About 100 leaders from the Cedar District completed ten hours of training for the revised Girl Scout program set to start in September 1963. The session was held in Charles City with Greene district attendees led by Mesdames William Astor Ralph Litterer John Hamilton Don McBurmey Lorence Roberts and Vernon Rottler.
In Charles City, Charles Hurd was admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital on Saturday morning for ongoing treatment.
More than 400 members of The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary are expected at the Third District Spring Conference in Tama on Monday April 29. The district spans Benton Blackhawk Bremer Butler Franklin Grundy Hardin Marshall Tama and Wright counties. Ray Formanek district commander will preside and Mrs Dale S Baird district president will run the auxiliary meetings. Registrations start at 8 45 a m with Legion sessions at the American Legion Hall and Auxiliary sessions at Tama Methodist Church.

Greene Community Schools music instructors announce the final formal concert of the year by the high school groups on Wednesday May 1 at 7 45 p m. The girls glee club mixed chorus and high school concert band directed by Glenda Landsgaard and Ray Holtz perform selections ahead of the state contest on May 4. The concert features Jubilee March Overture in E flat and a trumpet trio with Kingery Pooley Ott plus The Three Jets and Coleman Stomp Mr Lucky. Public invited. State Solo Ensemble Contest in Eldora Friday and Saturday. Greene High School Stage Band plays for Rockwell Swaledale Prom Saturday evening.
The Butler County Council of Republican Women will hold their spring meeting Friday April 26 at 1 30 p m at the Aplington Am vets Hall. Mrs H M Kuenstling a Waterloo military instructor will give a hat making demonstration and show some of her hats.
New residents Mr. and Mrs. James R. Neessen of Grundy Center welcomed a daughter named Kathy Sue born Tuesday April 16 at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo. The infant weighed 7 pounds 4% ounces. Mrs Neessen is former Carol Deines daughter of Rev and Mrs I J Deines.
Mr and Mrs Wilson Kay hear from their son Rollin that the U S S Saratoga passed the Rock of Gibraltar on April 7 en route to Palermo Sicily to relieve the U S S Roosevelt The ship will stay in port about four days then return to sea next stopping in France
Butler County Fair adds a 4-H and FFA junior horse and pony show for county members only. Enrollment due May 1, 1963, at the county extension office. Show at 2 00 p m on August 1, 1963 with pony classes suckling colts to aged ponies and horse classes suckling colts to aged horses. Four game events approved include obstacle flag rescue and potato races.
Aaron and (Mrs.) Jewell host an open house at their rural Iowa farm for 110 Iowa college students from 35 countries attending the Iowa Farm Women's International Student Weekend April 26 to 28. Guest Kunle Adejumo, 26, Nigeria, history and English major at Ellsworth College, will meet visitors. Another host, G B Eckles of Aplington, welcomes Prashern Vadklinhom of Thailand, student at State College of Iowa Cedar Falls.
The senior class presents the play Do You Trust Your Boyfriend on Tuesday evening April 30 at 8 o'clock in the high school auditorium. Directed by Mrs. John Gustafson. Cast includes Karyn Tindall Fudy Klunder Sara Green Barbara Ray Philip Mead Ferrol Senne Steve Mead Dan McBurmey Dianne DeBerg and Marvin Alexander.
Infant Bret Joel Siemens, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Siemens, was baptized at First Presbyterian Church services on Sunday April 14. Grandfather Valeris Taylor assisted in the service.
Fifty four Cub Scouts hiked through the Winnebago Scout Camp near Marbie Rock on Saturday. Chaperones Harrison Bone Vern Gard and Harold Schoenfeld accompanied the group and the boys carried sack lunches for noon.
Six South American farmers will visit Iowa farms this summer with Butler County families hosting for one month each. The project is part of a National Farmers Union program with the AID to bring 75 farmers to the United States to learn about advanced farming methods. Bolivian guests Leonica Torrico and Hugo Poma Gomez will stay with hosts Hugh Scallon in Ackley, Bob Feltus in Allison, and Ed Arends in Clarksville. A county host committee led by Kay Connelly and Ed Arends seeks more host families. contact Ed Arends to apply. Final plans set at a May 1 meeting in Allison at the Extension Office.
Marine Major Dale E. Shatzer of Greene Iowa, son of Mr and Mrs Clarence I Shatzer, participated in recent training at the Marine Corps Base Twentynine Palms California. The program demonstrated helicopter borne troops capabilities against aggressor forces.
National Library Week is observed this week with the theme Read The Fifth Freedom Enjoy It. The program aims to inform inspire and involve the public about libraries values and accessibility. It notes reading habits are shaped by schools homes and the surrounding world and encourages local libraries to contribute and improve.

Iowa will begin its Freedom Bond Drive on May 1 to mark the 22nd anniversary of Series E bonds and run through July 4. John Mc Whirter of Allison heads the county savings bonds drive. Iowa sales surpassed last year for the third straight month, with March state sales at $10,455,945 and a three month total of $35,941,757, or 31 percent of the 1983 goal. Butler County March sales reached $96,556, lifting its three month total to $301,206, 33 percent of its 1963 quota.
Butler County 4-H members and leaders totaling 66 will attend Career Day at Iowa State University on May 3. The program includes open house tours, leadership conference, seminars, Cyclone Review, and Stars Over Veishea to acquaint members with university facilities and the role of education and research in society. Wayne Hartman, after six months in West Berlin, Germany, spends two weeks with his wife relatives and friends in Greene and nearby areas. His wife will join him at Fort Riley Kansas when the furlough ends.
Will Stabe was released Tuesday evening from St. Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota after a week of treatment. He is now at home recovering.
Week end visitors included Mr and Mrs Frank Gales of Sioux City and Mr and Mrs Richard Fer and Richard Jr of Huntsville Alabama staying with Will Stabenow.
Jerry Frey stationed with the Navy at Lammore California arrived last weekend to spend thirty days with his mother Mrs Mollie Frey.
Final standings from the Wednesday Night Rollers show Chevy II Rollers and Dean's Radio and TV leading into a six game bowl-off for overall victory. Warren Ebling earned the most improved bowler award with a 20 pin gain. Dean's Radio and TV posted high team series 2727 and high single game 964. Individual highs include Elmer Stock 662 in series and John Stock 264 in a game. Also covered are the Friday Afternoon Town and Country standings with O'Brien Standard and Rushmore Life atop, plus high scores by Sam Sneed, Charles Starkweather, Jim Knapp, Jim McLennan, and Bob Teeple.

Change Times Florian Rutz, depot agent, said that effective next Sunday April 28 the Northbound Rocket will pass Greene at 4 27 a m and the Southbound Rocket will pass Greene at 7 45 p m.
Harold Miller will attend a coaching conference on April 39 May 2 at Camp Wesley Woods Indianola Iowa. The event theme Foundations of Christian Teaching will be led by the General Board of Education of the Methodist Church with Iowa attendees preparing to teach in district schools next fall.
The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts baseball game season starts Saturday at 9:00 a.m. at the high school baseball field with youth teams taking the field under local supervision and community support.
Mr. and Mrs. M. K. Sperry are feted at an Open House Sunday April 28 from 2 to 5 PM at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James H Graven. They plan to move to 1709 Walnut Mountain View California by May 1 after 25 years in Greene. Sperry oversaw Greene High School for 15 years before joining the insurance field in 1953. Active in civic groups church and fraternal orders. All are invited.
Mrs. W. E. Griner reports that Greene collected 212.24 in the Easter seals sale. Funds aid the State Foundation for Crippled Children, supporting Camp Sunnyside near Des Moines and clinics for crippled children across the state.
