Mrs Mervin Schmidt underwent emergency surgery Friday afternoon at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. She is to remain hospitalized there for about ten more days.
Robert Curtis, local postmaster, announced in Washington DC that the Post Office Department will issue a commemorative airmail stamp on May 15 marking the 50th anniversary of U S Airmail Service. The stamp reproduces a Curtiss Jenny that carried mail on the Washington New York run when service began May 15 1918 and will go on sale in Greene on May 16.

Nine neighbors and friends gathered at the home of Mr and Mrs Irvin Van Raden to haul manure while Mr Van Raden recuperated at Floyd County Memorial Hospital after a heart attack. Helpers listed include Claude Kanter Vern Thompson Paul Cheney George Shultz Francis Belknap Ernest Butterbrodt Edwin Brunner Gary Kanter and Charles Thompson.
L F Bachman principal of Greene Elementary School attended a two day workshop at the University of Northern Iowa in Gilchrist Hall. The session aimed to familiarize Iowa elementary school administrators with the background needed to use elementary school counselors.
The Greene Community School Junior High Chorus will stage Mark Twain's The Adventures of Tom Sawyer at the high school auditorium Tuesday night May 7 at 8:00. Harold Blosser will direct with Miss Wilda Hill in charge of scenery. Cast includes Mark Peyton as Tom Sawyer Robbin Helm as Aunt Polly Steve Brinkman as Huckleberry Finn Barbara Brinkman as Becky Thatcher and others.
Gaile Yerkes of Vinton was critically injured and C R Man Herbey Schmidt of Cedar Rapids died when an electrically powered scaffold fell 85 feet during painting of a water tower. The cable failure caused the plunge. Schmidt struck a cement pillar on impact. Yerkes survived transfer to a hospital in Iowa City. Both men worked for Cedar Rapids contractor D C Taylor.
Mrs Geneva Baxter 82 of Charles City fractured a hip after a Saturday fall. She was admitted to Floyd County Memorial Hospital where the fracture was pinned.
Children in the Greene community may receive measles protection at clinics in Charles City and Rockford on Friday May 10. The Floyd County Medical Society and the Iowa Department of Health sponsor the End Measles Clinic open to children ages 1 to 15 who lack protection against measles. Rockford High School gym hosts 1:30 to 3:00 pm, Charles City manual arts building 807 Ferguson 4:00 to 8:00 pm. Further details will appear in next week’s Recorder.
Harold Barnett entered Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Monday April 29 and underwent surgery the following day.
The Butler County Rural Electric Cooperative held its Iowa Rural Youth Tour Contest with Jerry Tack named as a winner. He will join other Iowa youths on an all expense paid trip to Washington DC for one week, departing Des Moines by plane on June 10. The contest featured a written test over REA materials.
The 1967 Agricultural Conservation Program aided 238 Butler County farmers on 7482 acres, with nationwide involvement by about a million farmers. Investments totaled around 1.848 million locally with half funded by ACP cost sharing and the rest matched by farmers. Charles Vance Lockwood, 94, longtime Greene resident, died April 27 after a life spanning Iowa farming, Davenport work, and World War I service. services held April 30 at Reid's Chapel with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Myrna Landers daughter of Mr and Mrs Ardean Landers of Greene was chosen by the local American Legion Auxiliary and Greene Community School to attend Girls State at the University of Northern Iowa Cedar Falls from June 3 to 9.
Levi Ackart, United Telephone Company manager, says some long distance and information calls from Greene and Marble Rock may be delayed due to the Bell System strike. Supervisors in Charles City strive to keep service near normal. calls needing operator handling face delays, especially person-to-person and reverse-charge calls. Station-to-station calls are least affected. urgent calls should stay on the line for an operator.
Mrs. Fern Clark sells Clark Rest Home to Lyle and Alberta Mathers who take over operation today May 1. Clark purchased the home twelve years ago.
Stanley Van Dyke son of Mr and Mrs Henry Van Dyke left the United States on February 15 aboard the USS Piedmont. He spent weeks at Subic Bay Philippines and the ship is bound for Koochung Formosa. Stanley works in the laundry aboard the ship. His address is Stanley Van Dyke SN B603268 S-3 USS Piedmont AD 17 FPO San Francisco California 96601.
The Girl Scouts will collect newspapers on Saturday May 4. The event invites residents to help by placing papers at curbside for pickup.
The Greene Fire Department responded Tuesday morning at 11 15 to extinguish grass fires along the railroad right of way. One truck battled a blaze at the north edge of Greene near the Scout trees and another fought a fire at the Dean Ott farm northwest of town. No damage occurred.
Adult education classes start tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at the Community Center. All adults in the community are welcome to attend.
Ramblers finish runner up among Class D schools at the Comet Relays in Charles City last Friday with 40 points as Northern University High of Cedar Falls wins with 42. Allen Hogue sets a meet record in the 120 yard high hurdles at 15.6 seconds and Neil Burroughs wins the 100 yard dash in 10.7 seconds. Jim Shultz wins the 800 in 2:06.2, edging the meet record by 0.2 and breaking his Rambler mark by 34.2 seconds. Greene places second in the 440 relay at 47.4 with Hogue Ebling Litterer Burroughs. The mile medley team Burroughs Litterer Hildebrand Debner is 3:57.9, while the mile relay trio Hildebrand Debner Ebling places third in 3:41.8 and Ebling Litterer Wendell Stuntz Hogue finish fifth in the 880 relay at 1:43. Hildebrand times 52.8 and 52.5 in medley and mile relays respectively.
Wartburg College in Waverly will host the State Large Group Music Contest this Saturday. Dr. Robert E. Lee reports 34 choruses, 14 bands, and one orchestra entered, with 10 Class B high schools, seven Class A, and two Class AA. Judges include Max Collins, John DeHaan, Allen Keller, John BeSalme, Ardy McIntosh, and F. E. Pon awe.
The Butler County Republican Yeomen's Organization will meet Thursday evening May 9 at 7 30 at Mrs Chuck Hardy's home in Clarksville. Auditor Vernon O Larsen will speak on A Study of Election Laws and Procedures. All Republican women are invited to attend and plans for a June Fun Day are to be discussed.
Maj. Gen. Paul A. Feyereisen was promoted to his second star at Fort Monmouth New Jersey with General Frank S. Besson Jr. presiding. He becomes project manager of Mallard Communications Project and Deputy Commander General for Tactical Communication Systems in Electronics. Mallard includes the United Kingdom Canada and Australia. Feyereisen is son of the late John P. Feyereisen and Grace Leech and uncle to Catherine and M Magdalene. He has four children and his eldest son attends West Point.
Russell Kock four year old son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Kock underwent surgery last week at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.
Three individuals were confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Wilmar on Sunday. The confirmands are Steven Van Dyke of Greene with parents Henry and Mrs. Van Dyke, Donita Kruse of Bristow with Bill and Mrs. Kruse, and Debra Drakle of Bristow with Junior and Mrs. Dralle.
A fat steer contest was added to the Big Four Fair at Nashua with steers judged by price for entries of 1000 pounds or more. An entry fee of $5 covers any steer brought that day. The event runs Labor Day Monday September 2 open to residents of Butler Chickasaw Floyd and Bremer counties. Russell J. Perry of Upington, volunteer county savings bonds chairman, stated March sales of Series E and H Savings Bonds and Freedom Shares in Butler county were 38882 dollars, totaling 128621 dollars for 16 percent of the 1968 quota. Van Buren leads with 45 percent, Scott county at 43 percent. statewide three month total 26,218,054 dollars for 24 percent of the quota. May first marks the 27th anniversary of Series E bond sales and the first anniversary of Freedom Shares sales.
Nearly 900 voters cast ballots as a board backed bond proposals for additions to both the high and elementary schools, approved 581 to 309 with 8 spoiled ballots, and a bus barn measure passed 559 to 314. Rites pending for John O'Brien Sr. who died this morning at Charles City.
Fifty eight Scouts, including five Greene youths, were named Eagle at a Winnebago Council recognition ceremony Sunday at the Mason City Library. Honorees from Greene were Lyle Williamson Harrison Bone Larry Lester Jeffrey Dralle and Gregory Dralle. The class was sponsored by Allin W. Dakin administrator dean of the State University of Iowa and former scout who was the council's first Eagle.
Steve Stark eleven year old son of Mr and Mrs Harold Stark of Packard sustained severe skin lacerations on his left arm and stomach late Saturday when he was dragged under a moving anhydrous tank. The tractor was driven by his father at the Packard Elevator and the boy became caught while attempting to catch a ride on the tongue. He was admitted to hospital where a number of stitches were required to close the wounds.
Des Moines couple Dr and Mrs E B Grossmann Jr celebrate the birth of son Daniel William on Friday April 19 weighing 6 pounds 9 ounces. He joins brothers Michael age 4 and Paul age 3. Grandparents are Sr of Orange City and Mrs William S Johnson of Greene.
Mrs. V. J. Tatum fractured two bones in her right wrist after slipping while mowing the lawn around noon Tuesday. The injury was treated locally with rest and follow up as advised by her physician.
In Rochester Minnesota on Monday Albert Barth was admitted to the Methodist Hospital where he is undergoing tests.
Bruce K. Roeder of Charles City pleaded guilty to nighttime larceny in district court on April 22. Judge L. E. Plummer imposed a 10 year sentence in the men's reformatory, suspended it, and placed Roeder on parole through the State Board of Parole. He was accused of stealing tires from a Texaco Station in Greene in 1967. Floyd Virgil Brocka, Greene, pleaded not guilty to failing to report a personal injury accident and was found not guilty.
Final standings show Kirospassase at 43 21, Chevelle AL 28, B and W 36 28, John Deere 2544 38 percent, PAG at 0 0, Blum's Grinding 234 41 percent, B and W 4, John Deere 0. The list reflects scores and percentages from Monday night competition.
The Ramblers defeated the Sheffield Wildcats 9 to 5 as Greene earned the win. Key swings came from Nettleton Landers and Johnson with multiple hits, while Landers tripled in the 4th and Dougs Trees added a separate hit. The win sets up a 2:30 p.m. meeting with Sheffield in the sectional tournament at Sheffield.
Dale Ver Plank and Mrs John Heinz are welcomed as new residents at the Clark Rest Home. They join the facility's community with plans to settle in and participate in local activities and social events. The move marks a small step in expanding the home's resident roster and community engagement.
Eleven winners were chosen at the first all Iowa Amateur Art Show and Program for Adults held at the University of Northern Iowa on April 20. The Best of Show went to Esther Leffert for The Old Tipple, with Blanche Mather among Award of Merit recipients for Wiest Mill.

The event showcased Consolidated Foods new ultra modern warehouse in Mason City valued at about one and a half million dollars.
