Three inductees were called to service in March and April. Clarence E. Karstens of Parkersburg was drafted as a volunteer. Larry W. Full of Alison and Robert D. Abbas of Parkersburg were called in April. One volunteer and four others reported for physical examination on April 3, 1963 at Fort Des Moines. The May call is for one man. Butler County Local Board will be closed all day April 18 for a clerk conference at Osage.

Nominated by Greene High School staff are Barbara Allison Jo Ann Baker Vae Brinkman Diane Cheney Gloria Day Connie Foster Re nee Hagarty Joyce Kelly Ruth Jepson and Marilyn Lindell. Two finalists will be chosen for district contest at Mason City on April 21 with banquet that evening and district winners announced. The Iowa Posture Queen will be chosen in Des Moines May 4, with possible attendance at the National Contest in St Louis in July.
A radiosonde sent by the Weather Bureau was found by Orville Stewart of Greene last Friday in a field between his farm and the Claire Starkweather farm. He turned it over to Greene Street Commissioner Wilford Griner for proper handling. The instrument, about 10 by 5 by 10 inches, measures temperature, pressure and moisture at various heights via a government balloon. After the balloon burst at about 17 miles, the unit descended by parachute. Finders are urged to take such devices to the Post Office for return to the weather station.
Lloyd C. Thomas 53 of Cedar Falls died Friday in Sartori Hospital from a heart condition. Born February 27 1910 in Greene he was married June 26 1932 to Marlys Kingery. He ran the Thomas dairy before moving to Cedar Falls in 1941 where he worked as a mechanic for Viking Pump. Surviving wife two sons Clayton Iowa City and Duane Cedar Falls mother of Greene two sisters Mrs Kenneth Rodman Clarksville and Mrs Retin Braillier Mountain Home AR a brother Ira Greene and four grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday April 9 at 1 30 p m at First Baptist Cedar Falls with Rev Wayne Gordon officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery Greene.
The Woman's Club holds an open meeting at the elementary school auditorium on Tuesday April 16 at 8 00 p m. The program Attainment in Medicine includes a film on Retarded Children. Guest speaker is Mrs J M Doms of Clarksville, a teacher at Butler County school for retarded children in New Hartford. Public is invited.
Eleven men assisted at the Ivan Schafer farm northeast of Greene on Monday afternoon. They prepared ground and seeded 37 acres of oats as Mr. Schafer has been ill. Helpers: Paul Butler, Harry Eliasen, Walter Hildebrand, Quentin Hildebrand, Vern Van Raden, Lawrence Silvey, Robert Kock, Fred Paul, John Eckhoff, George Krull, and Larry Krull. Neighbor ladies provided lunch and Vivian Kingery supplied tractor fuel.
Justice of Peace Dean Wiegmann handled several cases in Allison last week. Keith Bellinger of La Porte City pled guilty to petty larceny for attempting to take gas from Cities Service Station in Shell Rock and paid $10 fine plus costs after paying $2 for the gas. Hugo Ellerman of Cedar Falls arrested for intoxication and paid $100 fine plus $4 costs after pleading guilty. Jensen of Clarksville paid $10 plus $4 costs for stop sign violation. Brauhn of Waterloo paid $20 plus $4 costs for night time speeding. Bremer of Tripoli paid $15 plus $4 costs for stop sign violation.
Bernard G. Brunsma leaves St Marys Hospital Rochester Minnesota after major surgery on March 25 and goes home Saturday with health update from the facility and family.
John Eckhoff Robert Kock Quentin Hildebrand and Walter Hildebrand aided at the Fred Wirth farm Tuesday preparing ground and seeding 18 acres of oats. Wirth has been confined to his home with a heart condition for several weeks.
New residents Mr and Mrs Henry Kingery of Charles City welcomed daughter Michele Renee at Cedar Valley Hospital on Saturday April 6 weighing 6 pounds. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery of Greene. Lt and Mrs Paul Mather of San Bernardino, California welcomed daughter Diane Marie born April 5 weighing 7 pounds. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Barton Bonzer of Floyd and Mr and Mrs Eldred Mather of Greene. Mr and Mrs Gary McWilliams welcomed daughter Jayne Marie born March 36 weighing 6 pounds 2% ounces.
The Greene Industrial Development Association will hold a stockholders meeting next Monday evening April 15 at 7 30 at the Elementary School. All stockholders and others interested are invited to attend. Officers will be elected and there will be a tour of Temple Engineering.

Mrs May Thorpe 79 died last Monday at Clark Nursing Home from age related complications. Born August 19 1872 in Hazel Green, she came to Iowa as a child, lived near Clarksville, married Edward Thorpe May 27 1830, later moving to Greene. Survived by son Wal Greene two daughters Verme Drew Doris Cheney and Ampur Martzahn, one brother Noble Harv two sisters Maude and Alice Applegate, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral 2:00 today at Williams Mortuary with Rev G Frederick Butler officiating. Interment Rose Hill Cemetery. Williams Mortuary in charge.
Fight youths were received into membership by confirmation at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning. Confirmed were Jolene Kingery Lynnette Kingery Carol Litterer Dennis McRoberts Robert Raisty Yvonne Ruffridge Jean Shultz and Larry Tack.
The Greene Community School announces a Friday round-up at the Elementary Building on April 19 for the 1963 64 year. Children must be 5 by Sept 15 and birth certificates are needed. Last names A through MM register 9 to 11 30 a m and N through Z 1 to 3 30 p m. A $4 book rental and 90 cent milk fee per semester or $1 80 per year are due.
The last Story Hour of the season was held at the Greene Public Library on Saturday March 30. Easter treats were given to children and Easter stories and poems read. There were children registered and Mrs. Robert Fischer was in charge of the Story Hour.
The 4th annual mathematics contest sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America was held March 14 in five Butler County schools Clarksville Dumont New Hartford Greene and Parkers Greene. Greene won the team title with 108.25 points, Dumont followed with 78.75. Individual leader Janet Fiddick Greene scored 31.25, the best Greene has seen since entering the contest. Corwin Smith of Dumont earned 32 points and Arlene Brown noted as math instructor.
The Tae Greene Iowa post office adopted the Postal Service program for bargaining on grievances and working conditions under Executive Order 10988. Postmaster Curtis announced results from the national labor management election, noting local results: Clerks exclusive Local 11677 with United Federal Postal Clerks, and Rural exclusive National Rural Letter Carriers Assn State Assn.
Greene man Dale Bruns received acid burns to both eyes when a tractor battery exploded in his face last Wednesday. He is recuperating at home. Friday and Saturday laborers including Marvin Bruns Everett Squires Joe Squires Henry Bliss Marvin Hover Kenneth Rover Roger Lindell and Lester Rover prepared ground and seeded 44 acres of oats and shelled corn.

Jack Otto Brocka ten week old son of Mr and Mrs Melvin Brocka died Thursday evening at the family farm after a brief illness. Survived by parents three brothers Merlyn Dennis and Craig three sisters Ranae Mary Ann and Cynthia paternal grandmother Mrs Otto Brocka of Allison maternal grandmother Mrs Ann Robinson of Shell Rock and maternal grandfather Pete Green of Waterloo. Funeral Saturday at 2 pm at Williams Mortuary with Rev I J Denes officiating. Interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Patrick Dale McRoberts, son of Mr and Mrs Dale McRoberts, was baptized during Sunday worship at First Presbyterian Church with Elder Paul Cheney assisting.
Greene Ramblers open baseball season with an 3 2 victory over Tripoli in eight innings as Everding limits Greene to three hits and walks help fuel the scoring. Teeple, Myers and Poppe contribute key runs as Greeneey starts strong before tiring in the fifth. Next, Greene faces Clarksville in a Monday afternoon tilt at home.
Robert Joseph Turner a 15 year old from Charles City died in a car crash Sunday evening. He rode with 16 year old Douglas Franke who is hospitalized with neck injuries after their car struck a utility pole. Turner was born July 31, 1947 in Charles City and survived by his parents two brothers and two grandmothers. Funeral services are 2:00 at the Methodist Church in Charles City.
Charles E Grassley reports the Iowa Senate approved making the State Superintendent of Public Instruction an elective office by 26 to 24. House action pending, with three options on the table: direct superintendent election, district based board elections hiring the superintendent, or governor appointed board hiring the superintendent. Grassley notes rural dissatisfaction with the current unaccountable system and urges cross party support to advance a chosen plan this session.
