Robert R. Bangs of Miami Florida has returned to his job with Eastern Airlines after six weeks convalescence from surgery at the Miami Beach Heart Institute on January 10. His parents Mr and Mrs William A Bangs of Greene spent a couple of weeks with the Bangs in Miami following the hospital release.
Luther Aurand of St. Paul Minnesota died Friday April 5. Born in Greene he was a local ball player for years. Survived by wife Ina two daughters Phyllis Griffin Cedar Falls and Carol Gray St. Paul a son Robert Hugo Minnesota two sisters Vern Gothard Loran Illinois and Jessie Ferry Clarksville 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Half-brother Earl Aurand died years ago. Funeral Monday at Listee and Wold Chapel St. Paul burial Acacia Park.
The Greene Community High School senior class toured Minneapolis on Friday and Saturday. Chaperones included Miss Mary Jane Waite and several couples plus Supt. V. J. Tatum. They visited KSTV TV, Southdale, the Ford plant and the Airport, saw Gone With the Wind at Cinnerama, then returned home after a day of free time.
About 1000 guests will gather June 1 at Electric Park Ballroom Waterloo to honor Iowa's Third District Congressman H R Gross marking twenty years in Washington. Senator John J Williams of Delaware will speak, introduced by Senator Jack Miller. Tickets cost 25 dollars per couple or 15 dollars for individuals with reservations by check to Salute to H R Gross Committee P O Box 426 Waterloo Iowa 50704.
The Greene Community School vocal music department will hold a spring concert in the high school auditorium on Wednesday evening April 17 at 8 00. The choir will sing sacred and secular pieces including songs from the Corn Bowl Conference Music Festival. A mixed ensemble will perform Sound of Music chorals and the Madrigal Singers contest selections. Larry Tack will present an original folk composition as a solo. Season tickets will be honored and tickets sold at the door.
The Butler County Association for Retarded Children reports 1294.77 raised in a county fund drive. Seventieth stay in county and 30 percent split between state and national groups to cover dues, convention fees, and scholarships for training workers with mentally retarded individuals. Local clubs and individuals listed as contributors.
The Greene Jaycees held a discussion on a proposed school bond issue and voted 10 in favor 5 against with one abstention to decide whether to go on record supporting the bond. They planned an opinion poll and noted future meetings in Sumner and Des Moines alongside views on presidential and gubernatorial candidates. A Brunsvold received the Jaycee Rudy pin for membership recruitment.
Eldon F. Peterson manager of the Farmers Incorporated Co op Society of Greene chats with John E. Fidam president of the Omaha Bank for Cooperatives during a managers conference in Omaha. Peterson attended with more than forty managers to discuss financial management with Bank officers and experts.
An organizational meeting to form a saddle club and drill team will be held at Aaron Jowell's home on Friday evening April 19 at 8 00 p m. People of all ages are urged to attend this meeting if interested in joining.
Two local churches plan a Sunrise Worship Service at 6:00 a.m. at the athletic field with Rev. Donald Welsh and Rev. Paul Metzger delivering messages. Youths will read scripture and lead responses. participants include Russell Landers Larry Eimers Harrison Bone Valerie Starkweather. An Easter breakfast will follow at the Presbyterian Church dining room from 7:00 to 8:15 a.m. for all adults of both congregations.
Malinda Jacobs four died suddenly Tuesday afternoon at Floyd County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Jacobs and is survived by her parents grandparents Mr and Mrs P A Jacobs Greene and Mr and Mrs Percy Roseberry Portland Oregon two brothers David and Jeffrey at home a great grandmother Mrs Ella Jacobs Clarksville and a great grandfather Herman Voigts Allison Funeral services are pending with Reid's Funeral Chapel.
Hancock Soil Conservation District sponsors a minimum tillage meeting to help farmers who missed Allison join. The event is Monday evening April 15 at the Klemme Co-op Grain Co conference room in Klemme Iowa. Speakers include Dr Wes Buchele Iowa State University and Ernest Behn Boone. About 325 attended the Butler County Beef Producers Association banquet on April 1 to elect four new directors: Eugene Lindaman of Aplington as president, Roland Bud Harms of Allison as secretary treasurer, Everett Squires of Greene for the northwest district, and John Hansen of New Hartford for the southeast district. Carry-over directors include Harry Ott of Greene and Elvin Uhlenhopp of Aplington. Entertainment featured a Allison-Bristow High School girls sextet. Gail Danielson reported on Iowa Beef Producers Association activities. Ed Norman, president of First National Bank of Clarksville Tennessee, spoke on bank support for agriculture. Retiring directors were Russell Hummel, Earl Gibson, Marvin Bruns, and Burdette Johnson.
The Greene Community School requires a new three stall bus maintenance shop to support a fleet of 13 buses, 1 pickup, 1 panel, 2 tractors, and equipment. Plans call for a wash area with water and drainage, a lubrication and minor repair stall, and a separate overhaul stall with a full front and side work bench, plus overhead tire and parts storage. A referendum vote will determine the location.
The Cedar Falls Lutheran tournament saw Dor othy Fischer Betty Steere Gail Schafer Betty Markle and Trene Rover lead Greene women to the handicap team win with a 2809 total over several weekends. Schafer took 2nd in handicap singles with 606 and Steere placed 4th in all events with 1740.
Bruce Marsh of Greene was honored as the top new career underwriter at Farm Bureau Insurance. He led the beginners' class of 15 new underwriters for the first three months.
Greene High School finished fourth at the Warrior Relays in Rockford on Monday night, setting three new records. Allen Hogue starred in the 120 yard high hurdles and 180 yard low hurdles, while Jim Shultz broke the mile record with 4 53.4, eclipsing the former 5 09.4. Neil Burroughs and others scored points in sprint events, and St. Ansgar won the medley. Greene heads to Osage duals Thursday and a meet next Tuesday.
The Annual Butler County Further Education Day will be held Wednesday morning April 17 from 9 00 to 11 21 at the Allison Bristow School. Juniors from Butler County Janesville and Plainfield are invited to visit with representatives from forty seven higher education institutions including Iowa four year colleges area junior colleges vocational nursing beauty barber and trade schools. Parents may attend. Arrangements by Guy A Olson Guidance Coordinator with local counselors.
The Presbyterian Communicants' Class will be confirmed during the Maundy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. on April 2, 1968. The third annual Butler County Senior Honors Banquet occurred Tuesday evening at Allison-Bristow School with 178 attendees including board members and state officials. The program featured musical performances, speeches, and special award certificates to district staff and principals, honoring Greene County students and staff.
The dinner dance slated for April at the Country Club has been postponed until after the crowd opening following the remodeling project completion.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Stabenow and Evelyn spent a few days last week in the Frank Gales home in Sioux City.
Eight young people were taken into membership at the First Methodist Church by confirmation at services on Palm Sunday. Members of the confirmation class were Ann Wegand, Kenneth Weaverling, Joseph Shultz, Mary Jane Tefft, Marta Woodley, Bruce Barnes, Ruth Lantz and Gene Foster. The confirmants will participate in First Communion on Maundy Thursday evening.
Harold Holzschuh is a patient at Methodist Hospital in Rochester Minnesota. He is assigned to room 477.
The Butler County Selective Service board called for April induction for three men. Jerry D. Jacobs of Clarksville and James G. Card, now in Waterloo, along with Max B. Folkerts of Allison chose the U S Regular Army for three years and will train at Fort Bliss Texas. Darrel G. Brinkman of Allison joined the Navy and left for active duty March 27. James R. Norton of Clarksville enlisted in the Navy and reported for duty March 6. Tommy D. Anthony of Greene enlisted in the Marines and reported for duty February 29.
Easter Sunrise service will be held Sunday at the Golf Course at 6:00 a.m. Meditations will be given by youth members from the Church of the Brethren. Youths from the Methodist Church will host a breakfast at 7:00 a.m. at the Methodist Church.
