The editor argues a new gymnasium would relieve space by converting the current cafeteria into needed rooms and freeing the present gym for sports. It would host accredited physical education, support community events, and boost revenue from athletic contests to ease the taxpayers burden.
Dr. Paul F. Grendler, son of Mr and Mrs August Grendler, has been awarded a $7500 University of Wisconsin Madison fellowship for a year of research and writing. He is an assistant professor of renaissance history at the University of Toronto and will take a leave of absence. The Grendlers will move to Madison in September with their son Peter. Paul is a 1953 Greene Community School graduate.
Mr and Mrs Harry Ipsen and Mary spent the weekend in Chicago with Elmer and Mrs Ipsen. They attended the graduation review of William Ipsen at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. Bill will arrive home Friday for a two week leave before returning to Great Lakes for further schooling.
Greene Community School vocal students will perform solos in a recital next Tuesday evening April 11 at 8:00 in Room 11. Soloists include Carolyn Kehoe Karen Barnhart Janan Smith Nancy Tefft Larry Tack Tom Tindall Neal Burroughs and Tom Truitt.
Mr and Mrs Arvid Lindell and Mrs A I Lindell attended funeral services for Nan Lindquist at LeRoy Michigan on Sunday They returned home on Monday night
Mr and Mrs Russell Meyers came home Friday afternoon after a ten week winter vacation in Sarasota Florida They spent several days visiting Mr and Mrs George Whitson at Pompano Beach and also met White Sox rookie catcher Duane Josephson of New Hampton after a grapefruit league game.
Greene residents may voice views on a proposed addition and remodeling plan for Greene Junior Senior High School. Two sessions will be April 5 and April 7 at 8:00 p.m. in the high school gym, with voting on April 12 after discussion.
Deanna Lynn Peters Marty Joe Peters and Russell Allan Hillegas were baptized by Rev Wayne Gjerde at Sunday morning services in the Methodist Church. The infants are children of Mr and Mrs Larry L Peters and Mr and Mrs Robert Hillegas.
Tom Deakins, 84, of Marshalltown died Tuesday March 28. Born October 10, 1882, in Yackinville North Carolina, he lived on a Greene County farm before moving to Marshalltown. Survived by wife two daughters Mabel White Stanton California and Thelma Salem Oregon and son Clyde Denver. Funeral services were held in Marshalltown Friday afternoon with burial there.
The Greene Commercial Club banquet will be held tomorrow evening at the elementary school. Dr. J. T. Truitt said transportation will be provided for east of the river residents if the bridge is closed. He will keep his office open for riders. Banquet starts at 6:30 p.m. The Panics from Mason City will entertain.
Floyd County 4-H members chose eight new council members at the annual 4-H Convention on Monday evening March 27 at the Charles City Junior High. The eight voted into office for one year were Larry Tack Vicki Ewald Bill Brandau Cindy Johnson Maurice Johnson Barbara Kingery Dave Kock and Carol Heitz. Nearly 350 attendees heard talks by 15 candidates prepared an hour before. A. W. Fowler assisted with candidate activities.
Mrs Ella McEvoy 79 died unexpectedly at her Greene home on Sunday. Born October 28 1887 in Wadena she married Pete McEvoy of Rockwell in 1923 and they lived in Rockwell before 1926 moving to Greene to run Hesalroad Cream Station later McEvoy Produce. Burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery Rockwell with services at St Marys Church.
Jack Dudley, coach of girls' tennis, said fourteen players are practicing for the first match against Mason City Newman on Monday April 17. Team members include Ann Curtis, Juliene Nielsen, Valerie Ruiz, Yvonne Ruffridge, Marcia Kelly, Linda Wunsch, Audrey Marten, Lynette Shaffer, Vikki Kaiser, Sharon Osier, Becky Bellows, Frances Strain, Barbara Osier, and Lynnette Kingery. Gus Heidenwirth purchased the LeTourneau Westinghouse D-pull machine with a 12 yard Hancock self loading scraper. The unit is used mainly in conservation projects like building terraces and grass waterways and also for other dirt moving tasks.
Mr and Mrs Glenn E Ressler returned from a six weeks vacation to Florida visiting Orlando Bradenton Sarasota and other places of interest. They stayed with Ray and Mrs Garrison and attended the Art Festival at Winter Park.
The American Cancer Society launches its April Crusade with Crusade Coffees in Shell Rock Allison Clarksville and Dumont from March 28 to March 30. Volunteers viewed Points of Progress and collected Crusade materials as they prepare a countywide fund and education drive.
Jerry Siemens was admitted to Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Friday afternoon for observation and treatment.

Standard Oil low on No 1 diesel freight tank wagon with discount. Butler Grundy Farm Service low on anti freeze at 1 39 per gallon.
The first dance of the season will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on April U1. Tickets available via Lowell McWilliams or Darrell Davis.
The Greene Community School will close next Monday April 10 to allow teachers to attend the North Central District Iowa State Education Association convention in Mason City. Classes will resume Tuesday.
Rambler baseball coach Jerry Eimers announced the first spring game will be against Nora Springs here on Tuesday April 11. Fourteen boys reported for practices including eight returning lettermen with a lineup featuring Lynn Gabe to pitch and Jeff Draile catching.
Butler County saw hunting fishing and trapping license revenue total 16203.75 in the last licensing year, up from 12666.75. total licenses issued 4311, with 1168 combo, 1689 fishing, 1136 hunting licenses. Nonresident licenses raised additional funds. new licenses available at the recorder's office and local depositories.
The Greene Community School District holds a special election next Wednesday April 12 to vote on two bond issues. One proposes 367000 for a new gym and classroom additions plus remodeling of the high school. the other asks 21000 to build a school bus garage. All qualified voters can vote at the high school gym from noon to 7 PM CST.
The Greene Fire Department responded at 2 50 p m Saturday to a grass fire in the dry run behind St Mary’s Catholic Church.
The annual local instrumental music solo contest featured 77 high school band students performing solos judged by two judges. Students were reviewed for state contest eligibility with many earning state division I recommendations for the April 14 and 15 event in Sumner.
A 162.41 bushel per acre yield in 1966 won first place in Butler County Master Corn Growers Contest for Paul Kramer of Aredale. Kramer and other top producers from Butler Bremer and Franklin counties were honored at a March 30 awards banquet at Dreiersdale Restaurant in Hampton. Kramer received a plaque from Lloyd Bigler of Greene territory supervisor for Northrup King and Co. Lou Conn of Bristow was second with 145.0 bushels per acre and Karl Zimmerman of Aredale was third with 151.90. Paul Wente and Arlen Wente of near Waverly led the Northrup King sponsored Waverly contest with 157.56 and 151.30. Franklin county honorees were Carl Sailer 157.46 Max Sheppard 154.17 C. J. Sheppard 153.24.
James Roach aged 54 who managed the Plainfield elevator and the Nashua Grain and Milling Company died Saturday night at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at the Methodist Church in Plainfield.
Airman First Class Larry L. Brown, son of Lester C. Brown of Greene, has arrived for duty at Andrews AFB, Maryland. Brown, an air policeman, previously served at Kirtland AFB, New Mexico, and is assigned to the Military Airlift Command providing global airlift and related services. He is a Mason City High School graduate. His wife Carol is daughter of Mr and Mrs E A Pauley of Albuquerque New Mexico.
The Rambler golf team will meet Newman of Mason City on Thursday April 13 for the season opener. Coach Max Dougherty notes thirteen boys out for practice including five returnees Karl Sneed Dan Weyand Duane Ott Dick Lindell and Greg Drakle. Louis J. Meehlhause of Clear Lake will manage the Farmer's Co-operative Creamery Association in Greene replacing retired H P Geil. Meehlhause started April 1 after eight years at Sheffield and prior Clarksville dairy work. The couple will move to Greene when housing is ready. they have a daughter Mrs Lodge of Clarksville and a son Gary of Clear Lake. Geil led the Greene creamery for 15 years and will retire in Greene.
