues. Ten Butler County communities including Allison Aplington Aredale Bristow Dumont Clarksville Greene New Hartford Parkersburg Shell Rock will raise funds for glasses dental work clothing school lunches and temporary assistance while Booth Memorial Home offers services for unwed mothers. John Alexander the Held representative will visit communities and rural areas except the excluded towns.
Connie Jane Conn infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Loy Conn was baptized Easter Sunday at Bennedette Wesleyan Methodist Church.
Roger Juhl and L Dennis Juhl sons of Mr and Mrs Louie Juhl returned to their navy bases after a fifteen day leave L Dennis S A completed boot camp at San Diego and was assigned to Naval Aviation Electrical School at Jacksonville Florida for twenty four weeks Boxer S N attending Sonar School at San Diego California for thirty weeks after which he will return to his ship the USS Lansing at Hawaii
Max Lindley aged 33 of Clarksville was arrested in Greene Friday afternoon April 27 by the Highway Patrol on a charge of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He was arraigned in Justice of the Peace court in Allison Friday night with bond set at 500 dollars awaiting the next term of court. Bond was furnished Saturday afternoon and Lindley was released from the County jail in Allison.
