The R Edition notes an unusual Easter caller, a blue heron on Richard Menken’s lawn. It appeared cold and easy to catch, then after fish scraps from Bob Butts of Marshalltown and a sun bath, it flew away around 4 pm heading south. The column also muses about long life taxes and Iowa legislation.
Dale Rover of Greene faces speeding charges with an 8.00 dollar fine and 54.00 dollars in costs. Harold Shultz of Greene is cited for speeding with 6.00 dollars in fines and 4.00 dollars in costs.
The Greene Ramblers finished third at the Osage Invitational with St Ansgar and Osage ahead. Eldred Kingery won the 180 yard low hurdles. medley relay led by Gary Rattler also won. In Nashua practice meet Greene took multiple top spots including Kingery 1st in 100 and Clapham 2nd, and Burke in relays. Dickinson Relays at Cedar Falls this Saturday.
Gary Charles Schaeffer and Oscar Randall Jr signed statements with Floyd County Sheriff admitting to break‑ins at Powersville Grocery and other local stores on Thursday last week. Ronald Bonwell and a 16 year old were charged with concealing stolen property. bonds set. Police recovered 37 liquor bottles from a farm east of Charles City and from a hollow tree stump and nearby pond.
Mrs. Charles Hurd 85 died Tuesday at her Greene home after a long life in Floyd County and Greene area. Born 1877 in Floyd County, she married Charles Hurd in 1907. Survived by husband, two daughters, two sons, twelve grandchildren, one brother and several nieces. Funeral at St Marys Church Thursday 10 AM, Rev Joseph Murphy officiating. burial in St Marys Cemetery. Rosary Wednesday 8 PM at Williams Mortuary.
Ruth Ann Winemiller and Daryl R Fischer are awarded Dr Salsbury Laboratories scholarships for children of employees. Each will receive 2000 over four years. Ruth Ann attends State College of Iowa Cedar Falls majoring in home economics. Daryl enrolls at Iowa State University Ames studying mathematics and science.
Mrs Marvin Chapman was discharged last week from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after undergoing surgery.
McPherson College Trombone Quartet performs a sacred music program at Greene Church of the Brethren Sunday April 21 at 7 30 p m with a Monday stop at Greene Community High School The group features Merlin Dresher Warren Harden Larry Kitzel and Merlin Grady directed by McPherson College admissions head Guy Hayes The April 21 28 tour will visit ten communities in Iowa Minnesota and Nebraska.
The Butler County Historical Society building will open to visitors on Thursdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m beginning April 18. Appointments with Mrs. George Feltus in Allison can be made by calling 5051.

Mrs Gladys Miller of Des Moines, formerly Greene, underwent heart surgery and the amputation of two toes at University Hospitals in Town City on April 3. She remains hospitalized.
The Ramblers lost to Sheffield 5 2 as Sheffield scored all runs in the first inning. Greene had seven hits led by Barth Spratt and Fischer. Ott finished with no more runs allowed, and Greene later beat Sheffield 7 5 with strong batting from Marsh Barth Spratt and Fischer. Greene hosts Rockford Thursday in the Corn Bowl Conference Tournament opener seeking a third straight title.
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Van Vlack 79 were held at Kaiser-Carson Funeral Home in Waverly. A former Butler County Recorder from 1930 to 1956 she lived in Waterloo the last six years and died after a Mercy Hospital stay. Survivors include ten children twenty three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Burial followed at Riverside Cemetery Shell Rock.
The senior class and sponsors plan a sightseeing trip to Minneapolis this weekend. Sixty seniors will ride the train at 3 52 a m Friday and return Saturday at 8 13 p m with Mr and Mrs V J Tatum Miss Nancy Mitchell Mrs Helene Boller and Taverne Kehoe accompanying. They will attend the Ice Capades and tours including the Art Museum.

Mr and Mrs Herman Stubbe and Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh traveled to Omaha Monday to visit their sons Dan and Douglas who have completed ten weeks of Navy basic training in San Diego California They will take a 14 day leave before reassignment Dan heads to Memphis Tennessee for aviation sonar training and Douglas to Pensacola Florida for a communications school.
The common stock of United Utilities, Inc. was listed on the New York Stock Exchange on Wednesday of last week. United Utilities owns the common stocks of 14 operating telephone companies including United Telephone Company of Iowa at Newton. United Telephone operates 13 exchanges that serve 67 communities. Listed on the exchange were 5,364,238 shares of common stock that previously was traded in the over the counter market.
The May Term of the District Court will convene on May 6 1963 with Hon L E Plummer of Northwood Iowa presiding. Trial jurors drawn by the Commission will report May 13 1963 at 10 00 A M. Clerk District Court lists include Aldon Township and Beever Bennedette Butler Coldwater Fremont Madison Monroe Harm Abben Pittsford Shell Rock West Point townships with jurors names from each.
Mrs Zoa Miller entered Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo on Monday and underwent cataract removal on Tuesday morning, according to the report.
Greene High School inaugurated girls track this spring as 22 athletes competed in Plainfield where Ramblerette coach Kenneth Sutton saw Greene win more seconds and thirds. Marty Stuntz tied for first in the 60 yard hurdles at 9.9 as Barb Allison led the sprints and relays with multiple top finishes including 12.6 in the 100 yard dash and 29.0 in the 220 yard run.
Ruth Ellen Vorhes of Allison pled guilty in Dean Wiegmanns Court to expired license plates and paid a total fine of five dollars plus four dollars costs. Frank Newton McKean faced nighttime speeding charges in Wiegmanns Court and paid ten dollars in fines with four dollars costs.
The Greene Community School plans changes for 1963 64 with resignations from eight teachers including Hitchens Brenken Hardy Beard Harken Black Smith Mitchell and others.New hires include Whiteside Burgess Wiens Reint Ernst with vacancies listed at midwest colleges and LSE Employment Services. Deadline for resignations was April 15 with professional exceptions to June 1.
Butler County 4-H clubs support the International Farm Youth Exchange program promoting cross country understanding. Since 1948 over 3,000 U S youth and 63 countries have joined the program. Iowa delegates to Norway Brazil Sweden Australia India Peru Turkey the Philippines and Ireland in 1962. Iowa hosted exchangees from Switzerland Luxembourg Poland Ceylon India Chile Wales Northern Ireland and Finland. Contributions total 88 dollars with June 12 1963 submission deadline.

Two senior Greene girls Dianne De Berg and Connie Foster were selected to represent Greene at the district posture contest in Mason City next Sunday. Alternates Renee Hagarty and Joyce Kelly join eleven nominees chosen by the faculty on the basis of body balance and spinal alignment by Dr. Truitt, who sponsors them. If a winner at Mason City qualifies to compete for the Iowa Posture Queen title in Des Moines on May 4.

Chris Rutz son of Mr and Mrs Florian Rutz returned home last Wednesday from Mercy Hospital Mason City after surgery and treatment for an eye injury.

Larry Williamson H. M. 3 arrived Saturday evening for a two week leave to his mother Mrs Leora Williamson. He has served twenty seven months at Kota Spain.
New residents welcome: Mr and Mrs Bill Ziebell of Chatfield Minnesota announce the birth of daughter Lisa Ray on Saturday April 13 weighing 8 pounds 12 ounces. Mrs Ziebell is former Pat Ray. Ronald Bloom and Bar bara Kyle welcome a daughter born at Ida Grove hospital on Friday April 12 weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces. Charles Davis of Kansas City and his wife welcome a daughter named Kristine Mae born Tuesday April 16. Charles is son of Darrell and the late Jan Fletcher and Greene roots are noted for Mrs Davis.
