Greene High seniors trip to Minneapolis on weekend outing

The Greene High School senior class traveled by train to Minneapolis on Friday April 6. They toured the city by bus, dined at a shopping center, attended the Ice Follies, and spent Saturday morning shopping. Chaperones included Mr. and Mrs. V. J. Larceny Charge Plea by John Skinner in Dumont Firecracker Theft

John Franklin Skinner aged 18 of Sheffield Iowa pleaded guilty in District Court on Friday April 6 to larceny under twenty dollars for stealing firecrackers in Dumont last summer. He agreed to pay half the value. Judge Wild reduced the charge and sentenced him to thirty days in the Allison County jail.

Ipsen Accepted For Naval Officers Training At ISU

William “Bill” Ipsen son of Mr and Mrs Harry Ipsen has been accepted into the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps program at Iowa State University. The program provides free tuition books and fees for four years and $50 monthly for room board and clothing. Ipsen qualified through mental and physical exams and interviews and will receive a US Navy commission after earning his degree. He is a member of Greene High School’s 1962 graduating class.

Youths Admitted Breaking Into Tavern in Dumont

Three Iowa Falls youths under 18 were arrested after admitting break in at W Nestletons Tavern in Dumont on April 4. Police recovered beer and cigarettes stored in a house in Iowa Falls. Deputy Marvin Barth returned stolen goods to Allison. Suspects Donald Boyer 15 Arnold Johnson 17 and Kosta Bakas 16 will be brought to Juvenile Court in Hardin County.

Fines in J. P. Knight Court for unlawful parking

Raymond Bradford of Sumner and Clark Walsh of Charles City were fined $5.00 each with $4.00 costs for unlawful parking by the fire station and at Greene Locker respectively. Larry Walther of Greene paid $5.00 and $4.00 costs for no 1962 license plates. Gary Weichers of Greene was fined $10.00 and $4.00 costs for disturbing the peace.

Track schedule for season listed

Coach Jack Sandy announces the season track schedule including Osage Invitational on April 13, Iowa State Relays at Cedar Falls on April 21, Comet Relays at Charles City on April 27, Corn Bowl Relays at Osage on May 3, District Track Meet on May 12, and State Meet on May 26. A couple of duel meets may be added. Gary Rottler set a school record in the 880 yards at Iowa City on March 30 with 2 minutes 11.4 seconds. Eldred Kingery, Dallas Steere, Larry Blum, and Steve Clapham headline sprint relays, with Burroughs and Rottler among early season middle-distance standouts.

Greene student to attend Youth Traffic Safety Conference

Mike Jewell of Greene is appointed to attend a Youth Traffic Safety Conference called by Governor Norman Erbe at the Statehouse in Des Moines on Tuesday April 24. Kenneth Sutton of Greene is named as an adult observer. Jewell attends Greene Community High School. On May 15th the Nation will observe the 100th Anniversary of the United States Department of Agriculture. It was on May 15, 1862 that President Abraham Lincoln signed enabling legislation creating the Department.
