P.T. A. Elects Officers After Wednesday Meeting

The Parent-Teacher Association met last Wednesday in the new elementary school auditorium. Miss Glenda Landsgaard led the musical program. Thomas Jensen to Attend University of South Dakota

Forty five high school teachers were chosen from about 1000 applicants for the fourth annual University of South Dakota Academic Year Institute for science and mathematics teachers. Dr. Charles M. Vaughn heads the Zoology department and directs the program. Stipends total 3000 dollars with additional allowances for dependents books and travel for the nine month institute from September 1961 to May 1962 funded by a 302100 dollar National Science Foundation grant. An extra summer program is available for some teachers. Membership of the 1961 62 Institute includes Thomas E. Jensen of Greene.

Mr Dagnachew Yilma of Ethiopia was the guest speaker at Sunday worship at First Presbyterian Church. A Dubuque University student, he discussed his homeland's population religion and problems. Senior Class Takes Tour Next Friday

Greene High School’s senior class will travel by Rock Island Rocket at 3 50 am Friday to Minneapolis Minnesota. They will tour the Star and Tribune Southdale Shopping Center the city see the Ice Follies and Cinerama then return on Saturday at 8 30 pm. Judge Henry N Graven to Retire After 17 Years on Bench

Federal Judge Henry N Graven 67 plans retirement after seventeen years on the Northern Iowa District Bench. He requests retirement August 31 while in good health and would accept a reduced workload, remaining available if needed. Appointed March 30 1944 by Franklin D Roosevelt after seven years as Towns 12th Judicial District judge. He earlier served as attorney general special assistant and Highway Commission attorney. He holds a BA from Minnesota 1921 and a Law Doctorate from Capital University.

Greene High Students Win In Poetry Contest

Four Greene High School students placed in a poetry contest sponsored by the Iowa Federation of Woman's Clubs. In the third district Daryl Fischer won first place, Carol Herman second, and Paul Burroughs with LaVon Johnson tied for third. Carol also earned second place in state, while LaVon received third and Paul earned a second honorable mention.

Rites Held for James McRoberts

James McRoberts age 68 formerly of Greene died suddenly Saturday at his Nashua area home from a heart attack. Survived by wife, mother Mrs Mary McRoberts Greene, three daughters Mrs Gordon Broadwater Byron MN Mrs Joe Broers Wellsville KS and Mrs Delmar Hendrickson Chicago IL seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also survived by brothers John Ira Greene and Harold Waterloo and sister Mrs Paul Shook Plainfield. Preceded in death by son J Burton in 1957. Funeral 2:00 p m Tuesday at the Nashua Methodist Church.

The 1961 Crusade of the American Cancer Society starts Monday April 10 as Butler County volunteers visit homes to distribute educational leaflets. Funds will boost education, patient services, and cancer research. More than 508 volunteers are ready, with Mrs. Henie Uhlenhopp as Crusade chairman and Mrs. Zoa Miller as area six chairman.

Three Aredale Men Arrested in Greene

Three Aredale men Ronald James Worley Ted Gordon Miller and Thomas Freeman Homer were arrested in Greene Saturday on intoxication charges. They appeared in Justice of Peace Court in Allison and pleaded guilty. Each paid a $10 fine plus $4 costs and were released from the county jail.

Fire Destroys Barn and Crib on Glaspie Farm Near Marble Rock

A fire of unknown origin destroyed a barn and a double corn crib on the Robert Glaspie farm four miles east of Marble Rock on Monday afternoon. Marble Rock Fire Department arrived at 12 30 pm and Greene Fire Department joined at 1 00 pm to control the blaze and protect surrounding buildings. Hay and straw, one calf, 3000 bushels of corn and 50 bushels of seed beans in an overhead bin were lost, with half the corn under government seal. A chicken house was nearly destroyed and insurance coverage was reported to cover most losses.
