Mr and Mrs Draper Spratt of Waverly announce the birth of a son Timothy Richard in the Waverly hospital on April 10. The baby weighed pounds. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs R T Spratt of Greene and Mr and Mrs Albert Hoins of Waverly.
Greene attendee Jane Voigts from Wartburg College participated in the 16th annual Washington D C Seminar for Lutheran Students. The event offered collegians and seminarians a close view of the federal government with 161 participants in attendance.
A junior high dance will be held in the school lunchroom on Friday evening April 23 from 7 30 to 10 00 o clock. Sponsors are Mr Helm Mrs Barnhart Mr Eimers and Mrs Becker.
Coming events list Greene High School teams schedule for the coming week includes Wednesday boys track at Dumont and Thursday baseball at Allison with girls tennis at Neumann Mason City. Friday features Comet Relays at Charles City. Monday hosts Corn Bowl Conference Track Meet at Rockford while Tuesday begins sectional baseball at Allison and girls tennis with Neumann of Mason City.
Funeral and burial services for Elmer McRoberts a Greene resident were held April 7 in LeRoy Minnesota correcting an earlier Rochester date. He was the son of Samuel and Mrs McRoberts. Survivors include his wife two sons Claire of Rochester and Lyle of LeRoy one daughter Mrs Doris Johnson of LeRoy a brother Irvin McRoberts and several grandchildren.
Vernon O. Larsen Butler County Auditor lists the 1964 taxes payable in 1965 across 64 levies. The summary shows fund allocations for weed eradication, tuberculosis, voting machines, mental health, fair ground, Bangs disease, township funds, conservation, service compensation, soldier's relief, extension district, road clearing, court expense, education, state institutions, poor fund, county general, corporations, secondary road, and school districts with specific dollar amounts and percentages. Total funds sum to 2 905 944.61.
NIAD Business & Industry Committee led by Bill Koebler seeks factual data on area communities for an NIAD Industrial Brochure. April 26 Mason City meeting invites county representatives to submit details. A 1960 75 economic base study forecasts a 2000 job loss if trends persist. A related education study “Public Education in NIAD” by ISU Extension is released this week with copies available.
High school music departments stage a pre contest concert Tuesday April 27 at 7 45 pm in the high school auditorium. The concert band and mixed chorus perform contest numbers including North Sea Overture Rhythm of the Winds Minuteman March and Night and Day Begin the Beguine with new arrangements. Madrigal group sings two 16th century pieces Hard by a Fountain and The Cricket.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club opens for golf next Sunday April 25. All members to report for cleanup at 8:00 a.m. Bring a rake and shovel.
Vern Gard announces that Jerry Fischer son of Mr and Mrs Wayne Fischer has been accepted for two summer science institute scholarships for secondary students. Jerry, a Greene Community School junior, is active in music athletics and student council. Scholarships come from Austin Teay State College Clarksville Tennessee and Junior Engineers Summer Science Institute at Lamar Technical Institute Beaumont Texas.
Mr and Mrs Linus Sehrage welcomed a daughter named Kathy Denise born Wednesday April 14 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. The infant weighed 6 pounds 13 ounces.
A May 1 postmark deadline has been set for receipt of approved farm pond Cooperative Stocking Agreements by the State Conservation Commission. Ponds must be at least half an acre, fenced to keep livestock out, eight feet deep at spillway with an adequate overflow, and free of fish species. Contact your local Conservation Officer to arrange an inspection and approval.
The Cub Scout pack will meet on Wednesday evening April 28 at 7 30 at the elementary school. The final pack meeting of the season is set for Wednesday evening May 19.
Philip A. Bergan of Decorah faced a charge of entering a through highway without stopping and paid a total of fourteen dollars. F R Rutz of Greene was charged with intoxication on the street and paid nineteen dollars and sixty cents in fines and costs.
Dr Rathel B Kerr of Dr Salsbury’s Laboratories visits Greene as part of the Visiting Scientist Program on Thursday April 29. He heads development research at his lab with interests in parasitology pharmacology and nutrition. Kerr holds MS from Washington University and ScD from Johnson University. He belongs to the American Society of Parasitologists the American Society of Tropical Medicine the American Microscopical Society and the Iowa Academy of Science. Students will see experiments demonstrations and informal chats with scientists and teachers.
Iowa recreational boaters must have a Coast Guard approved lifesaving device for each person aboard. Devices with kapok or fibrous glass fillings must be encased in sealed plastic bags to meet regulations effective January 1, 1963. The State Conservation Commission urges checking gear for the 1965 boating season and notes buoyancy concerns if plastic encasing fails.
The National Defense Education Act funded summer institute will allow a scholar to study French language culture and history at Coe College in Cedar Rapids during the summer of 1963. An instructor from a high school in Cedar Rapids will supervise the program and scholarship.
Jerry Eimers reports a total of $135.00 was collected toward purchasing new basketball suits for the Ramblers at the fun night held Monday. The Ramblerettes were upset by merchants 44 to 31, blaming laughs and glare from bald opponents and wigs for their poor showing.
The scholarship awards committee at Town State University in Ames selected six incoming freshmen from about 1,000 applicants. Barnett, son of Mrs Ina Barnett, received one of the scholarships, with awards of 100 and 345 dollars funded by student fees, the alumni achievement fund, and university endowment.
Mrs. Robert Teepie and her son Michael moved from the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs Clarence Teepie, to join her husband. Radioman Third Class Robert Garrison, from Phillipsburg New Jersey, has served nine years in the Navy and will be stationed in Guam for three years.
Mr and Mrsust Grendler attended the funeral of Bert Grendler, 67, brother of Mr Grendler, in the Cathedr 2 on Tuesday morning. He leaves a son, Father Albert Grendler of Le Mars, four daughters and four sisters. A Nic Pherson College drama group will present BECKET at the Church of no Brethren on Monday April 26 at 7230 pm with cast from McPherson Kansas Denver Colorado and Iowa. Loren Reyher will direct. a free will offering will be collected.
Greene Ramblers swept opening contests defeating Allison Trojans 3 to 1 and Charles City S C 4 to 0. Mark Ott pitched superbly in both games with strong defense and timely hits led by Jim Drake and Steve Clapham. Ramblers prepare for sectional tourney at Allison April 28 and finals May 8.
Alvin Landers has returned home from Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City after several weeks of treatment for a heart condition.
Butler County plans a major road resurfacing with 88 203 tons of crushed stone awarded to Greene Limestone Co for 131188.61 dollars. A second contract for widening the Sinclair bridge goes to Brennan Construction Co for 17335 dollars. Crews labor seven days a week to fix drainage and road damage from a harsh winter and spring amid persistent rain.
Mrs Charles Price was taken to Flovrd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Saturday where she is undergoing treatment.
Butler County farmers had 1,252,377 bushels of 1964 crop corn under price support loans through February. County Chairman Herman Stubbe of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation County Committee reported the figure, compared with 1,392,631 bushels for 1963. National totals show 1964 corn under price support at about 200.6 million bushels through February, with 356.2 million for 1964 and 458.4 million for 1963 through February. Other 1964 county crops under support through February include oats 20,990 bushels and soybeans 29,772 bushels.
