A jumble of satirical opinions targets Khrushchev’s predictions, American farmers, rationing in Communist nations, Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, Roger Maris, and AL hitters. It laments bad weather delaying seed catalogs and mocks TV rookies with shared cynicism about public figures and sports stars.
Commercial Club members and all interested persons meet Thursday April 2 at 9:00 am at the Youth Center to plan a float for the North Iowa Band Festival at Mason City on June 19. The festival will be covered by two TV networks ensuring nationwide recognition. Attendees may share ideas and a coffee service will be provided.
Susie Next Leydig 95 died Tuesday March 27 at her daughter Mrs Rog er E Matson’s home in Selah Washington. Born and raised in Greene she married Jake Leydig there. They lived in Greene for years then moved to Spokane 40 years ago. Survivors include brothers Will and George Nixt, daughter Mrs Roger Matson, son Carl Leydig, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in Spokane.
Barbara Allison and Sandra Edwards received Division II ratings and certificates at the state speech contest in Cedar Rapids on Saturday March 31. Barbara delivered a humorous declamation I Like Men and Sandra performed Diary of Eve. The performances were at the Veterans Club on March 28.
Connie Schoenfeld and Barbara Crooks were chosen from Community School to represent Greene at the North Iowa Posture Contest in Mason City next Sunday. The event is sponsored annually by the chiropractic profession as part of the President's Youth Fitness program.
James Garfield Reed 80 died Friday at home in Greene after a lingering illness born February 7 1882 at Dumont son of James and Ellis Reed married Anna Helt February 23 1905 moved to Greene 22 years ago. Survived by wife four sons and seven daughters many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral Monday at Gospel Hall Church Hitesville with burial in church cemetery. Reid Hamilton Funeral Chapel arranged.

Greene Public Library schedules two more Story Hour sessions this spring on April 7 and 14. Easter stories and poems will be featured on these Saturdays. A total of 86 children registered for Story Hour this past year.
River level reached seventeen feet at the Greene site near the dam around noon last Thursday. Officials noted the crest stood about two feet above flood stage above the dam and twelve feet above normal conditions downstream. Local authorities monitored the crest and warned residents in flood-prone areas.

Paul Wunsch captured first place with a perfect 1210 across ten games at the cribbage tournament held Sunday afternoon at the Waverly Country Club. Mrs. Lyle Shultz took fourth and the ladies’ high prize. In doubles, Shultz and Pond won first, while Wunsch and Shultz took third. About 100 attendees, including Greene residents Harold Swant, James McLennan, Paul and Martyn Wunsch, and Stanley Pond.
In hospital Mrs Retta Dunning was admitted to the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City last Wednesday noon following a slight stroke.
State Conservation Commission urges boaters to ensure Coast Guard Iowa number display and passenger capacity rating on motorboats before use on state artificial lakes. Inspections for seaworthiness apply to all vessels and a registerable boat must show numbers while on water this year.
George Nathaniel Reed age 92 died Tuesday April 3 at Cedar Valley Hospital after a long illness. Born June 13 1869 in LaForgeville New York he married Kate Ludwig March 22 1891. Survivors include two sons four daughters six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 2 00 pm at Bethel Baptist Church with burial in Hillside Cemetery. Body lies in state at Reid Hamilton Funeral Chapel Marble Rock.
The event at Greene Community High School begins at 7 30 p m with an alumni versus high school girls basketball game followed by a trampoline exhibition by grade school students. The Commercial Club and High School faculty volleyball match closes the program with donations replacing admission to fund new girls basketball uniforms.
Greene High School junior Miss JoAnn Backer will attend Girls State at the State College of Iowa Cedar Falls. Sponsored by Unit 268 of the American Legion Auxiliary, she is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Backer and serves as class treasurer and a member of the annual staff and mixed chorus while taking an art correspondence course from the University of Nebraska.
Real estate dealer Dayton Mather announced the sale of the Alice Dolan house to buyer H. P. Geil. The transaction was disclosed as completed by the agent with no further details on price or date.
Marvin Albrecht faced a five dollar fine and four dollars costs for unlawful parking in front of a fire station. Harold Kopel of Marshalltown was cited for a stop sign violation with a five dollar fine and four dollars costs. Dale Edward Hesalroad was fined five dollars and nine dollars costs for passing on an intersection and five dollars and four dollars costs for refusing to show a license.
The 34th Iowa Association FFA annual convention will be held in Waterloo at the Dairy Cattle Congress auditorium from April 12 to 14. Over 2,000 FFA members and advisers from 200 vocational agriculture departments are expected, with 182 members from 60 chapters competing in final state contests. Richard C. Black, National FFA Secretary, will deliver the address as top winners are announced.
Lawrence A. Sogard Allison has been appointed Director of the Butler County Department of Social Welfare by the Butler County Board of Social Welfare, effective April 1, 1962. He succeeds Delila Amick who resigned last week after joining the county department in 1959 as a Public Welfare Worker.

The Greene Ramblers begin spring baseball at Clarksville next Monday April 9 with coach Jerry Eimers and Ken Sutton leading 20 hopefuls. Four lettermen return from last year’s team that reached the sub state finals, while Nile Myers declines to report. Starting positions will be decided after outdoor practice and competition for spots remains keen. Upcoming games include Clarksville April 9 and May 21 at Waverly, with a busy conference tournament in late April to May 1.
The Easter cantata The Mystery of Easter will be performed by a fifty voice choir directed by Mrs Emmett Busch. St James Church Allison hosts the concert Sunday evening April 8 with combined Lutheran choirs from Greene area and St John Lutheran Wilmar presents the same cantata Easter Sunday at 8 00 p m. Public invitation is extended to all in the community.

Bill Adams underwent surgery Monday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City, with doctors reporting the procedure completed successfully and recovery expected.
Mrs. Walter Kyle, chairwoman, announces that 105.25 has been collected for Easter Seals. Funds aid crippled children and include speech therapy this year.
The Butler County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its annual meeting Monday April 9 at 8:00 P M in Allison City Hall. Officers for the coming year will be elected and all chairmen are asked to submit their reports.
Mr and Mrs Roger Landers announce the birth of a daughter named Carla Kay on Monday April 2 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. The infant weighed 5 pounds 1/4 ounce at birth.
