Area Girls Win REC Trip to The Nation's Capitol

Debbie Hart of Allison and Barbara Kingery of Greene won the 1967 Town Rural Electric Youth Tour contest and will represent Butler County REC in the Washington DC trip in June. They will travel by chartered plane June 11 from Des Moines for a week of tours of national landmarks and government in action, with about 90 Iowa youth attending.

The Iowa State Tax Commission reports Butler County total sales tax paid to the state for the quarter ending December 31, 1966 at 101,378.91 with Greene leading at 22,463.05, Allison second, Parkersburg fourth, and other towns listed. Also includes consumer use tax of 822.48 and 239 new motor vehicles and trailers amounting to 14,079.75 in use tax.

Mrs Dean Edwards Discharged After Hospital Stay

Mrs Dean Edwards was released last Wednesday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City after surgery. She spent the rest of the week at her parents home, Mr and Mrs Roy Taylor.

School Principal Resigns to Take Iowa Falls Jr High Post

Vern Gard, longtime Greene Community School educator and administrator, resigns as principal of the Junior-Senior High School and accepts the principalship at Iowa Falls Junior High. He taught science history and math and served as counselor. The Gard family plans to move to Town Falls this summer.

School Bond Fails in Greene Community District

Voters in the Greene Community School district rejected two bond issues in a recent election held last Wednesday. The $367,000 construction and remodeling bond failed 389 to 285, with 42.2 percent support. A $21,000 bus garage bond passed 388 to 175, narrowly meeting the threshold. Under Iowa law, another bond issue cannot be called for six months.

Sharon Poppe of Mesa Arizona was selected from East Mesa Junior High School home economics to represent the 9th grade on KTAR TV in Phoenix. One girl from each Mesa junior high was chosen for poise personality and neatness reflecting grades 7 7 7. Pictures were taken for color TV appearance on April 1 on channel KTAR.

Greene housing survey finds adequate ownership, rental shortage noted

In Greene, 121 residents own homes and 23 do not, rural respondents show 91 owner and 43 renter. Two thirds say housing supply for purchase is adequate, 70 percent find prices comparable to similar towns. Major concern is insufficient good rental housing despite rental rates being similar to peers. Seventy-one percent see the housing inadequacy as a growth deterrent.

Richard Weaverling Rescued After Creek Drowning Incident

Richard Weaverling a 12 year old, son of Mr and Mrs Clarence Weaverling, nearly drowned when he slipped into a 7 to 8 foot hole in Coldwater creek south of Greene while playing with friends. Jim McLennan pulled him to safety after his son jumped in fully clothed to aid.

Eldo Rover 71 Dies At Greene Following Illness

Eldo Henry Rover 71 of Greene died Friday night after months of illness. Born November 17 1895 in Greene he was the son of Fred and Maria Rover. He married Minnie Becker in 1917 and farmed until 1948 before moving to town. Survived by his widow son Elvin two sisters and two granddaughters. Butler County previews a larger 1967 exposition with the county's sixth largest fair record. The five day event opens July 27 and closes July 31 with a carnival, a chance to win a car for merchants, and expanded 4-H shows. Cars Sideswipe on County Road Near Greene

Larry Schuknecht of Greene and Richard Rohwedder of Marble Rock collided on county road 20 miles northwest of Greene near a booster tower. Floyd County Sheriff L L Lane investigated. Both cars damaged: Schuknecht left rear fender $400 and Rohwedder left front fender and bumper $150.

Barn Fire Damages Landers Farm Near Greene

A large barn on the Landers farm owned by William Landers burned rapidly Sunday afternoon near Greene, destroying the barn and hay in flames. No livestock were lost, but a corn crib and cattle shed sustained damage. Loss estimated at about $8,000 with partial insurance coverage. Cause unknown. fire departments from Marble Rock and Greene extinguished the blaze by midnight.

Greene Community high shows at Sumner state music meet

Musicians from Greene Community High School competed at the Sumner state music contest last Saturday for Class B. Ratings were released this week. Division I soloists included Marcie Curtis Marilyn Walker Tim Kline Wendy Martzahn Wendell Stuntz Tim Heidenwirth. Division I ensembles listed many woodwind and brass groups. Division II participants included Marilyn Walker Marcie Curtis Karen Jewell and numerous instrumentalists across flutes clarinets saxophones horns cornets trombones and percussion.
