A persuasive editorial urges passing the April 30 school bond to fund education, argues tax relief for seniors under $3,500 income, and warns that rejection would raise taxes or cede school control. It frames vote as community progress and invites support.
The Iowa State Tax Commission released a report on taxes paid by Butler County retailers for quarters ending June 30 and September 30, 1967. County totals show 112,514.47 in taxes, with Allison leading in one quarter and Greene leading in the next, followed by Parkersburg, Clarksville, Dumont, Shell Rock, and New Hartford among others. Consumer use tax and use tax on vehicles and trailers are also listed for the two quarters.
A saddle club organized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Jewell drew 26 attendees. The group planned its first trail ride for Sunday May 26 at 1:00 PM, with a rain date of Sunday June 2, inviting all interested residents to join and noting a future drill team may form.
Chaplain and Mrs. Donald Neely and family spent a weekend with Mrs. Grace Barnhart. Neely was summoned by his sister’s death in Bettendorf Iowa and will depart May 5 for Vietnam to complete a tour ending October 2.
Larry Tack, son of Mr and Mrs Glendale Tack, earned a rating for his baritone solo at the Small Group Music Contest held Friday and Saturday at St Ansgar. He sang It Is Enough from Elijah by Mendelssohn. Marcie Kelly, daughter of Mr and Mrs Calvin Kelly, received a Division I rating.
New resident Mr and Mrs Galen Brinkman welcomed a daughter born Wednesday April 17 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City. The 9 pound 2 ounce baby is named Jill Marie and welcomed home by foster brother Billy Wygle. Grandparents are Theodore Brinkman and Lee Payne of Greene.
Kenneth Sutten, longtime mentor of the State Center School girls teams, resigns to take a similar role at West Marshall in State Center. He will coach girls basketball, track, softball, and driver training while teaching boys physical education. Under his leadership Greene Ramblerettes held the Corn Bowl Conference title for six years and have 47 straight conference wins.
Ray Holtz, band director, works in cramped quarters that double as a private lesson room. The proposed band issue would provide better space and storage to handle equipment and instruments and reduce overwork.
Mr and Mrs Jerald Petznick of Mason City announce the birth of a daughter on Wednesday April 17 weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces. The baby has been named April Joi. Mrs Petznick is the former Marlys Wagoner, daughter of Mr and Mrs Raymond Wagoner.
The annual pre contest concert by the vocal and instrumental music departments moves from Wednesday May 1 to Tuesday April 30 at 8:00 PM in the high school auditorium. The program features the concert band mixed choir solos and ensembles with selections like Silver Quill March and Finale From the Fourth Symphony. Music Mothers will serve refreshments. this is the final formal concert of the year.
The Board of Education and the Citizens' Steering Committee will conduct an open meeting at 8 00 p m this evening Wednesday at the Elementary School to review the proposed building program. Readers with questions are urged to attend.

Mrs Roy Martzahlen underwent major surgery on Monday morning at St Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota.

The First Methodist Church of Greene became the United Methodist Church on April 23 as the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren Churches joined to form an eleven million member denomination. Delegates will refine a new Discipline and plan for four years, uniting two long standing streams of American Protestantism.
Ray Fiddick was admitted to Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City for observation and treatment on Tuesday, seeking medical care and monitoring.
Mr and Mrs Earl Jacobs of Tripoli announce the birth of a son on April 10 weighing 9 pounds 10 ounces named Christopher Dean. He is welcomed by brother Craig and sister Michelle. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs P A Jacobs Greene and Mrs Stein Des Moines.
Daylight Savings Time will take effect next Sunday April 28 at 2 00 a m All residents should turn their clocks ahead one hour when they go to bed Saturday evening to insure proper time Sunday morning.
Greene High School dominated the State Small Group Contest for class B at St Ansgar with 20 Division I ensembles and 7 Division I soloists, surpassing last year’s totals. Soloists include Marcie Curtis Jolene Litterer Wendy Martzahn Duane Brinkman Lyle Williamson Steve Meyer Kent Jacobson.
Airman First Class Ronald S. Litterer, son of Mr and Mrs Leonard Litterer, stationed at Wadena Air Base in Okinawa, serves as a freight specialist with the 603rd Military Airlift Support Squadron. The squadron moved over 800 thousand passengers across Pacific routes and transported nearly 200 million pounds of aircraft parts, ammunition, and medical supplies in the past year.
The Youth Center will be open on Saturday night for freshmen and sophomores only.
The Ramblers posted their third straight victory by a 6 to 5 win over Newman of Mason City after a 9 inning contest. Starter Wendell Stuntz gave up 6 hits 3 earned runs and 8 walks before leaving in the 7th with a 4 3 lead and two on. Larry Eimers relieved and a mis play on a potential double play allowed a run to score tying the game.
The Greene Community School District schedules a special election next Tuesday April 30 to approve two bond measures totaling 3.55 million dollars for education improvements. One bond covers four new classrooms at the elementary, high school additions and remodels to expand arts, music, gym and facilities. The second bond funds a new bus maintenance shop. Polls will be open 12 noon to 7 PM at the high school gymnasium Central Daylight Time.
Harold Holzschuh is back home in Rochester after a two week patient stay at Methodist Hospital in Minnesota’s city. He completed treatment and was released Friday.
The Cub Scouts will meet this evening at 7 30 p m at the high school building instead of the elementary school.
Herman Faber was elected the national delegate to the Presidential Convention in Miami Florida on August 5 1968 as one of the delegates from the Third District. He is 53 years old married with two children Sharon Crosser of Eldora and David of Parkersburg. He has been a Republican county chairman of Butler County for four years and chaired the Gross for Congress Committee for 14 years. He runs an insurance agency in Parkersburg for 22 years and has led local groups including the Parkersburg Chamber of Commerce and the Better Highway 20 Association. He is a former president of the Iowa Mutual Insurance Association and has served as a national director for three years.
The Butler County Dairy Day and Dairy Princess Contest will take place on June 8 during Clarksville Pioneer Day. Sponsors urged to support a candidate. Deadline for entries May 15 at Butler County Extension Office Allison. Contest rules and entry forms are available there.
At Richard Jacobs farm southeast of Greene two good neighbor deeds were performed. On April 13 groups hauled manure with many named helpers and women served lunch. On April 16 neighbors gathered to disc and plow with more named participants and lunch provided by several women. Fuel was supplied by the Farmers Inc Co op Society.
