Supt V J Tatum attended the Seven State Drive In Conference for Community School Administrators in Fargo North Dakota on April 8 9 10. Sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators and the Department of Rural Education of the NELA the event focused on problems of community schools serving rural areas. Tatum reported the trip worthwhile despite a Sunday blizzard en route.
Near Allison farmer Bob Bruns narrowly avoided serious injuries Monday when a fall into a power take-off on a loading wagon ripped off his clothes but left him with only a few bruises.
M K Sperry of Greene was appointed today by Gayl Farnum to chair Section IV of Division II for Upper Iowa University's Dorman Gymnasium Project. Section IV includes Butler Franklin Grundy and Hardin counties. Sperry, a 1922 Upper Iowa graduate, runs a local insurance business and played sports under Dr. John Dorman at the college.
Cecil Starkweather has announced his candidacy for Greene County Supervisor District 2, including West Point Pittsford Bennerette Coldwater and Dayton Townships. A Greene native with a long civic record, he served as Greene mayor for three terms and now chairs Greene Planning and Zoning. He is active in Boy Scouts and community affairs while working as parts manager at Earth Chevrolet and residing with his wife and son.
Mrs. Leola Ekwall and her son Bill learned Saturday night of the death of Bill's grandfather Carl Ekwall. Funeral services for Mr. Ekwall were held Tuesday afternoon at Nashua.
A big crowd attended the Sports Night at the high school gym Friday evening raising 83.77 dollars for new girls basketball uniforms. The opening feature was a girls versus alumni basketball game won by the high school team 23 to 20 with Jepson scoring 10 and Wharton 8. A trampolene demonstration followed by a finale where Greene Commercial Club members beat the high school faculty in volleyball 21 to 18.

Cliff Fischer of Greene was fined $5.00 and $4.00 costs for failure to yield right of way. Richard Collins of Mason City and Richard Reams of Charles City were each fined $5.00 and $4.00 costs for stop sign violations. Ronald Herman Isaacson of Ames was fined $13.00 and $4.00 costs for speeding.
The Boy Scout spring Camporee will be held April 27 28 and 29 at the Winnebago Scout Camp Grounds near Marble Rock. Parents are to bring a pot luck dinner on Sunday April 29.
Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Dulin returned home last Wednesday from a four month vacation. They visited their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Bettesworth and family at Vancouver Washington, and their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Dulin, at St Helens Oregon.
The Ramblers beat Nashua 17 to 0 in an abbreviated contest after Nashua arrived late and rain started. Greene helped with 17 first inning runs on seven walks six hits and four errors, led by Dale Poppe’s triple. Harry Barth pitched three scoreless innings. Localers will host Nora Springs Wednesday due to a track meet at Osage Thursday.
The Cub Scout baseball program begins on Saturday April 21 with Cubs asked to report at 9 00 a m at the ball field.
Mrs. Paul Junger Jr., 48, formerly of Greene, died April 3 in Los Angeles of a cerebral hemorrhage. Survived by husband, one son Bill, three grandchildren, and father-in-law Paul Junger Sr. Funeral and burial were in California.
Cub Scout Pack No 26 will meet Wednesday April 25 at 7 30 p m in the grade school auditorium.
The fourth annual Civil Defense Class closed Tuesday evening April 17 at the high school with nineteen adults attending including ten Clarksville Fire Department members. Local participants were Josephine Grendler Gerald Hildebrand Robert Mead and Dale Schroeder.
Richard Balkenende 21 of Marble Rock died Monday afternoon while wiring an extension at the Beef Packers Plant in Fort Dodge. Tom Austin 28 of Mason City also died when loose crane cables touched a high voltage line. Balkenende died on arrival at a hospital. Austin died soon after. Funeral services set for St Marys Church Marble Rock with Rosary at Reichls Milton Funeral Chapel. Burial at St Marys Roseville churchyard.
Coldwater Township farmer Marvin Bruns, 47, has filed nomination papers for the 2nd District Democratic nomination for county supervisor. A longtime resident of Greene, Bruns owns 160 acres, serves as Coldwater Township trustee and seven years as school director, and is a St. John's Lutheran Church member with former deacon and finance committee roles. He is married to Rosamond Dralle and they have three daughters.
The State Conservation Commission announced stocking has begun on the northeast Iowa trout streams with spring conditions delaying start. Stocking, mostly 10-12 inch fish with some 4 pound brood stock, will proceed on all streams and restock at three week intervals. Spring branch at the federal hatchery near Manchester and Backbone State Park streams have been stocked. escapee trout are reported on the Turkey River near Big Springs hatchery northwest of Elkader. Fishermen are urged to renew licenses and trout stamps before fishing.
Phillip Pooley and Daryl Fischer, juniors at Greene Community High School, win NSF sponsored summer scholarships at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. Pooley will study chemistry and biology while Fischer pursues mathematics and biology. each will earn eight college semester hours. Pooley is son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Pooley, Fischer son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fischer.
Calvin Kock 33 of Allison sustained a broken back in three places when his car skidded off Highway 20 near New Hartford. He was treated at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo and later moved to Veteran's Hospital Des Moines in satisfactory condition.
Lincoln signed three pivotal laws during the Civil War era establishing the USDA the Homestead Act and the Land Grant College Act. These acts advanced higher education via extension services with early milestones in Iowa Butler County hiring its first Extension Agent Victor Flint in 1918 and the first Home Economist in 1920.
Mr. and Mrs. George L. Shafer returned home Monday from Chandler Arizona where they spent the winter months. They visited their son and daughter in law Mr. and Mrs Harland Shafer at Worland Wyoming enroute.

Greene County Dairy Committee chair Kenneth Rodman announced Greene will host Dairy Day June 9 with co sponsorship from the Greene Commercial Club. Events include a Dairy Princess contest parade free dairy bar band concert and talent show. Prizes will be awarded for oldest and fanciest milk stools and largest butter churns. The Princess rules will be published soon. local girls are encouraged to enter. The winner advances to the state contest in August.
A five piece coffee service was presented to the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church as a memorial to Dewitt Marsh by his family and friends.
Roger H. Wells, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wells, earned the Iowa Farmer degree Friday April 13 at Waterloo. About 200 FFA members from 130 departments were honored at the 34th annual convention, the highest degree offered by the state FFA organization. Applications totaled 303 from 158 departments. only up to two percent of the 10,018 active FFA members may receive this honor.
Barney L Morgan, five, of Bristow, was arrested in Allison on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated second offense. He was arraigned in Justice of Peace court in Allison, bond set at 750, and appeared in District Court on April 13 pleading guilty. Judge Wild set June 1 for sentencing. bond posted and he was released from county jail.
Greene Girl Scout Neighborhood launches its annual fund raising campaign on April 23. Volunteer workers will visit business men, parents, and friends to support Scout activities for girls ages seven to seventeen. Eighty girls belong to six troops in the neighborhood.
