Rollin Ray left Norfolk Virginia last week aboard the U S S Orion for a cruise of islands including Cuba. Drills aboard include rescuing men overboard refueling while in motion and fighting fires. State Health Department officials left containers with Mayor Calvin Kelly for residents to have well water tested. Citizens may obtain a container from town clerk Claire Curtis in Frodden building, free of charge, and mail it to the State Hygienic Laboratory in Iowa City for testing.

John Van Eschen was admitted to Cedar Valley hospital in Charles City on Thursday evening after suffering a heart attack.

James L. Agnew, 91, underwent major emergency surgery Saturday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City and is reported to be recovering satisfactorily.
Governor Norman Erbe announces a new identification emblem for state cars, a black outline map of Iowa on a gold field, to replace the old circular decal. It will appear sometime in May and will not replace the yellow shield for Iowa highway patrol cars. Officials say the emblem was chosen as a more positive, easily identified symbol. The state board of social welfare may cut aid to dependent children by about $6 per recipient before July 1 due to lack of legislative approval for a fund transfer. They ask legislators to move $350,000 from old age assistance funds not needed for that program.
The Iowa House passed a bill to raise the legal length for auto transports from 50 to 60 feet, also allowing farm equipment and boats to reach 60 feet. Iowa Safety Commissioner Carl Pesch opposed longer transports and higher speed limits, signaling opposition to both measures. Senate had already advanced a daytime truck speed limit increase from 50 to 60 mph on primary roads, with Patrol Chief David Herrick voicing objections and frustration over enforcement implications.
