The Greene Fire Department responded to a grass fire at the Elmer Newmann farm near Parkard at 10:30 Tuesday morning. Firefighters extinguished the blaze before it reached structures, with no injuries reported.
Norman Mielke, Rambler head coach, announces the first dual meet will be Friday April 14 at Rockford. Butler County 4-H leaders and Youth Committee members will be honored at a banquet on Wednesday April 19. Roberta Reckler says the 6 45 p m event in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison celebrates five and ten year leadership awards and meritorious service awards with Vic Meyer as guest speaker from Commercial Bank and Trust Charles City. County Extension Council greetings and 4 H Trust Fund remarks will close the evening.
Mrs Fina Kirsch traveled from home on Tuesday to Santa Ana California to attend the funeral mass for her sister in law Mrs Oscar Wolf held at St Anne Church on Wednesday morning April 12 in Santa Ana California.
The final concert in a high school series features the concert band and mixed choir under Ray Holtz and Harold Blosser. Readings include Bach Air and Mozart Marriage of Figaro with a Thundercrest March.
Members of the city bowling association Bowled for Cancer bowled at Greene Lanes last week. From 189 entrants, $94.50 was raised. Prizes went to top scores with Mrs Galen Maxwell and Jim Morris posting high singles of 226 and 292 including handicap, while Mrs Galen Miller and Mr Morris posted top series of 581 and 740 including handicap.
Mrs. Charles Ray was admitted to Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Monday for treatment and care.
The Laymen Quartet of Holland will present a concert at the Presbyterian Church in Greene next Sunday evening April 16 at 8 00 oclock. Sponsored by the Merry Mixers Group the quartet organized in 1961 aims to blend listening pleasure with spiritual upliftment Members Orsen Kruger James Eruse Alvin Smit Arnold Ellen and pianist Ray Hinders will perform.
The Greene Commercial Club schedules a 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning coffee meeting at Dr. Truitt's office. Topics include summer promotion Dr's Appreciation Day Greene softball team July 4th observance and a candidate for Butler County Dairy Queen.
The North Central District of the Iowa Chiropractic Society held a Mason City meeting on Thursday electing Dr. Robert Breitback of Charles City as president and Dr. J. T. Truitt of Greene as vice president. Members viewed a demonstration of a new device for exercising and fitness programming.
The Butler District of the Winnebago Council hosted a World of Good Turns Scouts show at Shell Rock Saturday evening. Indian costumes and symbols crafted by each den earned the local Cub Scouts a blue ribbon.
Ninety one children registered for Story Hour at Greene Public Library over 19 weeks from October 29 to April 8. Average weekly attendance was 23 children, with Mrs. Robert Fischer in charge. Story Hour will resume in the fall for Greene area children.
The 1967 Butler County Honors Banquet honored Greene Seniors for 3.2 GPA or National Honor Society membership, with an Allison-Bristow High School hosted dinner and a program of musical numbers. The Greene combo performed Lullaby of Bird Land and Twilight Time.

Perry, volunteer county savings bonds chairman, reported February sales of Series E and H bonds in Butler County totaling $55,391, two-month county total $147,498 or 19 percent of the 1967 goal. Lyon County leads Iowa at 37 percent. February statewide sales reach $8,894,411 and two-month total $21,363,698 for 18 percent of the goal. New Freedom Shares go on sale May 1 yielding 4.74 percent to maturity in four and a half years.
Emil Martzahn underwent major surgery late Friday afternoon at Mercy Hospital in Waverly.
James Adelbert Clark 91 born August 8 1875 Waterloo died April 7 at Good Shepherd Geriatric Center Mason City. Survived by son Dale and granddaughter Nancy Johnson with two great grandchildren in New Castle Indiana. Funeral at Reid's Funeral Chapel Monday at 2 00 officiated by Rev Wayne Gjerde burial Rose Hill Cemetery.
An evening garden clinic in Allison on April 17 will cover spring prep plant selection and care for vegetables and flowers. Kay A. Connelly notes the event at 7 30 p.m. in the Farm Bureau Auditorium with Kermit Hildahl leading the topics. The Allison Garden Club and Butler County Extension Service sponsor.
Florian Rutz, Greene depot agent, announced the Rock Island Rocket made its last trips through Greene on Thursday night and Friday morning last week. The daily service linked Minneapolis and St. Louis and was the only passenger train through Greene.
Arthur Lovrien of Clarksville was elected to a six year term as Commissioner of the Butler County Soil Conservation District at the annual meeting and banquet held Tuesday April 5 at Shell Rock. He will succeed Bernard G. Wygle whose term expired. Wygle was appointed to complete the two years remaining of Adam Schwab's term. Lovrien has served as Assistant Commissioner for two years and farms 313 acres in Fremont Township.
The Iowa State Highway Commission announced closures of sections on Iowa 2, Iowa 14, and Iowa 294 to allow bridge repair over the Shell Rock River in Greene. Iowa 14 from Iowa 3 to Charles City will be closed to through traffic with no detour. reopening is planned for mid May. The Shell Rock bridge history notes a 1872 wooden structure, a 1902 steel rebuild, and relocation of spans, with local funding totaling 7000 dollars.
Donald Wunsch son of Mr and Mrs Paul Wunsch won the singles event in the Bristow cribbage tournament on Sunday with a score of 1199 His brother Martyn joined him to take third place in the doubles with a score of 2373
Kent Burroughs among 45 men and 21 women named head residents in the Men’s and Women’s Residence Association at Iowa State University in Ames. A total of 185 men and 85 women applied for the posts. on May 2 they will be assigned to dormitory houses for the 1967 68 year. Head residents receive room and board for their services.
Keith Sorenson and his wife welcomed a daughter named Gina Marie born April 3 weighing 5 pounds 7 ounces. Grandparents are Eugene Adams of Forest City and Calvin Sorenson of Crystal Lake. Great grandparents include Henry Rollefson and Eugene Adams Sr. of Forest City and John Azerski.
Vernon W. Gard among more than 4000 educators at the 72nd Annual Meeting of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools held April 2 to 6 at the Palmer House in Chicago. Gard, Greene Community High School principal, attended sessions on improving educational programs.
Mrs Fred Feldman was admitted to St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Waverly on Friday afternoon following a stroke.
Two road projects in Butler county are set for the April 25 letting by the Iowa State Highway Commission. Approved March 29, bids will cover a bridge on the Tama 14 bypass of Greene and 6.1 miles of grading and asphaltic concrete pavement on Tama 3 from the junction with Iowa 188 east to the Bremer county line.
The Greene Ramblers opened with a 5 to 0 win over Immaculate Conception of Charles City as three pitchers combined for a no run game. Lynn Gabe worked four innings, Larry Eimers two, Gary Johnson one, with Greene accumulating seven hits and five errors by Charles City.
Mr and Mrs George H Schafer of Bloomer received a live poinsettia on December 14 1966. Four months later the plant remains vividly red with all leaves blooming and undiminished in condition.
The Betterway Club bought books for local libraries. Life of Christ by Rembrandt was placed in Greene Public Library. Fashions from Ancient Egypt to the Present Day by Mila Contini was donated to the Dumont Library.
John Whitehead of Jacksonville Illinois will lead thirty deaf boys from six states on a Europe tour this summer. The group from Iowa Illinois Wisconsin Michigan Indiana and Missouri travels July 5 29 visiting London Brussels Cologne Bonn Heidelberg Basel Berne Interlaken Stresa Milan Venice Florence Rome La Spezia Nice Paris and more with guides at each stop. They depart Chicago July 5 flying via Air India to New York City for transatlantic crossing and return to Chicago July 29 by Air France.
The Heart Fund Drive collection reached 407.94 from Greene residents, topping last year by more than 50 dollars. Area captains named were Mrs. Max Dougherty, Mrs. Charles Ray, Mrs. Darrell Davis, and Mrs. Neal O'Brien.

Jerry Siemens returned home Monday from Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital where he received ten days of treatment.
Won prizes included Ronald Scott Lauber and Jeff Lindell for baseball and mitts, Mrs Herman Miller and William Bangs for radios, and Mrs Ronald Lauber for a stereo.
Henry F Debban 85 and his sister Ella L Debban 76 died in their Charles City home likely from natural causes. Both born in Butler County, Henry 1882 and Ella 1889, with survivors including three sisters and a brother. Funeral services were held at Hauser Funeral Home with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery Greene.
