Residents recount a near disaster as the Shell Rock River threat to Iowa’s landmark bridge subsides. Community flood committees and energetic youth kept damage to 2 percent while churches and merchants aided relief with food and supplies. Mayors officials and firefighters worked double duty coordinating sandbagging and relief.
The Fun Night at Greene Community High School auditorium was postponed to Monday April 19 due to Holy Week. The program remains the same and is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Bill Schwartz, son of Mrs. Shirley Moon Schwartz of Rochester Minnesota, is named captain of the 1965 66 basketball team at John Marshall High School Rochester. He is also one of three captains of the 1965 football team. A junior, Schwartz previously attended Greene Elementary. The basketball team narrowly missed the Minnesota state tournament after losses to Faribault and Laverne, both tournament finalists.
Elmer Crosby a Greene area native died in Ridgefield Washington on March 14 at age 89. Survived by son Clarence two daughters Bernace Mitchell and Marie Belknap three brothers Alvin Lloyd Delbert and sister Dora Berry. Burial at Park Hill Cemetery Vancouver Washington.
A daughter named Jane Ellen was born to Dr. and Mrs. D. T. Drees of Lancing Michigan on March 31. The baby weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces. Mrs. Drees is former Janet Hoben daughter of Dr and Mrs J P Hoben of Greene.
Roger Juhl of Greene appeared in Mayor Rambert's Court charged with entering a highway through highway without stopping. He paid a $10.00 fine and $4.00 costs.
Eldred E Kingery RM3 stationed with USS Talla hatchie County AVB2 aboard the coast of Naples Italy after a Med tour. He will attend an eight week teletype repair school starting April 5 and take a twenty day leave before returning to his ship in June. He joined the Navy after high school in 1963 with training at San Diego California.
Vern Gard, high school principal, joined more than 4,000 educators at the 70th annual meeting of the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools held last week at the Palmer House in Chicago. Sessions focused on education changes, occupational education, instructional procedures, foreign language reforms, and global affairs.
Mr. and Mrs. Keith Dralle of Rockwell announce the birth of their daughter Shawn Marie on March 31. The infant weighed 8 pounds. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Dralle of Clarksville and Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Conway of Rockwell.
Kindergarten roundup will be held this Friday April 9 at Greene Elementary School. Children must be five by September 15 to enroll. A through M last names register 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. N through Z register 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Bring birth certificate.
Elmer McRoberts of LeRoy Minnesota died unexpectedly at his home Sunday He was born in Greene the son of Samuel and his wife He was preceded in death by his parents his first wife and a brother William Surviving are his wife two sons Claire of Rochester and Lyle of LeRoy a daughter Mrs Dons Johnson of LeRoy a brother Irvin and several grandchildren Funeral services are to be held in Rochester today at 2 p m at the Presbyterian Church with burial in a cemetery there.
Mrs. H. G. MacLeod returns home Friday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital after major surgery. Theodore Brinkman comes home Sunday from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Waverly following major surgery.
The Boy Scout Court of Honor will be held next Monday evening April 12 at 8 o'clock in the elementary auditorium. Greene Scouts and Explorers advancing through tenderfoot to life requirements will receive awards. Dick Scroggins, district Scout Executive, will attend. All Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorers, parents, families, leaders, committee members, and friends are invited.
The Butler County Education Association held its annual spring dinner meeting at Dumont on Tuesday March 30 with 120 members attending. Officers for 1985 66 were elected: Larry Waights Greene president Roger Behning Damon vice president Nel Schheng Parkersburg secretary Ruth Boheman Anvington treasurer and Guy Osn Allison delegate to Delegate Assembly. Mr Marvin Tu2 0n Hampton high school principal spoke on the Pilot Project set for next year. George Fischer Des Moines newly elected to the National Education Association Executive Board outlined major problems facing teacher groups.
Greene High School concert band solo contest Friday runs 3 30 to 9 45 pm in the band room with critic and judge Don Perrine of Iowa Falls. The event supports yearly solos for each member to boost ability with critique sheets and potential state contest advancement. Refreshments served. listeners welcome. pianists include Ren, Jewell, Brinkman, Rutz, Vortex, Stuntz and Bar Pam Dralle.
Mrs Warren Turner of Fort Dodge underwent major surgery at Lutheran hospital in Fort Dodge on Tuesday March 31. Her parents Mr and Mrs Henry Drake spent a few days with the Turner family.
State Senator Vernon H. Kyhl protests the conduct of the Dennler inquiry. He questions why Secretary Owen dismissed Dennler as a state milk sanitarian due to a political shift and accuses Democrats of discrediting Dennler. He cites expense accounts, questions Mrs Dennler, and condemns McCarthy style tactics. He notes a stalled civil rights proposal and urges fair treatment.
Residents along South First Street fled as two ice jams released from above, backing up the river and flooding homes and businesses. City crews, volunteers, and local groups mobilized quickly to sandbag and aid evacuees as water crested and then began receding, with Cedar River threats still looming in nearby towns.

Butler County and Texas County Oklahoma organize a two way summer exchange. Four older 4-H members will be chosen March 10 to travel to Oklahoma. Oklahoma 4-Hers will visit Butler County June 22. Butler County group departs Allison June 25 and returns July 3.
North Carolina Marine Private First Class Jimmy G Anthony, son of Mrs Mabel Anthony of Greene, reported for duty March 4 at the Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. He is assigned to Marine Wing Headquarters Group Two, unit of the Second Marine Aircraft Wing as an aviation electronics operator. The air station serves as headquarters for the wing, maintaining facilities and providing services and materials to support aviation units in the area.
Grassley reports a long running issue reached a resolution as the House approved a Senate bill forcing all non high school districts into Keen districts. By July 1 1966 every area must be in a high school district or be placed there by the county board of education. Previous attempts stalled by agricultural land tax credit disputes, which funded farm land taxes but never fully paid out. The 1966 action reflects urban lawmakers driving reorganization without expanding credits.
